Now over here is our general store, the doctors office-" *whispers behind hand* "-between you and me, he can be a little too fancy talkin' for folks like me. But he gets the job done. And over here, is the sheriff's office. Most of them cells are empty. Partly cause crime ain't too bad here, and partly cause our sheriffs gettin' a little old. Hehe. Wiskers
The big man stared him down from across the table. He had hands the size of horseshoes, a lot of facial hair, and smelled a bit like a cow. He was seeming a bit wobbly at the moment as well.

The entire saloon was filled to capacity, it being a Friday afternoon. The pianist was cranking out another annoying tune, the girls were flirting and hitting people who got too close with their fans, and the whiskey and tequila was flowing free.

Speaking of whiskey-

"Another. For me and my friend here." Jack said, returning the mans stare. At least he thought he was staring at him... his eyes were a little glazed though, after all it had been a few shots ago.

The barman did as he was told, filling up the shot glasses that were in front of them.

After the count had hit five, people had started to get a little closer. Bets were being passed around, and although the big man had been the favorite first, things were changing a bit.

Jack downed his first, shaking his head as the burning liquid passed hit throat.

"Woo!" He slammed it upside down on the table. Yep. He was starting to feel it now.

The big man drank his as well with a little difficulty.

"C'mon Jenkins!" Someone cried from the bar.

Jack turned smiling to see who it was. Hank Rodgers, cattle farmer.

"Your boy's slowin' down a bit." Jack said.

"Pft. He's drank more then that before."

Jack just nodded and turned back to the table, drinking another shot that had been filled.

"So have I."

The double doors were pushed open and Mr. Tatum, the doctor walked in. Trailed by his young assistant, a kid named Lynn. Nice boy.

"Now what y'all doing?" Mr. Tatum asked disapprovingly. "I'm dirt tired and don't need to be patchin' someone up or pumpin' them full of coal cause they drank too much." He ordered a coffee from the bar, and just ignored the mans' looks.

"Don't worry doc were-" Jack belched and covered it with a fist "-Were all good." He patted the table, trying to reach Jenkins arm, although there seemed to be at least three on the table.

Jenkins starting laughing hysterically and Jack laughed too.

Jack saw Lynn watching them wide-eyed. He was surprised they could drink all that and not die, probably.

Jack noticed that the glasses were empty.

"C'mon man! Fill her up."

The barman eyed the doctor a little fearfully, then stopped serving him coffee and came back over to the men.

He poured another one.

"I'm gettin' married." Jenkins got out with some difficulty.

Jack swigged the last shot. "Yeah?"

Jenkins, having also drunk it, just wobbled a moment, then fell out of his chair.

The entire saloon began cheering or booing, depending on whom they'd bet money on.

Jack stood, holding on to the chair for support and put on his hat.

"Lucky girl."

He nodded at Lynn as he passed and just "uh huh'd" the doctors curses towards him.

He pushed through the double doors of the saloon sucked in air through his teeth as the cold air hit him.

Jack hiccuped and stepped down, except he missed the step (he'd swear it went right through it if you asked him) and landed face flat in the dust next to his horse.

Coyote, his gold horse, whinnied at him.

"Shut up." Jack just lay there for a moment, enjoying a non-moving surface then stood, reaching out to grab the horses saddle. The horse moved out of the way and he fell again.

"Augh horse!" He got to his feet, unsteady and angry, and dusted himself off. "You get yer hide here right now 'for I-" He hiccuped again "-for I skin you and sell it!"

Coyote just snorted at him.

"I will shoot your sorry-"

Jack stopped as he saw a man and horse entering the town. A stranger. Entering town late at night, from the desert... sheriff would have found him suspicious. But Jack wasn't the sheriff.

As the stranger passed the lantern on the outside of the saloon he just eyed Jack, and kept going. He could have sworn he'd had two different colored eyes... Nah. He'd just been drinking to much. Or exactly enough...

Coyote seemed to have changed his mind and trotted slowly over to him as he stood there, unbalanced.

"Lazy mule. I really should sell you." Jack said as he heaved himself up onto the saddle.

He flicked the reigns and Coyote started down the street.

"Whoa." Jack said, the night sky spinning. "Ride straight you dern fool."

Coyote just snorted again.

They stopped when they reached the sheriff's office and Jack fell off the horse.

"Stupid..." He grunted as he got up. He gave Coyote a sharp smack to the hind quarters as he stumbled into the office.

The deputy jumped up from where he'd been sleeping and aimed his revolver at him. "What-" He stopped, surprised. "-How'd you get out?"

Jack just pushed the gun aside and walked into the open cell, closing the door behind him and collapsing on the bed. "You left the keys on the chair." He said, from underneath his hat that he'd placed over his face.

The deputy was dumbfounded into silence.

"You left the keys on the chair?" The sheriff asked as he walked into the office, and hung his coat up. "Honestly boy. I'm beginning you rethink your position here."

The deputy began to stammer.

The sheriff ignored him and turned to Jack, who didn't notice of course, because his face was covered with his hat.

"And how long you been out?"

"Just a-" Jack hiccuped "-hour or so."

"Not sure this sentence is fulfilled then. Might have to add another night-" He said, smiling.

Jack took the hat off and looked at him. "Aw c'mon. I shouldn't be in here anyways, you know that."

"Well, you had a bounty of twenty dollars for-"

"Yeah I know." Jack said, rolling his eyes. "-For stealin' a horse. You know I didn't steal it. I was breakin' it, which if that crazy old man will remember is what he payed me for."

"You got on the stallion and rode off. You were gone for two days."

"Takes time. 'Sides I brought it back, nice and tame. Can't believe you let this pinhead book me." Jack glanced at the deputy who gave him a dirty look.

