36.  09/24/09 Word Count 464 Pinkeye Home RemediesID #669829
Posted: 9-30-2009 @ 9:28 am EDT

Pinkeye is also known as conjunctivitis. It occurs when the tissues that surround your eyes become inflamed. It can be caused by allergies, viral infections or bacterial infections. How do you know if you have pink eye? If you feel like if you have something in your eye and can not find the source and if your eye itches, most likely you have pink eye. Other symptoms include redness in your eye and swollen eyelids. Sometimes one eye will have show these signs and these travel to you other eye. The reason this happens is pink eye is very contagious and when you touch your infected eye, the germs easily get on your skin and can be transferred anywhere. That is why when a student gets pink eye, they have to be on medication for twenty-four hours before returning back to school.

Since this condition is highly contagious, it is advisable to go to the doctor and get antibiotics. However, some people prefer not to go to the doctor or are unable to go immediately. There are many home remedies that will help relieve the symptoms of pinkeye.

Since Vitamin C is excellent in fighting infections, increasing the amount you take will help clear up your conjunctivitis. Even if you start taking more Vitamin C now, you may prevent the likelihood of getting pink eye.

Add colloidal silver to a glass of water. This has properties that attack bacteria and infections.

Put chamomile teabags in a cup of warm water. Allow it to brew for five minutes. Put these teabags over your eyes. While they will soothe the burning and itching in your eye, it will help draw the infection out.

Place a warm and damp wash cloth over your eye. Keep it in place for ten minutes. Doing this helps reduce the inflammation and also gives you eye a chance to heal from the infection.

Preventions are the best home remedy. Since both the viral and bacterial infections are very contagious, it can be passed from person to person easily. Here are some tips to help prevent from catching pinkeye or passing to another potential victim:

1. Wash hands after touching objects that may have been touched by somebody with pinkeye

2. Do not share towels or washcloths

3. Do not pass pinkeye by touching your eye then touching your uninfected eye

4. Stay home from work or school for at least 24 hours

While the symptoms of pinkeye usually disappear after doing one or more of these home treatments, if the symptoms do not go away or if the pinkeye returns, see your doctor. It can be a sign of a serious medical illness such as glaucoma. It is not worth it, if you lose your eyesight in your eye.

35.  09/23/09 Word Count 899 How to Keep Score in BowlingID #669655
Posted: 9-28-2009 @ 7:01 pm EDT

Even though most bowling alleys have a computer that does the automatic scoring for you, you really should know how to keep score yourself. Chances are you may find yourself in an older bowling alley that has not been updated with the latest technology. Even with the automatic scoring system, you should know how to do the scoring with the paper and pencil system of years ago in case you need to dispute a score. Computers are like humans; they are not perfect and can make mistakes too.

As a refresher, a game of bowling consists of ten frames where you have two chances to knock down all ten pins in a frame. In the last frame you have the chance to bowl three strikes. There are several symbols you should know where recording your score. An X means that you bowled a strike. A slash (/) is marked when you bowl a spare. A dash (-) shows that you did not knock down any pins. This is when you bowl a gutter ball or do not hit any pins. An F indicates that you had a foul, such as crossing over the foul line.

From the beginning of the game, you add the number of pins that you knock down during each frame. You mark the pins down after your first roll and after the second. You get bonus points for when you bowl a strike or a spare. For example if you bowl a strike in the first frame, you get bonus points for the pins you knock down with your next two balls. So in the second frame if you knock down five pins on the first ball and nine on the second, your score on the first frame will be nineteen. If you bowl a spare, then you get bonus points on the pins you knock down on your next ball. In the above example, if you bowled a spare instead of a strike in the first frame, then your score for the first frame will be a fifteen.

It is sometimes hard to keep accurate score as you are playing, not only that it is considered to be bad luck. If a you keep getting strikes and spares, you will have to wait for several frames before you can start adding. Unless if you are very good at the math, it is better to wait until the end of the game to add up the final score. You sometimes have to jump back and forth between frames if people keep bowling strikes and spares. Below is a sample game:

In the first frame you get a spare. You score is ten. In the second frame, on the first roll you knock down 6 pins. Your score for Frame one is 16.

In the second frame you knock down 5 pins on the first roll, and 3 on the second. You have nine points. Add this to to your score in Frame two. You have an accumulated score of 24 points.

In Frame three, you knock down eight pins. Add eight to your Frame 2 score. You have 32 points in Frame 3.

In Frame 4 you bowl a strike. You earn ten points for the strike plus the amount of pins you knock down on your next two balls. In Frame 5 you bowl a strike. On the next ball you knock down 5 pins. You have 25 points for this frame. Add this score to your Frame 3 score. Your score for Frame 4 is 57.

In Frame 5 you bowl another strike. Once again you get ten points for the strike plus the amount of balls you knock down on your next two balls. In Frame 6 you get a spare, by knocking down five balls with each turn. You have 20 points for this game. Add this score to your Frame 4 score. Your score for Frame 5 is 77.

In Frame 6, you get a spare. You get ten points plus the pins you knock down on your next ball. On your first ball
in Frame 7, you kncok down 4 pins. You have 14 pins in Frame six. Add this score to your Frame 5 score. Your score for Frame 6 is 91.

In Frame 7, you knock down nine pines. Add this score to your Frame 6 score. Your score for Frame 7 is 100.

In Frame 8, you knock down 9 pins. Add this score to your Frame 7 score. Your score for Frame 8 is 109.

In Frame 9 you get a spare. On your first ball in Frame 10, you knock down 9 pins. You get nineteen points for this frame. Add this score to your Frame 8 score. Your score for Frame 9 is 128.

In Frame 10, you get a spare. Since you get an extra ball on this frame, you get a strike. You get 20 points for this frame. Add this score to your Frame 9 score. Your score for Frame 10, and the game, is 148.

Who knows if you will ever need to keep score in bowling. However, it is a handy thing to know how to do. Some day you might be on a quiz show such as “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and one of the questions may have to do with keeping score while bowling.

