[Introduction]
A campfire story written by Shelleya and Irisisflower
What happens when two friends get together for a nature walk?
*Leaf2**Leaf2**Leaf2**Leaf2**Leaf2**Leaf2*
ShelleyA    It was a beautiful autumn day and Iris and I decided to walk through a nature trail in a mountain park close to our homes.
We started out late, but we arrived before the park closed. The scenery was beautiful and the changing colors of the leaves
was breathtaking. Indian summer had arrived and it was warm and sunny as we hiked the visitor's trail. It was such a great
day, we lost track of time taking pictures and catching up with each other since we met online.

Irisisflower     Having finally noticed the looming darkness and not wanting to end the day just yet, Shelley and I walked back to where others had gathered to build a great, big bon fire. Shelley smiled and said she would return quickly.

Looking up at the sound of footsteps, I saw Shelley carrying a guitar case and wearing a big smile. "Ok everyone, how about a nice round of Kumbaya?". she asked while unzipping the case and tuning her guitar.

Cheers came from everyone and they jokingly started clearing their throats and tuning up their vocal cords, "ahem, ahem, lalalalala, figaro! figaro! figaro!" that made everyone laugh and feel at ease as Shelley strummed the first chords.

ShelleyA    Kumbaya my Lord, Kumbaya. Kumbaya my Lord, Kumbaya. Kumbaya my Lord Kumbaya, O Lord, Kumbaya... then suddenly there was an echo of a bang and what sounded like a yell. Everyone got quiet. I nudged Iris, "did you hear that?" Everyone began to talk at once. A voice from the crowd asked "Do you think we ought to try to find out what happened?" "It's too dark," another voice replied. "Maybe someone should walk up to the cabin and let the ranger know that there may be a problem." Then suddenly Iris said, "we'll go." I whispered to her, "you've got to be kidding. I've barely got a sense of direction during the day, now it's dark." "Don't worry Shelley, I know how to get there. We'll be all right," as I thought 'from your mouth to God's ear.'

Irisisflower    "You gals better take my number down, you make sure to call me to let us know what you find and if you need help" said one of the other ladies in the group. I quickly dialed it on my cell phone and stored in memory.

Taking out my key chain from my fanny pouch, I quickly turned on my handy mini flash light to show Shelley that I was prepared, only to be met with a frown of worry. Hooking her arm with mine I yelled back "Oh come on now, the ranger's cabin is right up that path. Walking quickly, we rounded the tree trunk at the entrance, when all of a sudden.. BANG! YAAAAAAAAAH!.

"If I hear one more rendition of that blessed song today I......" he turned quickly at the sound of our gasps. In one hand he held a medium sized pot and in the other hand he held a large wooden spoon. " Ummmmm, ladies, good evening...."

ShelleyA    "What do you think you're doing?" I asked the man. "You nearly gave me a heart attack." Iris shook my arm sharply. We were close enough that I could see her expression, and I sensed her telling me, 'stay calm, stay calm.' I took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry that you are upset about our choice of music, but all you had to do was to come to the bon fire and let us know we were singing too loud, or give us a heads up about being sick of hearing that song. We would have sung a different song, maybe Onward Christian Soldiers..." "Shelley!," Iris exclaimed. Okay, okay, "Amazing Grace, then." Iris just stood there shaking her head.

Irisisflower    Both Shelley and I were surprised to be interrupted by the sound of ....laughter! "Oh you ladies are a hoot!" he said while whiping the tears from his eyes. "I do apologize for the start I have given you and the rest of the group, it's just that...."

"Oh the group, gotta call them before they call the cops on us and you!" I said excitedly while dialing the number stored earlier. "False alarm, go on home and call you later"

"I am Frank, the gripe, he said with a grin." " I really do apologize for the scare, just had a bad day I guess and that song was just the straw that broke...well you know"

Shelley and I looked at one another and automatically new what to do. Grabbing one hand each, forming a circle, we prayed.

ShelleyA    "Lord, it's been quite a day, a beautiful one that we shared with old and new friends. We come to You now, and lift up into your care Frank; You know his circumstances and his heart. He is Your child and we ask that you ease his troubles and carry him through it. Let your joy fill his soul and give him peace..."

While Shelley was praying, Iris could hear soft footsteps of the group who quietly approached. She opened her eyes and looked back and saw members of the group reach out and take a friend's hand, bowing their heads and praying along with us under the soft rays of the the full moon. Then as Shelley began to close her prayer, one of the men in the group started to pray, "The Lord is my Shepherd..." and all at once everyone began to pray aloud.

Irisisflower     The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

"And to think that it all started with a song, a pot and a wooden spoon!" said Frank. We all laughed whole heartedly.

ShelleyA    "Yes Frank, it did," I replied. "The sound of that spoon against the pot made it almost sound like a gun shot. Being so close to halloween we were a little worried with so many of us taking part in the bon fire. We were having such a good time and didn't want it to end in trouble." And just think," Iris said. "We didn't have to walk to the park rangers cabin... and we didn't get lost." "Nope we didn't get lost, but I think its time for all of us to head home. It's getting late." Slowly the group began to break up, heading back to the bon fire to make sure the fire was out. "We need to do this again," one of the women called out as she walked down the path. "Yes, we do," Iris and I answered together. I held out my hand and Frank took it, shaking it. Pleased to meet you both, he said as he took Iris' hand and shook it as well...

Irisisflower     "We could easily make this a monthly , or even a yearly gathering, depending on everyone's schedule." I chipped in.

Mumbles of "yeah", "great idea", "sign me up" were heard from all. Everyone exchanged contact information.
"I have the perfect song to start us off in the next meeting", Frank said with a big grin on his face.

Walking away from the cabin and leaving Frank to his nightly duties, Shelley and I simultaniously started humming that very tune.

Once at our vehicles Shelley and I high fived each other, feeling like we had accomplished so much more than just a casual meeting of two aquaintances. "Kumbaya Iris" Shelley smiled as she said.

I winked and with a big grin replied "Kumbaya Shelley my friend."

With that we each drove to our homes, all thankful and joyful for new beginnings.

ShelleyA    This is the end of our campfire story. I hope those of you who have been reading along with us have enjoyed our time together. Signing off. The End!
