Day 20

Quote:You will find that I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me.

Source: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Context:Dumbledore has just been suspended by the Board of Governors following the attacks on several students.

Although the quote says "school", I will allow you to choose your own setting - be it a hospital, a restaurant, an office, or whatever.

I had worked at a place for ten years, a good portion of my life. I liked to think people respected me and liked working with me. Except for my bosses. I was a manager and head of my shift and I tried to make everyone feel welcome and to have a good time. Well, that turned out to mean I was 'too weak' for my boss and hers. I was either having too much fun or I was too mean. I couldn't find a middle ground.
Then you have the workers who are after your job. I wasn't gone two weeks and they had someone in training for my position. Sure, you have to be replaced but not only did she take my job she went and got a higher position that I was in line for that they told me 'I wasn't ready'.
A lot of people thought it was wrong how they treated me and I get it, everyone is in it for the money. It's their money on the line if you mess up, they don't get their bonus. Well, why should I help you? What's in it for me? Oh, right, my meager paycheck that I can't even survive on myself let alone raise children on.
There isn't anyone from that time left anymore. I'm sure I have been forgotten, but that's okay. I am happier now in my current position then I ever was when I was working for a corporation that basically treat you like herded cattle. At least I know I'm important to the people I work for.
So now as I write this from the deck of my yaht while sipping pink champagne I am proud to say I now own that corporation and those who were above me are now under me and they don't like it so much.

Day 19

Quote:Daddy's gone mad, hasn't he?

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context:Vernon Dursley is driving the family all over the country trying to give the wizards and owls the slip so they can't deliver Harry's letter to him.

Daddy's have it rough
They have it tough
They learn to love
To have strength from above

They wipe noses
The door closes
Vomit on the floor
Sickness is like a war.

Mommy is a work
They have a knowing smirk
He can't take care of us like her
He won't be so sure.

Daddy's have it rough
They have it tough
To have girls or boys
They know the fear and the joys.

Day 18

Quote:Why would I go looking for someone I know wants to kill me?

Source: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Context:Harry has found out that Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban just to kill him. Mr Weasley warns Harry not to go looking for Black.

People always go looking for trouble. It doesn't matter what kind it is but they get tired of the mundane life most of them lead. If you don't like someone, you talk behind their back. If you hear about someone escaping from police custody or someone had just robbed a place close to you some lock their doors, the other half get in their cars and go looking for the bad guy in hopes of being the person to call in the tip.
It's about getting attention, about following the crowd, about living the drama that could be real life but usually is not. It's about 'baby dad' and 'baby mama'. It's about drugs and snitching. It's about what your neighbor is doing.
Life should be about trying to improve your life, the life of your family. It should be about going on vacations and being happy. Those people who are glued to their phone, to Facebook, all to catch a glimpse of what other people are going through in their daily lives they forget about their own.
Take a break from the rumors, from the lies. Learn to tell the difference. If you can't, learn to ask the source but don't make it worse by saying 'well that's what so and so told me.' That would be creating the drama, giving the pot a big old stir.
So, most people always go looking for some kind of trouble. Be that breath of fresh air for someone today and don't follow the crowd. Be there with a big smile and say 'not my monkeys, not my circus'.

Day 17

Quote:Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss?.

Source: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Context:This is the closing line of the riddle set by the Sphinx in the maze during the third task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Which creature would you want to kiss?
A dolphin with wings?
A giraffe with fangs?
A monkey with lips as deadly as arsenic?

No I would not like to kiss these creatures.
Not here, not now,
Not there, not before.
Never would I kiss those creatures.

Which creature would you want to kiss?
A bat with a charming personality?
A spider with tap shoes?
A snake with cotton candy fangs?

No I would not like to kiss these creatures.
Not here, not now,
Not there, not before.
Never would I kiss those creatures.

Which creature would you want to kiss?
A beautiful woman perhaps would be best.
No beast or reptile or skittery bug.
None of the nasty creatures that came from above.

Yes I would like to kiss that creature.
A lovely woman so frail and soft.
Not a creature at all.
A dream of the soul.

Day 16

Quote:There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context:Harry and Ron have just saved Hermione and knocked out a twelve-foot-tall mountain troll. It is the one single event that brings the three of them together.

A Trio of Friendship

Good things come in threes.
So do celebrity deaths.
The three musketeers
The day the music died.

