Shalom! I was born outside of Haifa, moved to Tel Aviv when I was twelve, and served in the Israeli Defense Force for two years. Now, I am a student at TAU.

I hope I can show the world the humanity of my nation. We're not so different, after all.

I have to say, I agree with Lynn McKenzie 's take, as well as the other commenters. There are a lot of us here in the U.S. that look at our country's relationship with Israel with ambivalence. Israel is sort of the "golden child" to the U.S., and not necessarily in a good way. I myself, am not an unquestioning supporter of Israel. I think Israel has every right to exist, but this blind, joined-at-the-hip "alliance" between Israel and the U.S. is extremely dysfunctional. And I will be the first to say that the U.S.'s involvement in the politics of Israel, in particular, and the politics of the Middle East, in general, has done more harm than good, and it's driven by something that neither average Americans, nor Israelis, understand...

And I have to say, while I'm not pleased with everything President Obama has done, I am glad he's taking a tough stance with Israel ~ no offense intended at all. But our unquestioning support of Israel has vilified us, it's turned us into demons walking the earth within the rank and file of the Middle East. And, mostly, it's our fault. It's our fault for meddling in politics that don't concern us. That might be an isolationist view, but I think there is some truth to it. And I have to agree with Lynn. You guys have been fighting this fight for centuries. Why is it up to us to fix it for you? Or fix it for the Palestinians, for that matter...?

I hope you know that I mean no offense, because that's certainly not what was intended. But this is a sticky subject for a lot of people over here, especially now. A lot of us are watching our own country head straight for the crapper, and we're wondering why and how, this blind support of Israel. It's just a fact...

Ah . . . . foreign policy, the downfall of many a politician. It seems to be an almost impossible situation to keep people in your own country happy while keeping the best interest of a foreign nation in mind when dealing on a global level. I, on the one hand, think you guys should send the Palestinians to Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, or any number of your Middle Eastern neighbors. There's no way in this world I would let another people come in and cut my country in half. But then, I'm not a politician. I also realize doing that would cause much death and destruction and, no doubt, bring about war.

I agree that the United States sometimes oversteps its boundaries but along with being a super power comes responsibility. The US does a whole lot of good around the world. I sometimes think the money spent in foreign countries would go a long way toward making America stronger if it were spent at home. Let me remind you, I'm not a politician and these are only my humble opinions.

Manners are a tricky thing when it comes to different cultures. I once had a horse poop on my shoe. When I kicked it off and nearly spewed my lunch I was told the horse had blessed me and I was rude for kicking it off my shoe. I'm sorry but if getting a blessing means having poop on my shoe, skip the blessing.

I've had experience with Israelis, Canadians, and New Yorkers. The New Yorkers were by far the most rude.

Tomorrow I leave for New York! I am so excited! I have all my things packed, and I have my fleece I bought to wear in Europe, and I have bought also a winter coat. My friends and I are very excited.

I have been invited by a friend of my father's to attend Shabbat and temple services with a Jewish family in New York. I am both excited and slightly nervous. I do not know anything about American Jews and I have heard some things that I am not sure of. It will be an interesting experience! Of course, because this man is a friend of my father, I must be a good guest. I must use manners. Evidently, Americans are particular about manners.

But I cannot wait!