The sheriff just smiled and shrugged. "It was his first bounty. Didn't want to spoil it for him."

"Well look, it was one night in here, and its still night." Jack said.

"Yeah, I 'spose so." The sheriff said, then became stern. "But you try another jailbreak again and I'll-"

"Yeah, I know." Jack smiled. "Fine me."

LdyPhoenix    Lynn watched the goings-on with wide eyes and nervous fingers tapping her knee. Every time the wooden doors to the saloon would swing open, her gaze went to the sorry-eyed cowboy who walked in looking for a night of liquor and the smile of a saloon girl. It was a habit she couldn't break, and had long ago given up trying. One day he'd ride back into town and into her life. It was her prayer every night before bed, and every morning she rose. As long as he was still alive, she didn't care.

"You're wastin' time on that fool boy, Lynn." Doctor Tatum took a healthy sip of his coffee, flipping through the pages of his new book shipped in from Boston. "He's got nothing but trouble following his footsteps."

She leaned in closer to the good doctor so her voice was low. "I cannot simply forget him, Doctor Tatum. He is my brother."

The good doctor scoffed, dismissing the subject of many of their conversations. He was ornery and stubborn, but he was a good healer who gave her a chance when no one else would. If it wasn't for the kindness of him and his wife, she would likely be here in the bar for an entirely different reason that unsettled her stomach.

Lynn sighed, gripping the bridge of her nose to find strength. It had been a hard year, but she had survived. That's all she needed to do - survive. Between the work with Dr. Tatum and the small jobs she did out on the local ranches, she brought in enough to keep things balanced between her and the Tatums. They weren't people to expect monies for their generous helping hand, but Lynn did her best to provide food stuffs for the household and small supplies for the doctor when his were getting low. It was the least she could do, especially when Rafael came back . Then the money she had saved would go to him, and she would be starting from scratch once more...

A loud commotion came from upstairs while the music from the piano played on. It sounded like a mirror crashing the floor. Lynn's gaze traveled to the stairs from the top floor of the saloon. While it was true that most of the girls didn't take men beyond the bar, some who were desperate enough did extra work. Dr. Tatum warned them against it, but when one was desperate, you do what you think you have to do. She knew that feeling all too well.

A firm, but gentle hand grasped her upper arm. "This ain't your fight. Dot took him up there knowin' what might happen."

"It does not excuse how that man is treating her." She glared at the stairs, wishing she could have one moment to talk to the man that was hurting her friend. This wasn't right, sitting, doing nothing.

As if he had heard her threat, the door on the second floor burst open and a half-dressed man came out, yelling to the high heavens about the sins of woman and how useless they were. Quietly, she got up from her stool in the corner and walked over to the banister by the stairs.

The girls by the piano began to sing as Lynn remembered the words of her madre gave every time she heard such filth. Her calm voice in times of extreme annoyance had helped her more than once from unfortunate situations where her words could have gotten the best of her. To be a true lady, Madre would say, wiping a spot of blood off her lip with a pristine handkerchief. You must correct the injustices you see without raising a finger to do harm.

She had followed those words most of her life on the rancho, but out here in the Wild West they played by different rules.

As Lynn stood at the bottom of the scarred staircase, her hat tipped low over her eyes, she waited for the cowboy. The man came down stumble-footed, running his mouth about women, when the tip of her boot suddenly stopped his way to getting a drink. Lynn peered in close and got a horrifying whiff of weeks' old body odor. It took everything she had not gag.

"You're a dern fool to be in my way, boy. Scat."

Lynn stepped closer, voice low and raspy like she had practiced. "If you come back here and hurt another girl, I'll make sure you never step in this saloon again."

"And whose gonna stop me?" The big bruiser laughed, his eyes running over her short, scrawny frame.

"Me." With a quick turn of her wrist, Lynn grabbed onto something precious of the cowboy's and twisted. Hard. "Do we understand each other?"

His response was weak and garbled, but as he ran as fast as he could out of the saloon, Lynn got the impression they had an understanding. Cheers and hoots filled the large room at the man's swift exit. She tipped her hat lower to keep everyone from seeing her blush.

Dr. Tatum walked over, slowly shaking his head. "What would your poor mother think?"

"Sometimes the rules of a lady are not suitable for this kind of situation." Lynn did her best not to smile. "I think Madre would understand."

Dr. Tatum sighed, walking up the steps. "Let's get a move on. Ain't got all day."

"Yes, Dr. Tatum." Dutifully, she followed.

But not before she caught the northern wind blowing across the back of her neck, whispering trouble.

`lemur`    (Sorry I took so long! I got pummelled with shifts the past weeks, and I can’t really add much :S )

Levi entered the town on his tall black horse with a happy heart. He had spent nearly a month stealing and looting with various other outlaws, and he was now ready for a good time. Maybe a bit of whiskey and a bit of the smile of some young lady and he'd be set for near two weeks.

As he was riding towards the saloon, he chuckled at a man trying to mount his horse, with varying success. He tipped his hat at the man, then dismounted and tied his horse, Brave, to the hitching post. After scratching him between the ears, he walked towards the double doors, relief washing over him.

"What can I do you for, sir?" the saloon owner asked.

"A room for a few nights, and whiskey. Lots of whiskey." The owner nodded and passed him a glass, a bottle of whiskey, and a key. Levi downed the first glass quickly, he hadn't had anything to drink in months.

"Haven't seen you round here before." Levi turned to see a young girl, scandalously dressed, sitting on the bar stool next to him. She had a charming little smile on her painted red lips, but Levi, contrary to his mood this afternoon, he was too tired for the night.

"You’ll find neither fortune nor fame with me, now depart.” Levi didn’t so much as glance as she pouted and flounced away to another more naive young man.
