My Journey
Rated: E | Book | Other | #1916729
my attempts at getting published and finishing my writing.
2.1.13: So here I am writing because it is what I do. Without writing I am an emotional wreck but that is not what this is about. I want to write down my experiences with my writing so I can possibly figure out what I am doing wrong with trying to get my stories published. I submitted "Nightmare" to Glimmer Train for a contest that should be known if I am rejected in March. So far, I have not been accepted yet for any of my writing at Glimmer Train, which I would consider a high honor considering that they are kind of picky about what they publish.

I have a few other places I want to try to submit to but I have to finish the pieces first. So I will let you know what happens. I am off to write some more on my novel that is almost done, just have to finish my research about who dying where. It is a lot more work then I thought it would be when I started.

On with the work....
Well. I have gotten a short story published but now the problem is promoting it. It is not enough to just get it out there when you have hundreds and hundreds of new books being published all the time. So now comes time for me to get down to the nitty gritty of having to do research and learning about social media. Because of my age, people assume I am up to date on all of the latest and greatest ways of social media. Unfortunately, I am one of those old souls that actually dislikes having to learn this but for the well being of my story and all that will follow: I WILL LEARN.

It is funny to think that I have to sit and actually research and appeal to my friends and family for help in learning things such as Twitter and other sites. I have established a facebook site finally so look me up (A.J. Barretts) and a Twitter accound #Ajbarretts so come and check it out if you would like to. I appreciate any feedback anyone could give me or advice! I will take any advice anyone could offer to help me figure out what I am doing with these applications! If anyone knows of any other sites or networking areas I should attempt to learn as well, please feel free to let me know.

Inspiration for the day:
Look at the world from the perspective of a child, pretend you are that super hero or that there is a monster in the closet (or under the bed) and live your adventures. The world has many interesting things to offer if you just look.

Rejected again but no worries
Sooooo, yeah it was rejected. But that is okay because I have an even better use for it right now! I am polishing up my story and going to publish it in a short story collection. I have one short story published already on e-readers and now it is time I got a few more stories out there! So now my focus is on getting more published by polishing these babies until they shine!

If anyone is interested, the name of the short story I published was "Last Call" by A.J. Barretts (that's me!) and is available on all e-readers through Smashwords or it is also being carried by all the bookstores online as well.

Thanks for reading. Keep scribbling yourselves.

3.14.13
After a very much needed vacation to Nashville Tennessee, I am back to fixing my writing to publish on e-readers. I am struggling with my cover images which I have picked out just am unsure how to fix them properly with the title and author on the pages. I am still learning. Also, I am still waiting to hear back from the writing contest on my latest entry. Will know in the next week or so, but I am not hopeful it will be accepted as I found some glaring mistakes in the manuscript. Well, nothing ventured nothing gained. I have to look at this as a learning experience and to slow down and really look carefully at my work before sending it out. A good lesson to take my time with my publishing endevers.

Can't wait until my next entry which will have wether or not my story was accepted.

all smiles
While I am still waiting for the acceptance/rejection of my story, I have at least found a place to publish my short stories in a way that makes me very excited to get started. The hard part with this is to make sure everything is proof read so my work doesn't come off as unprofessional.

always waiting
So, I am waiting on a response to a story entered into a contest and it always seems like forever to wait when it is your work on the line. Although, I guess I would rather wait wtih a chance of actually winning then finding out in two weeks I've been denied. I have tried to send some of my work out to those that say they comment on any piece they reject and to this day I have received no information on why my pieces have been rejected. Ah well, back on the band wagon and here we go again. I will just keep on submitting and hoping and editing my work.

I have to wait until about March 25th, 2013 to know if my story was accepted. Doesn't stop me from checking the website everyday. I will keep you posted on what is going on with it. Good luck to anyone who is entering their work for publication, if you find anyone who really gives feedback when they reject something please let me know. Apreciate it!
