For Lance.
Maison Diable is my take on horror's classic "haunted house" theme.
The idea to write a horror story can be largely attributed to the Phantom Manor ride in Disneyland, and wondering what the story behind it could be, or rather: what it would have been if I had written it. The result is still mainly in my head, waiting to be put down into story format. Horror is not really a genre I usually venture into, so this project is entirely experimental. It's turning into something deeper and darker than I thought I would write. There are references to demonic rituals, human sacrifice, and other kinds of violence. Although on the whole they are only hinted at or mentioned in passing, I think it merits an 18+ rating.
Literary references abound; there are many great writers whose works have helped this story take shape in my head, and to whose greatness I can only ever aspire. These great minds include Dante Alighieri, Christopher Marlowe, Mary Shelley, Oscar Wilde, and H.P. Lovecraft. If this story achieves nothing else on its own, I hope it may still at least provide a vaguely amusing game of "find the references".