34.  09/22/09 Word Count 459 Home Remedies Bladder InfectionsID #669653
Posted: 9-28-2009 @ 6:31 pm EDT

Bladder infections, also urinary tract infections are a very common ailment in both men and women. They are caused by bacteria growing in your bladder and are more common in females than males. The symptoms can range from mild discomfort to felling sick to the stomach. These are signs to look for to indicate that you are getting an infection:

1. A burning sensation when you urinate

2. Urinating often

3. Pressure while urinating

4. The feeling that you need to urinate again

5. Inability to urinate

6. Blood in urine

7. Lower back pains

Doctors prescribe antibiotics to treat bladder infection. However, since we have good bacteria in our body as well as the bad, antibiotics will attack the good when it is taking care of the bad. If you have repeat bladder infections, eventually the body is going to become resistant to the antibiotics. It may be a good idea to try the following home remedies to get rid of your bladder infection:

1. Stop drinking carbonated beverages once you see the sings. Instead drink eight glasses of water a day. When you drink more water, you have a better chance of flushing the toxins out of your body.

2. Drinking cranberry juice prevents bacteria from sticking to the walls of your bladder. However, make sure that you drink 100% pure juice. If you drink juice that has added sugar, it may make your infection worse. If you do not like the taste of straight cranberry juice, get one that has another juice mixed in, such as cranapple.

3. Purchase cranberry capsules from the health food store. They contain d-mannose which is the main property in cranberries.

4. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water. Drink three times a day.

To prevent bladder infections from occurring:

1. If you have to urinate. Do so. Do not keep holding it in until you are about to burst.

2. Keep your genital area clean. Make sure when you use soap to make sure the area is completely rinsed off.

3. Wear cotton underwear. Your underwear needs to breath. When you have manmade fabrics they tend to get wet and moist and allow bacteria to grow.

4. Wear looser pants. If your jeans are too tight, they can push bacteria into the urethra.

5. If you are a female, wipe from front to back after you urinate.

6. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugary drinks

7. Eat natural yogurt. This has the good bacteria which can fight the bad.

When you follow these simple remedies, you bladder infection will disappear in no time at all. However, see your doctor if the symptoms do not go away. They can be a sign of a kidney infection.

Backaches mostly occur in the middle or lower spine. Sometimes the pains may be in the hips. Sometimes the pain is so bad, the victim may not be able to move or function. The major causes of backaches include:

1. Overusing the back muscles

2. Improper lifting

3. Poor posture

4. Poor nutrition

5. Lack of exercise

Back pain is one of the most common health problems. Everybody can get this; nobody is excluded. Men, women, adults, teenagers and even children can fall victim to getting a back pain. While pharmacies sell a wide variety of creams to put on your back, in most cases you will need somebody to help you put it on your aching back. What are you to do if you are alone? Should you use hot or cold treatments?

If you are alone and want to relieve your back pain, add a cup of sea salt to a tub of warm water. Bathe for twenty minutes.

Place an ice pack on the sore spots on your back. This is very effective if you have an inflammation in your muscles.

Garlic oil is very effective. Most drug and health food stores sell this in a soft gel form. Take one to two each day. This helps protect your back from pains and help relieve back pains when you do get them. You can also rub garlic oil directly onto your sore spots.

Mix lemon juice and table salt. Rub this mixture onto your sore back. This helps sooth your sore back.

Take 2000 milligrams of vitamin C a day. Even with the most severe pain, "considerable improvement will be noticeable within two days" (back ache threatment)

Include more vegetables in your diet. Eat more vegetables like carrots, cucumbers and lettuce. Include milk and fruit with your breakfast. Avoid food that is high in fat and those that are fried.

If you are a smoker, think about quitting. This is a hard habit to break. However, tobacco products have a direct impact on backaches. You back will thank you for it if you do successfully quit smoking.

Practice yoga and meditation exercises daily to reduce your back pains. These are effective and since stress is also another cause of backaches, these exercises help you to clear your mind and relax.

Hopefully, these remedies help you get rid of your back pains. These are just a few suggestions. There are many different ways you can treat your back without having to go to the doctor. However, if your backaches do not go away or if they keep coming back, make an appointment to see your doctor. Chronic backaches may be a sign of another illness such as kidney disease.

32.  09/20/09 Word Count 447 Soft Drinks and ObesityID #669651
Posted: 9-28-2009 @ 6:14 pm EDT

Obesity is on the rise in the United States. The problem is prevalent among children, teenagers and adults. Soft drinks are being blamed for contributing to this crisis.

Children tend to drink more sweetened beverages today than a decade ago. When they consume these sugary beverages, they also tend to take in more calories each day. It is believed that the insulin rises when somebody drinks a soda or another sweetened soft drink. This, in turn, makes him hungrier. As a result, he eats more.
Sodas tend to go hand-in-hand with fast food. When somebody orders a fatty cheeseburger, greasy fries, more likely than not, he will also have a soda to go with his meal. Since many families have parents who both work, a fast food restaurant is a convenient option for meals. This is one of the reasons why obesity is the highest among teenagers. While in this case fast foods are the main cause of obesity, soft drinks get the blame also.

The amount of soft drinks an individual consumes has a link to his weight. But individuals mistakenly believe that just by switching to a diet soda, their weight problems would be over. However, it is just the opposite. Artificial sweeteners also tend to be related to weight gain. "Rats who were fed saccharin-sweetened yogurt ... consumed more calories, gained more weight and more body fat, and did not compensate by cutting back" (Wikipedia.org).

While the consumption of sugary soft drinks tends to lead to obesity, it does not mean that you have to totally eliminate them from you diet. Since consuming too much soda leads to weight gain, set a limit on how much to drink each day. For example, if you drink two twenty ounce bottles a day, cut back to one. As already stated, reducing the amount of soda you consume helps reduce your body mass index. Even if you are a working parent, avoid fast food restaurants; only go to one once a month. There are many simple and healthy recipes in this world. All that needs to be done is to prepare them ahead of time and keep in the freezer. On a day that you are too busy to prepare a meal, take one of the meals from the freezer and cook it in the microwave. Finally, just because you drink diet soft drinks, it does not mean that you will lose weight. If you are looking to lose weight, drinking diet soda is an excellent idea. However, you must reduce the amount of calories you consume each day. A diet soda does not cancel out the calories of that piece of cake that you just ate.

