PROLOUGE

The shadows drew the cloak of darkness in around the waiting figure, making it even more suffocating under the low bush. The only light was of that streaming through the tall windows of the palatial estate and the only sounds were from the banquet inside. An elf crouched, silently, near the west end of the enclosed courtyard. The dank smell of the wet grass, soaking through the knees of her cloaks, mingled with the faint smell of the silhouetted white roses. Her palms sweat while grasping the dagger tightly in her small fist, waiting. The young girl's sensitive, slightly pointed ears pricked at the slightest sound, her amber eyes nearly glowed with malice, and her heart raced with adrenaline palpitating against her breast bone, but neither gave her away.

Her next victim came with a tidy sum. The employer of this sum was by no means to be mentioned. Her task was an easy one, kill the Elven baron and make it look like someone else did it. Easy. Her job was to do what she was asked in the quickest amount of time and then collect the money. Do the deed, get the money. As luck would have it, he emerged, alone on the moonless night, away from the chattering women in ball gowns and men in stiff suits. Curious, she thought suspiciously.

Melly relaxed her muscles and concentrated. He was just passing the bush where she was hiding when he drew his last breath without uttering an "Oh!" The steel of the dagger found its mark and instantly killed him. No clues were left behind as Melly crept swiftly away over the high courtyard wall and into the darkness.