The rule of three in writing,
Threes are funnier,
Threes are effective,
Threes are satisfying.

Then there are bad threes,
Being the third wheel
Third place,
Triplets!

Harry Ron and Hermione
Three friends
Three amigos
Three wizards.

Day 15

Quote:It was as though they had been plunged into a fabulous dream.

Source: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Context:Harry and Ron have missed the Hogwart's Express after being magically blocked from entering Platform 9 3/4. They are now heading to school in Mr Weasley's flying Ford Anglia.

Blurred realities in a sea of color
Viewing an alternate reality
No one to stop your choices
No control over your thoughts

Sound is muffled
Movements are stunted
For a few moments it's a fear
fear of the fraudulent reality

It can be a wonderful experience
Sane and obscure
Wonders of what is real
What can happen if you believe

It can be a horrible experience
Death and fear
Cold and bitter
What can happen if you fail

Dreams are illusive
They are wild and free
Have no bounds do they
Or you to understand

Day 14

Quote:You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context: Draco has just extended a hand of friendship to Harry. He tells Harry that some wizard families are better than others, and that Harry shouldn't make friends with the wrong sort of families.

"I think I can figure out who the right sort is, thanks."
My friend is Harry Potter. I never would have imagined the boy I grew up hearing about, wondering what his life was like, who he would be, is my friend. My mother would tell us 'Would you want to be that poor boy who lost his mum and dad?' Of course we didn't. We, well, mostly Fred and George were pretty aweful to mother now and again. We heard about how brave he must have been, just a small baby who beat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Just a baby. His mother and father dead and he was missing.
Now he's here. With me, at Hogwarts. It makes me wonder why he wanted to be friendly with our family. Perhaps it was just because we were the first family he had seen. He doesn't know much about our world. Mother said he was most likely in hiding. Maybe he was being sheltered by a muggle family. That would make sense.
I have waited a long time to be here at school. With a friend like Harry Potter by my side, I'm sure it will be a great experience.

Day 13

Quote:His life's ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother.

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Harry has just arrived at Number 12 Grimmauld Place, and Ron is explaining why he thinks the house-elf Kreacher is "a nutter" (crazy person). The Black family had a long history of beheading their house-elves (once they got too old to work) and mounting the heads on the wall of the house - Kreacher looks forward to this fate.

Wishes and hopes are all child's play.
They come to the weak and hope to stay.
Perseverance and ethics are all good traits.
Tears and sweat make the cake.

"Yes sir, no sir, yes mam, no mam"
Owners and the owned,
Live chained together
One hoping to help the other.

No more slaves!
People yell in the streets.
It's inhumane, terrible, appalling.
Some like it, don't stop their dreams.

Then to be owned all death long.
Hung on a wall
To be remembered forever more.
Oh what a most glorious fate.

Day 12

Quote:October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces.

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: One of JK Rowling's better transitions from one chapter to the next, as she describes the start of a harsh Scottish winter.

I know it is always hard. The days are shorter, the nights seem endless, and even in the day the clouds block the sun from feeding us its glittering rays of light. It is gloomy and depressing. The beginning of the year is always spent wondering when it will end. People watch the news in hopes they see temperatures in the fifties.
I understand. Human beings do not hibernate, though some try to. They stay in the homes all day and all night, cooking hot soup and brewing cocoa with tiny marshmallows in hopes to cheer themselves up. Christmas is a joy for children but mostly stress and sleepless nights for adults. Instead of being a time of cheer and wonder it's a time of fear and uneasiness. How do we pay the bills? How do we get gifts for all the children? How are we going to fit everyone in our busy holiday schedule?
They want the snow for the holidays. Sorry it doesn't always work out. Any other time they hate to see the diverse flakes falling from the sky, creating a beautiful scenery. I never get tired of it.
Complaints fill my mind as I can hear all about cold feet, cracked and dry skin, runny noses and coughs. This is not my fault, you know I'm coming. You know I can bring sickness and aches. Better to prepare for it then try and battle it when it comes.
I'm sorry for the trouble I bring. Maybe next time around I will ease myself into it but Autumn doesn't like to stick around long. She is a rather large drama queen. I would like to be your friend. My name, is Winter and I only come around once a year.