31.  09/19/09 Word Count 540 History of Soft DrinksID #669649
Posted: 9-28-2009 @ 6:03 pm EDT

People often confuse soft drinks as just sodas. However, any beverage that does not have alcohol or dairy products is considered to be a soft drink. They include bottled waters, iced tea, fruit punch and soda.

The history of soft drinks can be traced back to ancient times. "Ancient societies believed that bathing in natural springs and drinking mineral waters could cure many diseases" (Wikipedia.org)

The sherbet is most likely the earliest soft drink. Developed in the Near East during the medieval times, these juices were made of crushed herbs, fruits and flowers. These sherbets are totally different from the frozen ones we enjoy today.

The first naturally carbonated drink appeared around 1265 in England. Dandelion and Burdock was very popular during that time.

Non-carbonated soft drinks were first marketed in the West during the 17th century. The drinks were made of honey, lemon and water. Marketer carried barrels of this drink on their backs and sold them to the people in towns.

In the 18th century carbonated drinks were introduced to the world. Wanting to replicate naturally carbonated water "Joseph Priestly discovered a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide to make carbonated water" (Wikipedia.org). With its pleasant taste, carbonated water became very popular. Later on in the century, flavors were introduced to the water.

In the early 1800s, soda water was popular in the United States. Using a Nooth apparatus, Benjamin Silliman sold soda by dispensing them in cups and glasses. This was the birth of the soda fountain. Since this was a major success, large factories were producing soda fountains be the 1830s.

Since mineral water was and still is a healthy beverage, Pharmacists set about to improve the taste. They added herbs and used "birch bark, dandelion, sarsaparilla, fruit extracts and other substances" (Wikipedia.org).

Soda fountains began emerging in many drug stores. People would go to one on a daily basis.

While soft drinks were on the rise during the 19th century, the sales of bottled beverages took up only a small part of the market. This was because of the majority of the consumers going to soda bars. It was not until the early 1900s when the sales of bottled drinks rose dramatically. In the second half of the century, canned drinks took up a large part of the market.

The Crown Cork Bottle Seal was invented in 1892. Wanting to keep the carbonation in the bottle, to keep the drink from going flat, many patents were tried. This "was the first very successful method of keeping the bubbles in the bottle." (Wikipedia.org).

In 1899, a glass blowing machine was used for the first time to make glass bottles. Prior to this, the bottles were hand blown. This new innovation increased the production of bottles from 1,400 to 58,000 a day.

The first vending machines began appearing in the 1920s. At the same time, sodas were sold in take home packs. Just like when you go today to buy a six pack of soda, you have the convenient plastic ring to carry them. However, the carriers were made of cardboard.

Today the soft drink industry is steadily growing. With plastic bottles and new flavors being added each day, it is expected to continue its market growth.

30.  09/18/09 Word Count 629 Bowling and TechnologyID #669514
Posted: 9-27-2009 @ 5:29 pm EDT

What gives businesses the competitive advantage over other companies that offer similar products? The answer to this question is innovation of technology. With advances in technology, the company can offer new products to the ever demanding consumer and stay ahead of the competitive markets. This is also true in the sports world. Innovation in technology is the main reason why more people are interested in bowling. Not only is bowling fun, individual's performance has been improving because of the technological advances.
Technology has changed bowling since the day it was born. Ever since a crude bowling ball and pins were found in an Egyptian child's grave in 3200 B. C., technological changes have been made to improve the sport of bowling.
When bowling was introduced to the United States during the Colonial era, it was called Bowl on the Green. Bowling was originally played outside on grass. Did you ever try to bowl in your back yard and try to get a strike? While this was possible, strikes were almost nonexistent. It was not until 1840 when Knickerbockers, the first indoor bowling alley was built. This advance in technology was in possible for the many people today to bowl a perfect game of 300.
The original bowling balls were mostly made of oak and lignum vitae, a very hard wood (unless if you consider the cannonball that King Henry VIII used when he played as a bowling ball). This was the norm before the 20th Century.
!n 1905, the Evertrue, the first hard rubber ball was manufactured. In 1914, Brunswick Company started making the Mineralite balls. This new material replaced the wooden ones and was the same for over sixty years.
In the 1970s, manufacturers developed hard plastic balls. By softening the balls with solvents, the ball had a softer cover and bowlers were able to get higher scores. However, some balls gave people the edge and the USBC set balance regulations for balls.
In the 1980s Ebonite introduced polyurethane balls. This advance in technology helps bowlers get a better spin on the ball. Since the company did not think people would pay the high price for this ball, they sold the rights to the American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF). This new ball was in high demand and people were willing to pay more for it. The polyurethane ball is said to be the turning point in individual performance.
With technology, bowlers no longer have to wait on the pin boys to re set the pins. The semi-automatic pin spotter was invented in 1936. Then in 1946, this was replaced by the fully automatic pin spotter. Not only does this technology make it quicker for the pins to get set up, it makes it safer for the lane attendants.
With the birth of television in the 1950s, National Broadcasting Company (NBC) had the first coverage of Championship Bowling. Bowling became popular overnight because of shows such as Bowling for Dollars and Celebrity Bowling. If technology had not brought about the television set, bowling would not be as popular as it is today.
No longer do people need to learn how to keep score. While some people have no problem making tabulations for each frame, some people do not know how to accurately keep score, since you get bonus points for spares and strikes. Most bowling alleys have computers that do the scoring for you. You know can concentrate on improving your score and not if you had done your math right.
Technology is constantly changing. These changes are for the better. In bowling people are improving their performance and more are getting interested in the sport. If it was not for the technological advances throughout bowling's history, this sport would not be as popular as it is today.

