Story about two disabled children going to camp.
janice48 Enjoying Nice Weather    Sarah was a girl who was nine years old. She was in a car accident at the age of four and was paralyzed from the waist down. Her parents bought her a service dog to help her get along. Her dogs name was Clara. She was a big black lab with brown spots around her eyes. Just a beautiful dog.

Sarah's mom called Sarah into the kitchen so that she and Sarah's dad could talk to her about going to camp. Dad said,"Honey, mom and I have been talking about camps for disabled children. We thought you would like to go to a camp and have some fun and make some new friends. The one we picked is just wonderful. It's called Camp Courageous. The camp has swimming, horseback riding, caning, just to name a few things to do there. It's only a week camp so you won't be gone from home very long. The camp starts in two weeks. What are your thoughts on going to this camp, Honey?

Sarah began to cry,"But Dad, I don't want to go to camp. I'm really scared. I have never been away from you or mom that long. Everyone will make fun of me and I will miss you and mom. I want to just stay home. Please don't make me go there."

Her dad wiped away the tears on Sarah's face, "Honey we would never force you to do anything you didn't want to do. I know that you're scared and mom and I will miss you too. But I think you'll have a lot of fun at this camp. Clara will be right along side of you so you'll not feel alone. No one is going to laugh at you I think you'll really have a lot of fun at this camp. I just know when you're there you'll make many new friends. Honey, you're a sweet, nice and loving girl, you'll have no problems making new friends. So what do you think Honey, are you willing to at least give it a try? It is up to you. Whatever you decide to do, we'll be fine with it."

"Okay, Dad, I will at least give it a try. But if I don't like it I can always call you to come to pick me up, right?

"Yes Honey, I give you my promise that we'll come and pick you up if you want to come home. Time will just fly by because you'll be having so much fun and you'll be home before you know it."

Finally the day had arrived for Sarah to leave for camp. It was around 7:00 in the morning and all of them were waiting on the front lawn for the bus to arrive. The bus pulled up along side the house and dad helped Sarah and Clara board the bus and put Sarah's wheel chair in the back of the the bus.

"Bye, Sarah. We love you and we'll miss you. Have fun at camp and we'll see you when you get back."

"Okay, Dad and mom, I love you too. Remember, if I call, you said that you would come and pick me if I want to come home, right?"

"Yes Honey, we'll come and get you if you want to come home. Bye, have fun." They all waved goodbye as the bus drove away.

Sarah and Clara were off to camp. As they were sitting on the bus, Sarah said to Clara."Clara I'm so scared. I'm so glad I have you by my side. You're my best friend in the world and I love you." She said as she buried her face in Clara's neck.

Soon they arrived at camp. The bus driver got all of Sarah's things off the bus including her wheel chair. The bus driver opened Sarah's wheel chair and place her into the wheel chair. "Thank you Mr. Bus Driver."

"You're so welcome sweetie, have fun time at camp."

"Thank you. Bye, Mr. Bus Driver."

"Bye,Bye Sweetie."

A counselor named Cindy was there to greet Sarah and Clara. Cindy said,"Hi Sarah, it's so great to have you with us here at camp. I think you're going to have a lot of fun here. I'm your personal counselor while you are with us. My name is Cindy. I'll be right along side you for ever activity that we do or whenever you need my help."

Sarah began to cry. "I'm so scared. I've never been away from my mom and day for a whole week."

Cindy put her arms around Sarah,"Oh Honey, it's okay, you don't have to be scared. I'm right here. You're going to have so much fun here at camp. Now who's this you have brought with you?"

Clara face lit up and began to beam. "This is my dog Clara. She is my best friend in the whole world. She helps me out so much. I love her so much."

Cindy began petting the dog." Hi Clara, I'm so glad you could join us. You're such a pretty dog." Clara's tail start to wag. Let me tell you what you're going to be doing tomorrow as we make our way over to your cabin."

"Okay."

" Tomorrow we'll be going horseback riding."

Sarah started to cry, this very scared look came upon her face."Oh no, I'm scared of horses I have never been on one before.

Cindy bent down and wiped the tears from Sarah's cheeks,"Oh Honey, you'll be just fine. Don't be worried, I'll be right beside you holding onto the horse's reins. All the horses here are very nice horses. They just love children. You're going to have a lot of fun. I'll be right along side you the whole way."

"Okay Cindy."

When they arrived at the cabin Cindy said."Sarah may I help you unpack?"

"Oh yes. please would you?"

"Yes, lets get you settled in. Your roommate has not arrived yet but let me tell you a little about her. Her name is Elizabeth and she also has a disability. She is a very nice girl. I think the two of you are going to get along quit well. She'll be here shortly. Until then, is there anything else I can help you with?"

"No, I'm fine. I'll just sit here with Clara. "You'll keep me company, won't you girl." Nestling her face in Clara's face giving Clara a big kiss.

