Sorry! I've been editing novels for release (yippee!) and writing my weekly commentary for the Frontstretch Newsletter. That will continue to happen every Tuesday for the foreseeable future, even if I'm not blogging.
My last couple week's of commentary are at these links: (look for commentary by S.D. Grady--exclusive!)
Dale Earnhardt Jr. officially will say goodbye to Dale Earnhardt Inc. on Thursday morning, Yahoo! Sports has learned.
A highly placed source within DEI as well as additional sources familiar with the situation told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday afternoon that both Junior and teammate Martin Truex Jr. will announce Thursday morning that they are leaving the DEI camp at the end of this season and will drive for Earnhardt's heretofore Busch Series operation, JR Motorsports.
Hmmm ... yes where does that leave DEI? I don't follow NASCAR but Earnhardt is an American icon and I'm sure we-all will be hearing about this for weeks. Does this give other drivers a chance or weaken DEI to where it becomes irrelevant? Will others leave?
We've been going to both races for a decade now Even bought the RV when the traffic jangled our nerves. Normally we catch one other big event each year, but the RV sprung a major $$$ leak and we're saving for a new one.
Dale knew that Jeff Gordon would be a force in NASCAR long after he was gone, as did the Petty's and Parson's of his rookie days. That is the way it is. Someone new always comes along.
One year when Dale won the championship and Rusty won the final race, on the victory lap one carried a Davey Allison flag and the other carried an Alan Kulwicki (sp) flag in tribute to two fallen racers that they both raced hard and heavy. No disrespect or nose thumbing, just tribute to fallen racers.
If Dale Jr can be the first racer, son, and man to congratulate Jeff Gordon, the rest of us should do the same.
Perhaps I am not juvenile, but I wouldn't pay 100's of dollars for tickets to the race, beer, souveniers, etc, and risk getting banned from the track for throwing trash at the track, or drivers.