29.  09/16-17/09 Word count 1000+ Improve Bowling Ball SpinID #669511
Posted: 9-27-2009 @ 5:25 pm EDT

Oh! The frustration you feel when you think you have a well-placed ball and, at the last second, it curves and ends up in the gutter or knocks down one or two pins. Nothing works, not even when you try the ever so popular bowl kinetics by rotating your body to steer the ball. It is like driving down the highway and you duck when you notice a bird flying towards your windshield. The bird will still hit if it so desires. The only way you are going to make sure that your ball goes where you want it to go is to learn how to get a spin on your ball. Believe me; you do not have to be a professional bowler to do this. By following the tips provided, even a novice can get the desired spin.
The first thing you have to know is what type of bowling ball you are using. Not all bowling balls are created equal. For example, if you have a plastic ball, it normally goes in a straight line. It is difficult to get a good spin on this type of ball. However, if have a urethane ball, which was developed in the 1970s, or a reactive resin ball, which was developed in the 1990s, you can get more of a hook on your ball.
Since the thumbs and finger holes in House bowling balls vary greatly, you have to find one that fits your hand. The holes are normally wider in the larger balls and smaller in the lighter ones. If you have large or small hands, you may find it hard to find a ball in your ideal w. Therefore, you have to check the conventional grip of different bowling balls to find one that suits your hand.
Cradle a ball in your non-throwing arm. Try to put your thumb, index and middle fingers into the finger holes. If the finger holes are too tight, try this with another ball with the same weight. Keep trying the balls until you find one where you can easily slide you fingers in and allows your thumb to come out easily. When you are testing the finger holes, your palm should be in full contact with the ball
When you roll the ball down the alley, the fingers should slide out easily. If they stick, you will not get a good spin. Therefore, you should pick more than one ball before you start your game.
You may also consider purchasing your own bowling ball. Sometimes you may not be able to find the perfect ball at the bowling alley. Once you know your desired weight, color and brand of bowling ball, go to a sporting goods store. These bowling balls are costumed made for your hand because your fingers get measured and the holes are drilled after you decide which ball to get.
You may not believe this, but the type of shoes you wear has an impact on your spin. You have to have a pair that allows you to slide and brake as you deliver your ball. Rental shoes are just for beginners. You really should consider purchasing your own pair. Not only will you improve your spin, but you will not be paying those rental fees.
In the past, outside of bowling alleys, it was difficult to buy bowling shoes. However, since bowling is more popular than ever different stores, such as sports clothing, accessory and shoe stores, have added bowling shoes to their product line.
There are two styles of bowling shoes. They are the athletic and performance shoes.
The athletic shoe looks and feels like a regular athletic shoe. However, it is made for bowling. The have a sliding sole on both shoes. This type of shoe is excellent for beginner and occasional bowlers.
The performance bowling shoe is ideal for those who want to improve their bowling score. The soles are different in a pair of these shoes. One shoe is used for sliding while the other is used for braking. Since the sliding shoe is worn on the foot that is opposite of the throwing hand, there are left handed bowling shoes and right handed ones.
Whether you are buying a pair of athletic or performance bowling shoes, make sure you get the right width. For example, if you have a wide foot, purchase a shoe that has a wide width. Do not get a shoe that is too light or too loose. They must have a snug fit. A wrongly fitted shoe can throw you off balance and hurt your performance.
Now that you have your bowling ball and shoes, it is time to get a spin on your ball. Before you test out your spin for the first time, walk up to the foul line, make sure nobody is bowling in the lanes next to you. There are ten dots six feet away from the foul line and seven arrows fifteen feet away. These are what you focus on when you roll your ball, not the head pin.
If you are bowling right handed, focus of the second arrow on the right side of the lane. If you are left handed, focus on the arrow on the left side on the lane. Now that you know which arrows to aim for, get into your starting position. Standing with both feet together, position your shoulder and ball over the target arrow. Keeping your feet perpendicular to your shoulders, walk towards the target arrow. Swing the ball back behind you and lean slightly forward. When you get to the foul line, swing your ball forward and keep your palm up. As you release the ball, make sure your thumb comes out of the finder hole first. The index finger and middle fingers then should slide out at the same time.
By following these simple instructions, you will be getting the spin on your ball in no time at all. The basic things to remember is knowing what type of ball your are using, if your ball is fitted for your hand and that you have the right type of bowling shoes. The main thing is to keep your palm facing up when your release your ball. Do not give up if your ball does not spin the way you want. All it takes is a little practice.

28.  09/15/09 Word Count 524 How to Pick a Bowling BallID #669509
Posted: 9-27-2009 @ 5:22 pm EDT

Not all bowling balls are created equally. Whether you are a person who only bowls once a year or one who competes in leagues, you must have the right type of bowling ball. Just having one that is in your favorite color is not the best reason to use that ball. The most important feature you should look for when you are using the alley's balls or are purchasing one is the hand grip.
You first have to look at the weight of the bowling ball. If you use a ball that is too heavy, you can injure your shoulder and wrist. While men have a tendency to pick the heaviest balls to show off their masculinity, females tend to pick a ball that is too light. This affects the amount of force needed to get a strike. If you a woman you should use a ball that weights between ten and fourteen pounds; if you are a man the ball should weight between fourteen and up to sixteen pounds. An Adult should not use a ball that weighs less than ten pounds unless he has a weak back. Children should use a ball that they can easily swing without putting a strain on their muscles. A ball that weighs less than ten pounds would be ideal for the beginner child. The weight of the balls is normally engraved on the surface of the bowling ball.
The thumbs and finger holes in bowling balls vary greatly. The holes are normally wider in the larger balls and smaller in the lighter ones. Some people may find it hard to find a ball in their ideal weight if they have larger or smaller hands.
When you are testing the finger holes, your palm should be in full contact with the ball.
The final test is when you roll the ball down the alley. The fingers should slide out easily. If they stick, your roll will not be effective. Therefore, you should pick more than one ball before you start your game.
You may also consider purchasing your own bowling ball. Sometimes you may not be able to find the perfect ball at the bowling alley. Once you know your desired weight, color and brand of bowling ball, go to a sporting goods store. These bowling balls are custom made for your hand because your fingers get measured and the holes are drilled after you decide which ball to get.
You know how to find the ball that gives you the best grip. Not only will you come home with an improved bowling performance, your body will thank you for it. With the right bowling ball you are preventing wrist and shoulder injuries. Have fun hitting the lanes.