Day 11

Quote:It unscrews the other way

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Professor McGonagall is growing increasingly annoyed with the presence of Dolores Umbridge at Hogwart's, and she catches Peeves the poltergeist trying to loosen a chandelier. This line is her veiled resistance to Umbridge.

Some people are born to rob you of happiness.
These beings should be thrown to the dragons.
Women are mean and men are cruel.
Maybe they should just melt into the snow.

Hot tempered and cold hearted
They look to find any way to kill
Kill your soul, your body, your mind.
Maybe they should just fall off their broomstick.

They make spiders scurry
Snakes slither
Vultures fly
Maybe they should just get struck by a chandelier.

Day 10

Quote:"No," she said, her voice quivering with anger, "but I will write to your mother.”

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Fred and George Weasley have just tested their Fainting Fancies on a group of First Year Gryffindors. Hermione, as a prefect, feels obliged to protect the First Years, but instead of handing out lines or a detention, this is her threat.

All the children grown and out of the house. It was to be expected, you raise them, watch them grow and they leave you.
Molly Weasley stood at the window, quill and parchment hovering next to her. There was a look on her face of sadness and relief. All seven of the Weasley children were gone from the home. The elder ones gone on to better things, the younger at Hogwarts. Her house was empty and with Arthur at work, she could barely stand the silence.
When do they call or write? When they need something of course. Which is fine. If you are not needed what would be the point? Mum can you spare a gallion? Mum, I need somewhere to stay when I come to town. Sure, it may not be 'Mum, help me with my shoes please', or 'Mum, do I have to wear this?' But it works just the same.
She wanted to start working on her memoir years ago, there was much to write. However, she was never sure where to start. The beginning she thought. Too many bad memories to come across so soon. The end? Sure, why not? Fill the emptiness of her heart at her children leaving, relish in the moments she had when they came home for break.
The sky always seemed to grow darker these days she looked out the window. Yes, the days were getting shorter but it was a black darkness. No stars, no moon, just you and nothingness. Some nights after Arthur would fall asleep she would turn out all the lights. There would be nothing but the black around her. There were times she was sure she heard whispers in the dark. Never could she figure out what they were saying but it scared her.
Do parents go crazy when the nest is empty? Even muggle mothers must have this wonder. What is there to do but live your life. What happens when your children are your life?
The quill and parchment landed softly on the table next to her as a tear fell from her eyes. She didn't wipe it away. She was alone. She knew the feeling would pass but oh how lonely she was now.
She stood up straight. Things would get worse before they get better. She knew they would. Call it intuition.

Day 9

Quote:Well, we were always to fail that one

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Ron and Harry have just taken their Divination exam (a subject that neither boy has taken seriously), and Ron is discussing what happened during his exam.

Foresight

How does one know to stop short?
Don't take that road, take the other.
Pessimists look and snort.
It does not matter, one way or another.

A sense of foreboding in the back of your mind.
A sickening feeling that doesn't match
Believers say don't ignore that kind,
You can easily miss the catch.

Some people say they can see the future
While it's not clear it's like deja vu
To them there is no humor
To them, you should take your cue.

Don't take that plane,
Miss that taxi
Don't travel to Spain,
Look and see
The world is dangerous all around
You need to look at it more profound.

Day 8

Quote:What if I don't care?

Source: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Context: Harry had been dating Ginny Weasley for a couple of weeks, but tries to end it as he is afraid that Voldemort will attack her simply because they are a couple. This quote is Ginny's response.

"What if I don't care?" Her response echoed in his mind day and night. "I care!" He would yell it in the shower, in the night when he was alone, all the time the words sat on his lips ready to explode at a moments notice. Poor Ginny. He missed the days she was just Ron's cute younger sister. Before the battles, the deaths, the lies. She was becoming hardened to life. It was hard to imagine, her angelic face a blank stare to the destruction one could only imagine, and someday, the younger generations would only read about in history books.
There was always something wrong, something that would haunt him. Why would he put anyone else through that? Why should he even try to care for someone? Because she cared for him. That wasn't his choice. He couldn't deny he didn't feel for her too, would it be even more cruel to deny her what love he could still give?
Harry turned on his side. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know who to ask for advice. They had more important things to worry about then his personal life. Thinking about it just worked him up and he tossed and turned. Why him? Why does his life have to be so different then everyone elses? All the pain, the abuse, the torture. Now he can't even grow up properly.
Closing his eyes didn't help. He just saw death and fire when they shut behind his glasses. The only way he could fall asleep anymore was if he took a potion. Not exactly the healthiest way to go. But when this was all over, and someday, he knew it would be, he promised to go away. No one would know where he was and he would sleep, eat good food, travel. He would be the boy who lived, conquered, and disappeared, if only for a few years. After that who knows? Maybe he will have children and have the family he wished he could have with his own parents.
He just hoped Ginny would be at his side when it happened. That night he didn't see death and fire, just darkness.

