I write poetry in English as well as in Hindi/Urdu, which are, for practical purposes, twin languages in India. I have also translated some of my Hindi poems, usually ghazals, into English verse, observing proper rhyme and meter. Writing the same poem in two languages by the same poet, maintaining proper rhyme and meter in both languages, is not common. It is quite a challenge. But, it is fun as well. This genre differs from translation from one language to another done by somebody else other than the author. Such translation can never be appropriate, particularly when it relates to poetry. The poems in either language here have the smooth flow and originality of the poet’s pen. Hope the readers like them. The best judges would be those who can appreciate poetry in both English and Hindi. |