27.  09/14/09 Word Count 801 Rules of Candlepin BowlingID #669508
Posted: 9-27-2009 @ 5:19 pm EDT

The moment you walk into the candlepin bowling alley, you take a deep breath and look around. It smells and looks the same as a ten pin alley. You hear the familiar sounds of balls rolling down the lanes and hitting the pins. Once in a while you may hear a sound that you hope will not happen to you, the soft thump as the ball goes into the gutter. This looks like the place that you normally bowl at back home. However, you get a closer look and, even though the lanes are the same size, the game is different. You can hold the ball in the palm of your hand and the pins look more tapered, like candles. You realize that this is a different game that you are going to be playing; you better understand the rules before you begin.
The first thing you must realize is that you are not playing a game of bowling. You are playing a string of candlepins. Each sting consists of ten boxes, not frames. You also have three attempts to knock down ten pins per box.
Before you make your first roll, let's refresh on the general bowling rules. This is basically etiquette at all bowling alleys, so you are probably already familiar with it. Always show good sportsmanship, even if the string is not going your way. Always give the bowler on your right to bowl first. If you happen to bowl in the wrong lane or out of position, finish your box, the pins will be counted on your score. Then move to the correct lane or position. If it is not your turn to bowl, you must be seated. If there are any mechanical problems, do not fix it yourself; get a lane attendant.
Before you start your string, you have to consider are the ball rules. First, the ball must be fairly delivered. Do not think, because of the weight of the ball, that you can just throw the balls at the pins. This game is not like the carnival game where you try to knock down as many bottles as you can. This is bowling and you still have to roll the ball. You can lob it if you want. However, if you do this, the ball has to touch the surface of the lane before the lob line. If you throw the ball and it touches the lane after the lob line, it is a foul. Any pins you knock over will not count. It is better to roll the ball than lob it. Not only will you have more control of the ball, you also protect the surface of the lane from damage.
The ball also must have fair contact. This means that it must strike a standing pin or gutter before hitting any pins or wood, this will be considered a foul. Even if the ball bounces back into the lane and knocks down any pins, these pins will not count in the score. If a ball makes fair contact and them rebounds from objects on the lane, the downed pins will count. For example, if a ball hits the pins, then goes in the gutter lane and then rebounds out, this ball is still playable.

Any pins that are knocked down and are no longer moving, is called wood. The ones that are behind the deadwood line are live and playable. The ones in front of this line are dead and will be removed. Wood that sticks up out of the pit area is dead. Wood that is in the gutter, but also touching the lane is playable if the ball makes fair contact while it is still touching the lane. If your balls his playable wood and deadwood at the same time, the pins you knock down will count.
Why would anybody want to get a deliberate foul? However, there are some who do. First of all, any pins he knocks down in a box will not count. For example, if you drop your ball on the approach you will be charged with a deliberate foul because you are abusing the equipment. This also applies if you deliberately roll you ball into the gutter two consecutive times. Not only do you hurt your candlepin score by getting these fouls; you also will be disqualified from the game. Just remember, you are bowling to have fun, meet new people and make friends.
Even though some of the rules of candlepin bowling are similat to those of ten pin bowling, some of not. By being familiar with them, you understand the game better. You will find it as enjoyable as ten pins. Now you know a bit of the rules and etiquette of candlepin bowling, find an alley and have a fun time.

26.  09/13/09 Word Count 753 Improving Your Candlepin GameID #669506
Posted: 9-27-2009 @ 5:15 pm EDT

With smaller balls and narrower pins, candlepin bowling is different than playing ten pins. It is harder, because of the narrower shape of the candlepins, to get a strike. Even though, just like the ten pin game, the top score bowlers get in this game is 300 , it is nearly impossible to get a perfect game. In fact the highest undisputed score in sanctioned play is 245. This does not mean that candlepins is harder to play than tenpins. You are just rolling a ball that is smaller that is smaller. It is difficult to knock all the balls over because these pins do not create the chain reaction as in ten pins when you have a well placed ball. As with tenpins, you have to work on improving your performance. The following tips will help you bowling at your top performance.
The best tip to improving your game is to buy your own equipment. While the lanes have shoes and balls, you will improve your score drastically when you have equipment that fits your body. Check out different types of athletic and bowling shoes. Make sure they have a snug fit and are not too loose or tight. Not all bowling balls are the same. Find one that is designed for you hand. Check out different types of balls before you buy one.
Warm up before you start bowling. By stretching and flexing your muscles, you are not only protecting yourself from getting injured, you are giving yourself a chance to get a higher score.
While in tenpin your focus on the aiming line, in candlepins focus on the pins. It is much easier to roll a ball in a straight line over the even surface. The ball will follow where your eyes are focusing. Use imagery to see a good roll. When you put a positive image in your mind, this increases the chance of it happening.
Find your starting position by standing in the approach lane with your back to the pins. Your heels should be two to three inches from the foul line. Take three regular steps away from the foul line and turn around. This is your starting spot, where you begin your approach.
Do not finish your approach on the foul line. You should release your ball two to four inches from it. This is to allow for error in case you put too much exaggeration in your slide.
When you are ready to throw that ball, stand with your feet together. A little more weight should be on the leg that is the same side as the throwing arm. This gives you better balance as you walk down the approach lane and roll your ball.
Hold the ball in your hand with your fingers spread evenly around the ball. Have the thumb up. This gives the best control over the ball as you roll it.
Use the three step approach when you deliver the ball. If you are a right-handed bowler, you step with you left foot. Push the ball forward and a little to the left. Then you step with the right foot, allowing the ball to swing on the right into the back swing. Then you step again with the left foot, rolling the ball down the lane.
Follow through with you arm as you release the ball. Do not stop your movement when you release the ball. Allow the arm to continue to swing upwards, past the point of release. This helps improve your accuracy.
Keep your eyes on the pins during your delivery. If you let your eyes wander when you do the approach, you throw will be off.
Concentrate on your game. Do not let things outside of the approach lane distract you. Do not take too much time on the approach lane. If you wait too long, your concentration may dwindle.
Use discipline when you bowl. When a technique is working, stick with it, do not change it. When you make changes, you can throw your game off. Only make changes under the advice of a more experienced bowler.
These are a few tips that will help you improve your candlepin bowling performance. Be prepared when you roll that first ball. By knowing the correct position of your approach, how you distribute the weight on your legs, the correct position of your feet during the approach, holding the ball properly in your hands and concentrating on your roll, you will be bowling an excellent candlepin in no time at all.

