I am attending Baker College. I will blog about my experiences class and student life. My experiences may be different from normal college students, because I am beginning school again 14 years after high school. I have four children and a husband outside of school. Follow me through my first year transition from being a stay-at-home mom, to becoming a full time college student.

15.  New classes and some good adviceID #688466
Posted: 2-23-2010 @ 9:39 pm EST

I registered for spring classes today. When I picked up my rotation schedule and the list of open classes, I was angry. All the classes on my list to take were night classes. I didn't enroll in night school, and I hate that all my math classes are only offered at night now. Very angry and ready to transfer from the evil college, I talk with my guidance councilor. Yes, there is a reason for guidence councilors to exist. A very good reason in fact. She gave me two suggestions of alternate classes to take and they were during the day. I was very happy. One other class that I am required to take will be offered during the day next spring. That also is a relief. I get to substitute a class that I do not want to take for one that I can live through, and I don't have to take three night classes this spring. So now I am pretty satisfied with my schedule and no longer angry with the evil institution.

My good advice is to consult your guidance councilor even if you don't think there is a need. They offer great advice and will do what it takes to make sure you are content with your schedule. Even after the first few classes, if it isn't working out, make sure you let them know. They will be able to help.

My classes next quarter are Pre-Calculus, Creative Writing!!!, and American Literature I for a total of 13 credits. Less credits than this quarter, but it will fit into my financial aid.

I finished my speech outline today. I have a hard time with it. I like just writing out a speech. I think that is a much better way than an outline. I guess it is because I have a much harder time speaking on the spot. Give me a pen and paper and I can come with quite a bit, but put me infront of an audience and I can't think of a thing to say.

Tomorrow I have to register for classes. I don't have enough financial aid to cover all of the classes they suggest. I'll have to see which one she suggests to wait on. I'm thinking Chemistry. I can handle waiting until next spring to that that!

13.  I need to do homework? Try telling the kids that!ID #688014
Posted: 2-19-2010 @ 6:36 pm EST

This is the first I have sat down today. It's six thirty and I'm supposed to be making dinner. I just finished balancing the check book. There is not one place I can look in my house that doesn't say it needs something done. I have to clean tonight.

My children have been asking questions non stop since they got home. Can they go for a walk, play a game, work on a math site online, have a snack, help with dinner? The questions just keep coming. I have not even looked at one of my books all day. The scary part is that I don't know how I'll be able to get this all done today and make it to my homework tomorrow. Last weekend was nice because I didn't have that much homework, but htis weekend I'm not sure how I'm going to get it all done!

12.  It's too late to thinkID #687818

Sorry I skipped tuesday. My husband pick up my new lap top from best buy and I got caught up playing with it. I had to install microsoft office that I bought from the book store. The guy at Best Buy told me to buy it from the book store at Baker because it was a lot less then what they were selling it for, and it was an upgraded version. I of course took his advice. Instead of paying 149 for just word, excel, and powerpoint, I paid 76 at Baker and got organizer, outlook, and others as well. Great advice!

My children were awake when I called home tonight. I prayed with each of them. Everyone I passed listened to my conversation. My youngest was telling me how she picked up all her toys in her room. When I told her good job for picking up all her toys, the cashier who was ringing out my food cheered for my daugher. It was funny. My teacher, who didn't seem to want to teach tonight, sat down next to me and talked until I finished eating. We were back to class a few minutes late, but I dont' think anyone cared. He repeated himself a lot today. I think he is burnt out already and its only halfway through the quarter. Can't wait to see how he'll be in another couple weeks!

11.  Tax returnID #687642
Posted: 2-15-2010 @ 10:45 pm EST

We spent our tax return today. Well most of it anyway. My husband bought a truck. He's been wanting one for a long time. Of course I wanted one too. There is nothing manlier than a Ford truck. That of course took most of our return, but it was definately worth it. He will get his stereo installed tomorrow. He's excited about that.

We splurged a little bit. My husband bought a couple Dragonball seasons that he was behind on collecting and I got a WOW 2009 CD.

Most of the money went to bills and paying rent early. Our next couple pay checks can be saved so we can stay ahead of bills.

