In the nightmare future of the 41st millennium, mankind teeters upon the brink of extinction. The galaxy spanning Imperium of Man is beset on all sides by ravening aliens, and threatened from within by malevolent creatures and heretic rebels. Joseph Vintros, once a promising soldier from humble beginnings, deserts the Imperial Guard when he uncovers a plot against him. Desperate for freedom, he joins with a rogue trader as a gun hand, traveling the stars in search for a new life. But just as his new found freedom begins to shape his fate, the Imperium of man seems reluctant to let one of their brightest sons escape their grasp.