25.  09/12/09 Word Count 919 Teaching Children How to BowlID #669384
Posted: 9-26-2009 @ 7:18 pm EDT

Bowling is a fun sport played by people of all ages, gender, and abilities. Even over seven hundred years ago evidence of this game was discovered in an Egyptian boy's coffin. This shows that bowling was popular among children since the sport was born. Bowling is the only sport that is considered to be a family activity. When they are old enough to understand the rules and safety of the game and hold a bowling ball, your children can be hitting the lanes with you. When your child enters the bowling alley for the first time, he will excited and enthused with the sights, sounds and smells that come with a bowling alley. It is a sport where children can understand the rules of the game easily. With some teaching, you child can become good at the sport in a short period of time. The main key to teaching this sport is to make sure that your child has fun while he is learning. By using these tips, you child may be getting a better score than you in no time at all.
Before even picking up a bowling ball, it is important to teach your child about proper bowling etiquette. Just like at the dinner table, they have to know they have to use proper manners at the bowling alley. How frustrating, annoying and distracting it can be, if a child starts screaming because he placed his ball directly into the gutter. By understanding that he has to behave while he is playing, he is creating a pleasant and safe environment for bowlers around him.
The child should wait for the bowler on his right to bowl, if both are bowling at the same time. Since the child is a beginner bowler, he can even offer to let the other person bowl first. He also should sit down and wait for his turn to bowl and be ready when his turn comes up. Make sure you child is wearing socks. This way he will not get blisters on his foot or pass foot infections to the next person. Your child must not use bad language. This is even inappropriate for adults. Also, keep food out of the bowling area. When there are crumbs and spilled drinks on the approach lane, your child can slip, fall and get hurt.
Now that your child understands a little about the etiquette of bowling, you are ready to let him hit the lanes. You first must make sure that he is wearing comfortable and loose fitting clothes. The bowling shoes should be snug. If either the cloths or the shoes are too tight, your child's movements and performance might be hampered. Loose fitting clothes allow your child to have a full range of motion and flexibility.
You have to have a ball that is suitable to the size and strength of your child. You do not want you child starting out with one of the heaviest bowling balls in the alley. Compare several different balls to see which one feels the best to your child. Have him practice the swinging motion with the different balls and get the ones that are easiest to grip and release. You do not want a ball that has finger holes that are too tight or too loose.
Do not take you child to the bowling alley during peak hours. If there is too much noise or activity, your child can be distracted. It also can be frustrating when you have arrived at the bowling alley and all the lanes are occupied. You will have to wait until a lane is open. Your child's learning can be hampered because once you finally get on a lane, the games may be rushed.
Show your child the correct way in holding, gripping, swinging and releasing the ball. If you are an occasional bowler yourself, do not be afraid to ask for help. There are many bowlers who are willing to show your child some techniques.
Teach your child to use the aiming arrows in the center of the lane. Remember, that it is almost impossible to roll your ball straight in a ten pin lane. His aim will be better by using the arrows.
Start slow at first. Once he has mastered the correct bowling forms and set well-placed balls, then he can try to increase his speed. He has a better chance of knocking down more pins when he rolls a faster ball.
As your child practices and improves his bowling, have him start using the four step approach. Let's assume that he is a right handed bowler. He stands with both feet together, holding the ball with both hands. He steps forward with his left foot, pushing the ball forward and a little to the left. Then he steps with the right foot, allowing the ball to swing on the right into the back swing. Then he steps again with the left foot, with this step the ball is at the arc of the back swing. The final step is with his right foot and he rolls and releases the ball.
Have your child use the conventional grip on the bowling ball. With this grip his fingers go in to the knuckles and the thumb goes all the way in. The type of grip works best for beginner bowlers.
Bowling has been around for centuries. People of all ages can enjoy this sport. If you are looking for a sport to play with you child, try bowling.

Who knew there are so many variations of bowling? With ten pins, candlepins there is also duckpins. Did you know that, besides for baseball, this was Babe Ruth's favorite sport? The pins are shorter and lighter than ten pins. However, they are wider than candlepins. Commonly played in most of the New England states, duckpins is similar to candlepins. For example, the bowler has three attempts in a frame to knock down all ten pins. The ball, like the one in candlepins has no finger holes.
The biggest debate in the duckpin bowling world is when did this sport originate? Some say it started in 1900 when two baseball players owned bowling alleys in Maryland and Massachusetts. Others state this sport originated earlier than that.
Since ten pin bowling was mostly a winter sport, most bowling alleys closed during the summer months. A few alleys remained open in Maryland where people could practice with small balls. The pins were trimmed down to match the ball's size.
Two baseball players, John McGraw and Wilber Robinson participated in this sport. They were both avid duck hunters. To them, the falling pins resembled a flock of flying ducks. They went on to open two duckpin bowling alleys in Maryland and Massachusetts. However, these bowling allies were only traced back to the late 1930's. According to "Duckpins: The Tenth Frame" this sport existed in 1894. There were several articles describing duckpin tournaments at that time. What it looks like McGraw and Robinson did was add a name to a sport that already existed.
During the Roaring Twenties, duckpin bowling became popular. Not only were people playing this sport during the summer months, they were also playing in the winter. Leagues were starting to spring up from New England to Georgia and Washington D. C.
The National Duckpin Congress was established in 1927. The rules, bowling balls, pins and lanes were standardized. For example, the bowling balls must weigh three pounds twelve ounces or less.
In 1967 duckpin bowling reached a peak of 300,000 bowlers. Then it went into a decline. However, it is still a popular sport in Baltimore, Washington D. C., Connecticut and Rhode Island.
In 1982, the Women's National Duckpin Association was established. This gives women a chance to compete in this sport at a professional level. With several tournaments in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, the best bowlers get a chance to make it to the final tournament of the year. This is the Grand Prix of Duckpin bowling.
With the steady decline of duckpin bowling, there is the question of why people are losing interest. Maybe there is too much competition with ten pin bowling. If there is not a turn around, this sport may slip out of existence with the next decade.