The rest of the money we got back we spent on a laptop. I will go tomorrow to the Baker book store to get Microsoft Office for it. The guy at Best Buy said that he goes to Baker as well as that it is cheaper to buy it at the school book store than to buy it at Best Buy. I thought it was really nice of the guy. I didn't the laptop that I went there to get either. He showed me a better one. It has a shorter life for a battery, but it's storage capacity is better. It's not as pretty, but I guess only girls care about that kind of thing. It will work for school. I guess that should be all that matters. For the price it really was a better deal. Even if it isn't red.

Buying the laptop and the Microsof Office program will save me $3 an hour in day care whenever I need to do a PowerPoint presentation. I won't have to go to the library at school to do it. Spending more time at home and less time at school is a definate plus. Even if my laptop isn't red.

10.  Happy Birthday!ID #687540
Posted: 2-14-2010 @ 9:18 pm EST

Today is my son's birthday. He is eleven today. It's always hard to beleive with every birthday how old they are. Every year seems to go by so quickly. I remember carrying him around in my arms, watching him sleep next to me after eating, fretting as he walked into school for his first day of kindergarten. I have loved every stage that he has gone through. His party isn't until tuesday when my husband gets home, but was able to open one present today. A Bakugon. I don't know if I spelled it right. I have no idea why he likes them. I think they look cheap and dumb, but he loves them. He was so excited. I won't say what else he got until after his party.

Hope everyone had a wonderful valentine's day.

9.  Down on teachersID #687380
Posted: 2-13-2010 @ 12:21 pm EST

We all have some teachers that we do not like, and then we have some that we like a lot. There is one particular teacher that I had a couple quarters ago the I like. I thought he was a very good teacher and a nice man all around. I overheard (because they were talking accross the entire classroom) a conversation about this particular teacher. They were saying how he loved to talk and were surprised when he said he had a girl friend. They said that until he said that, they thought he was gay. They continued to talk the teacher down for a few minutes. I couldn't help but wonder if I should stick up for him. Would he really care. I'm sure he would, and probably feel upset by their comments. But would saying anything really change their attitude? I feel bad now that I didn't stick up for him, but what would that have accomplished if I had?

In their defense, I can say that I have disliked a teacher openly. I had one (the same quarter as the one they were discussing) that swore every other word. He was very vulgar and didn't care to hide it. I understand that we are all adults in college, but he should think about his words offending someone.

Anyway, I don't think people should talk bad about teachers. They are just as different as the students are, and they certainly try their best to teach everyone what they need to know.

8.  easy dayID #687274

The kids survived being home alone, even though my son didn't want to go to bed till I got home. I of course expected this reaction with him. He's a mommy's boy for sure.

Yesterday was an easy day at school. My mid-term exam was the same thing as my practice exam which I studied. I had already given my presentation in PowerPoint so all I had to do was listen to others. We finished class early. In my speech class we played scattergories. That was my day. Easy.

The kids have school off today and monday. Since I have not spent as much time with them as I have like, I am taking them roller skating today. They are all excited.

Tonight is the first night that the kids will be home alone while I'm at school. I'm very nervous. It hasn't been that bad the last few weeks with my husband here, but he's not going to be home from Alabama till the middle of the night. This is the first night they have ever had to go to bed by themselves. Yes, I will be calling frantically at break time! Honestly, if I didn't have a test tonight I'd call in sick. A cold can be mistaken for the flu with the right tone of voice. Ha ha, not that I've ever done that myself. That I remember anyway. Kids home alone, eek!

6.  Study or Sleep?ID #686880
Posted: 2-8-2010 @ 7:50 pm EST

When a cold sets in, all I want to do is cuddle on the couch with a hot cup of tea and watch movies that make me cry. Unfortionately, I have a mid-term exam thursday. When faced with what I want to do to get better, and what I have to do, I try my best to compromise. I put on an uninteresting movie, cuddle on the couch, and study my notes. The words all run together after a while, but then I can watch the stupid movie for a few minutes till my head clears a bit and study again.

My ear hurts again. I've lost count on how many times over the last three months that I've had this pain in my ear. Unfortionately, I have not found time to set up an appointment. Classes for myself, choir practice for the kids, safety patrol, dentist appointments, and everything else that goes with taking care of four children. My husband has been adding to my loss of time lately with meaningless trips to wherever he feels like going at the time. I know he just wants to spend time with me, but I'm feeling a little neglected myself. Hopefully I don't have to wait five more weeks to get my ear checked out.