Quote:Just because it’s taken you three years to notice, Ron, doesn't mean no one else has spotted I'm a girl!

Source: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Context: Ron Weasley has just asked long-time friend Hermione Granger to accompany him to the Yule Ball, as a last-ditched effort not to have to go stag.

Girls

Born of beauty, grace, and love
They are creatures of splendor, royalty, class.
Heart on their sleeve they love the wicked
Blind eye to evil, they try to salvage.

Their attempts at beauty go too far
When the natural appearance becomes blanketed
A dazzling smile, a confidence so fine
They bruise easily in this dire world.

Broken and beaten they slink away
Into a world full of dull, black, and gray.
Girls becoming women smiles fade.
Leaving innocents behind, emotions change.

Changes from birth to being born again
They learn to battle from within
Courage, will, strength, be challenged.
Until someone takes her hand and says,
"It will be okay."

Quote:I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for.

Source: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Context: Sirius Black has just trapped Peter Pettigrew in the Shrieking Shack. Sirius was imprisoned for the murder of Peter Pettigrew (who actually faked his own death), and now he plans to kill Pettigrew.

The memories are what drove him to a kind of madness he could only experience. His own Hell on Earth. Sirius Black was never one to worry much about the Death Eaters and evil witches and wizards of his time. If he left them alone, he would hope they would show him the same amount of interest, none. Then there was Dumbledore and his army of the righteous. The ones who wanted Voldemort dead and his followers. Sure he wanted them all gone too but it was a losing battle, all but Remus saw that.

Remus and Peter.

And now the three of them had been together for a short time. They could have destroyed him, no, they should have. One hundred percent should have killed that rat. Harry was the voice of reason. Let him face the same torture in Azkaban as Sirius had. Harry can then live the life he should have lived in the wizarding world and Sirius could be a free man. Kill him, then what? Produce a body of the man he killed all those years ago?

Now he was gone again, disappeared into the night. Sirius would find him and kill him. He had to. The clearing of his name was not even important anymore. With Lily and James gone and now Harry in the cross fires of a war he should have never been a part of, his freedom was a feeble hope in the wind.

With the moon starting to fall and Buckbeak asleep only a few feet away, the tired man transformed into padfoot, the lovable stray dog that made a good living begging for food and a nice pat on the head. He would rather walk the earth on four paws with the war over then on two feet knowing it would never end.

Perhaps some day in the future he would be free, so would Harry. Harry would be free of the nightmares, of the pain in his scar, of the bits and pieces of memories he has unfortunately kept as a baby. The green light, his mother screaming, all the death that came after. His godson, the one beacon of hope, the one good thing that could come out of the pain he has held on to. He could do right by James and Lily, by Harry. And one day he would, he was sure of it.

Quote:I’d worked that much out for myself

Source: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Context: Ron Weasley has just explained to Harry that you can't break an Unbreakable Vow.

Promises, Promises

I will stand by your side,
Protect you and keep you.
I will not run and hide,
I will take your cue.

I have abandoned my post,
Abandoned you and ran.
They were words at most,
I will only do what I can.

They were promises at best,
Anyone can make them.
They form the top of the crest,
The sapling formed no stem.

Promises that held your heart and soul,
Promises that killed your spirit now.
I want you to know that was never the goal,
To that I make another vow.

Never trust a promise of a friend,
For what is it.
But the beginning of the end.
From the mouth of a hypocrite.

Quote: . . . the very last place you would expect astonishing things to happen.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context: Baby Harry has just been dropped off on his aunt and uncle's doorstep in the early hours of the morning, and J K Rowling has set the scene of Privet Drive as somewhere normal and boring.