22.  09/09/09 Word Count 540 Buying Bowling ShoesID #669380

Did you ever try bowling in sneakers, knee high boots or high heel shoes? Forget about it, this will never happen. Not only is this unsafe where you can slip, fall or strain a muscle, the bowling alley attendants will not allow this. Besides from being unsafe, unauthorized shoes will markup and mar the approach lanes. If you attempt to wear anything other than bowling shoes, you will most likely be evicted from the bowling alley. The reason why bowling shoes are the only approved shoe is they protect the specially waxed floors. The bowling shoe is the most important factor to bowl a good game.
Bowling alleys offer shoes that people can rent for a few dollars. The chance that the center has your size is very likely. These are ideal for the occasional bowler who may hit the lanes a few times a year. However, since these shoes have a universal sole, they are useful to beginner bowlers. If you are interested in improving your game, these soles, whether they are too slick or have too much traction for your taste, may actually hinder your performance. Since these are community shoes, anybody can rent them. Just imagine renting a pair of shoes and catching athlete's foot. Yuck!
While it is unlikely that you catch some type of foot fungus, you may want to consider buying a pair of bowling shoes. Even if you bowl a few times a year, the money you save from not paying the rental adds up.
You have to decide if you are going to rent bowling shoes or make an investment by purchasing your own pair. You are not done making decisions. You then have to decide if you are going to buy an athletic bowling shoe or a performance pair. After you check the grip, tread and comfort, there is only one more thing to look for: your favorite color and style.

21.  09/08/09 Word Count 524 Bowling SafetyID #669379

The excitement of rolling the ball down the bowling lane and the thrill of all ten pins falling at the first half of the frame, that is what is on your mind as you walk through the door of the bowling alley. Safety is far from your mind. Only people who play sports such as hockey and football get injured. Yet, little do you realize, you can get hurt anywhere in the bowling alley whether you are just entering the center or when you actually start bowling.
The most important safety rule is to be aware of your surroundings. Many people are swinging a ball that can weigh up to sixteen pounds. While you do not want to get hit with one of these, you also do not want to hit somebody else. That can hurt!
When you are on the approach, make sure no one else is in front of you. Some people are more intent on watching where their ball is going and may get in your way. Never bowl at the same time when somebody is bowling next to you. Wait until he is done.
Use safety when you pick up your bowling ball. Never pick up a ball with one hand. This puts a strain on your fingers, wrist and arm and can cause strains to them. Pick up a bowling ball with two hands and cradle it in your non-throwing arm. When you are getting your ball from the return rack, make sure that no other balls are coming. This is a good way to get a broken finger if you are not paying attention. Do not use a ball that is too heavy. Not only can you strain a muscle, you can also drop it onto your foot. Always wear approved bowling shoes. If you wear sneakers, not only will you mark up the lane approaches, you may slip, fall or strain a muscle. Keep the bottom of your bowling shoes clean and dry. Since you need to slide when you release your ball, a dirty shoe can cause you to slide inappropriately and fall. If you cross the foul line, clean the bottoms of your shoes before you bowl again. The bowling lane is heavily oiled.
Never try to fix something yourself. That is why bowling allies have lane attendants. For example, if a bowling pin did not get cleared away by a pin setter, do not walk down the lane to clear it away. That is what the attendant's job is, to fix problems they have been trained to handle.
While some think of bowling as a recreational activity, it is still a sport. It is also an excellent form of exercise. As with any sport, you have to take good care of your body. By stretching and warming up your muscles will reduce the chance that you will strain them when you are bowling.
All it takes is some common sense in the bowling alley. While it is easy to get hurt while bowling, when you are aware of your surroundings, wear the right equipment and warm up before you bowl, you protect yourself and others.

20.  09/07/09 Word Count 500 History of Bowling in the U.S.ID #669217
Posted: 9-25-2009 @ 11:52 am EDT

It is believed that bowling dates back to 3200 B.C. After anthropologists discovered a grave of an Egyptian boy, they found primitive bowling balls and pins in it. Some argue that bowling originated in Germany in 300 AD. In 1366 King Edward III banned his English military troops from playing the game. He said that the sport distracted them from their duties. King Henry VIII used cannon balls to bowl with. In Germany and other parts of Europe, the people rolled the ball at ninepins. As it can be seen, bowling did not originate in the United States. People have been practicing this pastime many years before Americans came to the New World.
Bowling was introduced to the United States during the Colonial period. Called Bowl on the Green, nine pin bowling was very popular. However, due to problems with gambling and organized crime, nine pin bowling was banned in 1841. Did this ban deter the Americans? No! When they got the notice about the prohibition, they found a loophole. By adding an extra pin, they were not breaking the law. No longer playing nine pin bowling, they invented a new sport called ten pin bowling.
Bowling was originally played outdoors. Built in 1840, Knickerbockers was the first indoor bowling alley.
Bowling became more popular when the Brunswick Company added bowling equipment to their product line. In 1914 this company made improvements to their products. Instead of making wooden balls, they supplied hard rubber balls.
The American Bowling Congress was started in 1895. Where bowling allies were mostly frequented by men, this organization helped get more female bowlers. This group created the standard rules which still exist today.
The golden age of bowling was from 1840 to 1960. Because more and more people became interested in the sport, bowling became popular. It was a billion dollar industry in the United States.
There were increases in bowling technology during this period. The semi-automatic pin spotter was invented in 1936. Then in 1946, this was replaced by the fully automatic pin spotter.
Since the 1950s was also the television age, the popularity of bowling was exposed to more Americans. As they purchased their first television sets, Americans viewed commercials advertising bowling. Also, with televised bowling competitions, the popularity of ten pin bowling continued to grow.
League bowling became popular during the 1960s and early 1970s. Don Carter and Dick Weber, two professional bowlers, were popular role models.
The second golden age of bowling began during the late 1980s. With computers and automatic scoring systems, the people concentrated on what they loved about the sport-rolling the ball down the lane and hitting pins. While at the beginning of the 1980s, there was a decline of interest in bowling, new technology is responsible for the new found interest.
Bowling is one of the most popular sports not only in the United States but in the world. In 90 countries there are over 100 million bowlers. The United States Bowling Congress has over two million members.

