Following the advice of my good friendly rival (no longer on the site

), I have decided to create my own journal. This gives me a bit more freedom than I could achieve in the Daily Writing Challenge.

This journal started out somewhat randomly. However, I have been fairly consistant at daily writing. Sometimes I use it for writing-related vents, and sometimes I use it to help me plot my stories or figure out my characters. I'll let you know where I am on getting published, assuming I make progress. On occasion, I use it just to rant in general, and sometimes there are site-related goods or bads. But, to be fair, I try to let you know in the title if I am working on character development.

edited to add: I decided to make the split. All of my writing germs will be contained in "Invalid Item"

I ramble. Doesn't this introduction prove it?

My new goal: To complete my novel - Slipstream - in the next 30 days
Start Date: 9 Aug 2010
Goal End Date: 24 Sept 2010 (there was a lot of lag but the next serious start date was 8/30)
The primary goal is to write for 3-4 hours every day. The original was 4 but I think, with four kids, that 3 is more plausible. Whatever word count comes, will come

Wow, you've got a lot on your plate! Congratulations on getting you articles published.

I homeschooled my kids too, and it was never easy to mix work in. If I could have avoided outside work until they were both done, I would have, but of course a person needs money. If you can find work you can do from home, that's excellent. Best of luck!

Self-confidence helps in life. I've worked on it with my travels and trying new things occasionally. I sure wasn't born with it.

Marriage... well try... but if nothing's changed it puts you back in the same spot... maybe further down the road, but still in the same spot... hopefully some things will change for the better soon or with time.

It's okay for Real Life to take the forefront for a couple weeks. The kids are going to be hurt and confused regardless... I'd focus on them. Unless your sanity really depends on getting this done in a certain amount of time, Jonathan & Co. will wait.

Why wouldn't they have started the tests on a Friday? Some labs go 24/7/365. Friday is as good a day as any other. If this is an LDS character in an LDS world then it must adhere to LDS world-view and culture. If not, then not. Since Friday is the sabbath for some, Saturday for others, Sunday as you know... the lab may not even have been open. Everything depends on cultural context.

1925 Kansas during Prohibition and drunk? Probably not. After the KU championship in 1988 or 2007? Most definitely so.

The problem is, Jonathan is a very straight-laced, follow-the-rules kinda guy, and I'm going to have him steal something. Technically, he's stealing information, not for resell, for "noble" purposes, but still...there's got to be some kind of moral upheaval about it, and I'm not sure that he would be persuaded with "the ends justifies the means" kind of argument. On top of that, he's going to go through this back-and-forth moral conundrum, but the reader isn't going to know why until later, which is a big pain.

Is Jonathan emotional or not?

If not:

1. money
2. power
3. 'the right thing'
4. fun
5. chaotic... just because

If emotional:

1. feels right
2. love
3. kindness
4. a reaching out (tolerance if not love)
5. beauty (like an artist)

Most of us have enough balance that we are conflicted by: Beauty v Money; Power v Love.

And in the Real World we don't always make the 'right chioice'.

Jonathan may be conflicted... with two very powerful priorities or virtues seemingly in conflict. How he resolves them may push the story along, but what they are and why give the story depth and bring it to life.