A baby is born every day. They are not a rare happening in the human world and the animal world but is one ever not amazed at the miracle that is life? For mammals a sperm meets egg and then it multiplies and the DNA comes together to form eyes, ears, toes, and fingers. If one thing would go wrong, if something was missing or added it could cause devastating consequences.
Some babies are born with half a brain, some with missing limbs, some with webbed feet. These babies are still loved by someone. Sometimes not their mothers and fathers but by the nurses that care for them, that was one of the first people to see them enter the world.
Most are born without disfigurement. They are a joy to their parents. The feeling of their soft skin on yours is one of God's most amazing gifts. To be a mother is to know yourself. To find who you really are. I'm sure being a father is much of the same. It becomes a staple in your life, the thing that drives you, who makes you who you are.
Living in a mansion or an apartment building, astonishing things can happen anywhere you see. Sure there are cookie-cutter suburbs where everything seems to be the same, the same homes, the same cars, trampolines in the back yard. For babies, everything is amazing and new and wonderful and just astonishing. As is the Blessing of a baby.

Quote:"Wet," he said truthfully.

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Ron Weasley had just asked what Harry's first kiss with Cho Chang (Harry's first kiss with any girl) was like. Cho had been crying at the time as she was grieving for her her boyfriend who Voldemort killed the year before.

Kisses

Oh the different kind of kisses. The types and variations, the moments that stand still. First kisses, seconds, last, there are some that have been good, bad, and ugly. There are iconic kisses both on screen and in real life. I have seen spouses kiss goodbye at the airport gate. I have seen parents kiss their children goodbye on the first day off school, both with tears in their eyes.
Kisses between husband and wife are different then kisses between girlfriend and boyfriend, lovers, and even those who have woven their desires into affairs. You can tell if you look, study the kiss. There is a lingering effect, the closeness of the body, the way they touch or don't touch. It's in the way they look at each other after breaking the seal. Do they wait, hoping for more? Do they start to cry?
A husband and wife, if saying goodbye, would not cry. They wouldn't be able to stand the fact of losing the other, so they don't think about it. Lovers, maybe they know this is the end, they are maybe to never see each other again. They would cry. They would kiss again and again until the last possible moment.
I remember many firsts with my husband, the first time we met, our first kiss, the first 'I love you' declared. Is it because I knew? I knew from those first moments that he was the one that I would be with forever? Does the body know? The brain? It must, there is no other reason to believe otherwise.

Quote:Well, it changes every day, you see

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Harry's aunt and uncle have just caught him surreptitiously listening to the news on TV. None of Harry's school-friends have written to him all summer long, so he listens to the news every day for signs of problems in the wizarding world.

All is well

Waiting for tomorrow,
for something to happen.
For something to go wrong,
something to go right.

Waiting for tomorrow,
for you to visit me.
For anyone to listen to me,
anyone to see me.

Waiting for tomorrow,
to leave this place.
To leave this way of living,
leave my sorrows and pain.

Waiting for forever,
forever to know the truth.
Forever to know why,
know that all is well.

Quote: Scars can come in useful

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context: Professor McGonagall has noticed the scar on baby Harry's head. After asking Professor Dumbledore if there is anything he can do about it, he replies saying that scars can come in useful, and that he himself has a scar on his knee in the shape of the map of the London Underground.

Scars

There was a droplet of cold that started from the base of his neck and headed down his spine as it always did when his sixth sense alerted him of danger. The London officer only saw a flash of green after the lights went out in the London Underground. He heard an evil voice but know one else knew what had happened to him.
Death was instantaneous as it always is with the Avada Kedavra curse he knew. It was only his second time using it on someone. The second time he felt the strength of his powers. His way to becoming the most powerful wizard of his time. Someday he would rid the world of muggles, mudbloods, and Albus Dumblebore. It would happen. He had seen a premonition of it in his dream.
Muggles were useless people after all. No magic, no wits, not even a sense of what was happening around them. And those that supported them, that embraced their culture. He laughed at the thought as he stood over his victim. How interested were they. They had help from wizards throughout the years. If they didn't, they would have never survived anything their kind had to endure.
A hot pain shot through his left arm. Blood started to leak through his cloak. He let his guard down.
"Don't move! I have called the police"
Tom turned around, the muggle must have been scared the moment they saw his face. And they should have been.
         "Avada Kedavra"
His third kill. He would always remember those two, one that he relished, one that he got a scar from on his left arm in the shape of a cloud.