Bowling leagues are springing up left and right. From the largest metropolitan city to the smallest rural community, bowling leagues are popular for people of all ages. Children, teenagers, adults and even seniors are involved in league play.
In general, people form teams of four to six people; the teams make up a league that compete with each other over a specified period of time. The courses of times these leagues run vary. Some leagues may run twenty-eight to thirty-six weeks. There are summer leagues that run ten to fifteen weeks. There are even leagues that run one to two weeks. These are ideal for full-time workers who want to bowl when they are on vacation. Because of their work schedule, they may not be able to commit to a longer bowling season.
In league play, two teams bowl against each other. They normally bowl three games in the competition. At the end of each game, the scores of all the teammates are added up. Sometimes there is a team handicap, which is figured in as well.
Points are awarded for each team win. Points are also given for the total pin count for the three games. For example, if Team A wins two games and Team B wins one, Team A will get two points and Team B gets one. However, if Team Bs pin count is higher, this team gets one point for total wood. Both teams will be tied in the competition.
During the season, each team faces the other teams in the league. As the season progresses, the team will compete in position rounds. This is where the teams that are in first and second place compete against each other; the teams in third and fourth place compete against each other and so on.
Some leagues are match point leagues. While the teams get game and total wood points, individuals also earn points for the team. In this type of league, each bowler bowls against an opponent from the other team. When one bowler has a higher individual score than his opponent, his team is awarded points.
There are different variations of bowling leagues. While most leagues have both men and women, there are some that are just for men or women. There are different forms of competition. For example, there are some leagues that use the actual pin count for the score. These are scratch leagues.
Handicap leagues help give an advantage to teams that have lower averages. This helps them compete against teams with better bowlers.
Currently, over three million people belong to bowling leagues. This number is expected to increase drastically over the next decade.

18.  09/05/09 Word Count 516 Candpin vs Ten pin BowlingID #669215
Posted: 9-25-2009 @ 11:47 am EDT

Introduced just a few years before the standardization of ten pin bowling, candlepin bowling became popular in Canada and the New England states. Comparing candlepin bowling to ten pin bowling is like comparing baseball to cricket. While there are similarities, such as using ten pins and the same pin layout, there are many differences between the two sports.
The candlepin bowling lane is similar to the ten pin lane in length and width. It has gutters, a foul line and a pin setter. However, the ten pin lanes are curved where it is difficult to roll the ball in a straight line. The candlepin lane has a level surface all the way across.
While there is one foul line in ten pins, there are three in candlepins. The first is the normal foul line where the bowler cannot step on or over. The second is the lob line which is ten feet from the foul line. Since bowlers can toss the ball rather than roll it, the ball must make contact before this line. The third line is in front of the number one pin. This is the dead wood line which shows what toppled pins are legally playable.
Where ten pins have a distinct top and bottom, candlepins have a more cylindrical shape. Looking like candles, they are thinner than tenpins. Candlepins are taller than tenpins. However, they can weigh no more than two pounds eight ounces, where the ten pins weight more than three pounds.
While both forms of bowling use the same pin layout, it is more difficult to get a strike in candlepins. Since the pins in ten pins are heavier, when a well-placed ball hits one, this causes a domino effect by falling and hitting the other pins. In candlepins the pins do not fall as easy. Sometimes, because of their weight and shape, a pin may fall down and come upright again.
In ten pins, fallen pins are cleared away after the first attempt of the frame. In candlepins the pins are not removes between balls. This deadwood can create an obstacle. However, it also can be a help. A bowler may hit the down pins to knock down those that are standing.
The candlepin bowling ball is smaller than the ones used in ten pins. Weighing no more than two pounds seven ounces, it is considered to be one of the smallest bowling balls. With the light weight, these are faster than ten pin bowling balls and they have a tendency to bounce.
A game of candlepin bowling is called a string. Like ten pins, the game consists of ten rounds. However, each round is called a box instead of a frame.
While in tenpins each bowler has two attempts to knock down ten pins per frame, the candlepin bowler has three attempts per box.
With a similar scoring system, bowling is bowling. Americans who participate in ten pin bowling can quickly grow to love candlepin bowling. Just by understanding the differences between the two sports, all that needs to be done is to make a few simple adjustments.

17.  09/04/09 Word Count 546 Rules of ten pin bowlingID #669214
Posted: 9-25-2009 @ 11:44 am EDT

Oh! The sounds of a ball rolling down a wooden lane and the sounds of the pins falling as the ball hits them, those are the sounds Americans love to hear when they participate in the pastime sports called bowling. The only sound they do not like to hear is the soft thump as the ball falls into the gutter. Ten pin bowling, or just bowling as most Americans call it has different rules and regulations. These include what type of pins and balls must be used, the playing area and scoring system.
The playing area is a lane that is sixty feet long, bordered with gutters on the side. This measures from the foul line to the head pin. The lane, consisting of thirty-nine wooden boards, is forty-one and a half inches wide. There are two sets of approach lines. The first is twelve feet from the foul line; the second is fifteen feet away.
The pins must be fifteen inches high and approximately four-and-a-half inches across at its widest point. One pin must weigh between three pounds six ounces and three pounds ten ounces. With ten pins on a lane, the weights of the single pins can vary by no more than four ounces. The pins must be trademarked USBC Approved.
The bowling ball must have a circumference of 2.25 feet or less and weight sixteen pounds or less. Except for finger holes, a trademark engraved in the ball and general wear, the ball must have a smooth surface.
A typical game of bowling has ten frames. The bowler, during each frame, has up to two attempts to knock down as many pins as he can. If he knocks down all ten pins with the first ball that is called a strike; if it takes two balls to knock down all ten pins that is called a spare. If the bowler gets a strike or a spare in the last frame, he gets to bowl in a bonus frame. He can possibly get three strikes in the tenth frame.
If a person's foot touches or steps across the foul line, any pins knocked over will not count. However, if he fouls on the first ball, he will be given a chance to score points on the second. He will only be awarded a spare if he knocks down all ten pins.
When more than one player is bowling at the same lane, each player takes turns bowling for a frame. The bowlers must figure out who is going to bowl first, second and so on before the game is started.
Understanding scoring is the important rule in bowling. When newcomers come into the sport, the scoring system is confusing to them. When they do not know the correct scoring system, the scores will be incorrect. While a bowler scores one point for every pin knocked over, a bowler has the possibility of getting a maximum score of 300. Therefore, they must know the proper scoring tabulation.
Whether for tournament or fun, bowling is a popular sport across the country. There are many bowling alleys in towns, cities and villages. While the bowling allies comply with the regulations on the pins, lanes and balls, it is up to the bowlers to understand the scoring system.
