Life: Alter As Needed

An aging writer returns home after the death of his mother. He decides to reinvest himself in something, writing, getting back into shape, anything. He looks back at life as something wasted, while looking ahead he feels he is unable to adapt.

He hasn't grown up in all the years he's been married and feels he's become a burden to a dutiful, intelligent wife who could be with any other man.

I got the idea to write this story when I started getting myself back into shape so I could play basketball again. I wrote the first chapter without any idea where I was going with the story. Just had an epiphany to write the opening chapter because of the outpouring of thoughts I had while running through the woods. Essentially, the title of the story was the original epiphany that led to a flood of thoughts.

Part of this comes in the wake of nine years of psychological therapy. Perhaps, I have moved on since writing this and don't feel the need to write characters and a plot to flesh out this story. But, there must be somewhere I can go with it.

What are some possible scenarios for Seth? Does he put himself in the hospital trying to get in shape. Does he lose it emotionally on a basketball court or at his job? Does he obsess that his wife, who is changing her life choices, making plans to leave him?

I think this story could culminate in the birth of a child which changes their life. She could fear with the pregnancy she will just have one more child to take care of without realizing it was what he needed to grow up? How do we grow up and become adults and what moment or moments could the main character have to overcome the main conflict?

I do very much welcome comments and will not make this rateable until I am ready to commit to this project.