"I see that Clara will be great company for you. I have to go now and wait for the other bus to arrive. If you need my help just holler and I'll come to help you. Your roommate should be here shortly. "

"Okay, thanks Cindy."

"You are welcome Sarah. See you in a little while."

Grin 'n Bear It!    Clara suddenly sat up, her ears erect and her eyes on the cabin's open door. Sarah thought she heard two girl's voices coming down the path to her cabin. She strained to hear, but she couldn't tell if one of the voices was Cindy's. So I'm finally going to meet my roommate. What if Elizabeth doesn't like me? What if I don't like her? Will mom and dad still come get me if we can't get along? Sarah took a deep breath and tired to smile.

She heard a metallic jingling sound and in the doorway stood the biggest dog she had ever seen. She gasped when the huge dog rushed right up to Clara.

"Clara, be a sweet dog!"

Sarah was afraid for her dear Clara, but the golden dog seemed friendly. She was relieved to see Clara begin to wag her tail slowly as she touched noses with the newcomer. Soon the dogs were saying hello in their special way. That was easy. I hope it goes like that with Elizabeth.

A tall, brunette wearing a yellow vest like Cindy’s came into the room. Her name tag read “Susan.” The girl with her had to be Elizabeth.

Before Sarah could speak, the girl with the dark, curly hair walked up to her and said, “Susan told me your name is Sarah. I’m Elizabeth, but everybody calls me Lizzie.”

Puzzled, Sarah looked at Lizzie and blurted out, “I thought Camp Courageous was only for handicapped kids. Why are you here?” Her face felt hot; she wished she hadn’t said that out loud.

To her surprise, Lizzie just laughed. “It’s okay. Actually, I should say thanks. I think this is the first time anybody thought I was normal.” She put her duffle bag down on the floor, unzipped it and pulled out a bright blue helmet decorated with decals & stickers. Lizzie popped it on her head, and as she fastened the chin strap she said, “Now do I look normal?”

Sarah laughed in spite of herself. “Well, you do look like you’re serious about safety. Do you have to wear it a lot?”

Lizzie drummed her chest and whistled. The huge golden dog rose up on its back feet and rested his front paws on Lizzie’s shoulders. She rubbed the dog’s back as she buried her face in the butter-yellow fur. She peered over his shoulder and told Sarah, “Thanks to Sampson, the best dog in the world by the way, I can actually go days without wearing this. Used to, I could only take it off when I went to bed.” Lizzie eased Sampson’s front paws from her shoulders. “What’s your dog’s name? She is really beautiful.”

"Her name is Clara. I'm glad she and Sampson like each other." Hearing her name, Clara came over to Sarah and put her head in her lap. Sarah stroked her head gently and then looked back to Lizzie. "I was in a car accident when I was 4; that's why I'm in this wheelchair. Why do you have to wear a helmet?"

"I've got really bad seizures and nobody's found any kind of medicine to stop 'em." Lizzie looked at the helmet in her hands. "Once I started walking, I always had to have one of these on my head."

"So you could have a seizure anytime?" Lizzie just nodded, so Sarah asked another question. "If medicine doesn't help, how come you don't still wear it all the time?"

"Cause now I have my golden guardian angel. Don't I Sampson?" The dog bounded over, licked Lizzie's hand, then pressed her body up against Lizzie. "That's the signal. Okay girl, let's head to the bed." Lizzie sat down, kicked off her shoes, then called for Susan.

"What's happening Lizzie."

"Ever seen anyone have a seizure?"

"No!" Sarah anxiously looked around for the counselor.

"Well, you're about to." Lizzie laid back on the bed. "Don't worry. Susan's here. She knows what to do."

janice48 Enjoying Nice Weather    All of a sudden Lizzie's whole body began to shake. Sarah had this scared look on her face, she moved her wheel chair next to Lizzie's bed, and said,"On my gosh, is Lizzie going to be okay?"

Susan relies,"Yes Sarah, Lizzie is going to to just fine. She will come out of it in a few minutes."

Sarah sat by Lizzie's bed anxiously waiting for Lizzie to come out of her seizure.

In a couple of minutes Lizzie stopped shaking and opened her eyes. Susan said to Lizzie,"Just lay there and rest for a while and I'll get your medicine for you."

"Okay Susan, will do."Sarah,"Are you okay? You look whiter than a ghost!" Lizzie started to chuckle.

"Yes, I'm fine. How are you doing? Are you okay Lizzie?

"Yeah, no big deal I'm used to it."

Susan walked back into the cabin and said to Lizzie, "Now I want you to take your medication and just lay there for awhile."

"Okay Susan."

"Susan said."I'm going to go now but if you need anything just holler and I'll come right back to help you."

"Thanks Susan."

Sarah said,"That was very scary watching you shake like that. Does that hurt you?

"No, I really don't know what is going on when I have a seizure. That's why I'm so glad to have Sampson. He has saved my life a couple of times. Haven't you boy? Cuddling her face with Sampson's."

Sarah leaned over and gave Lizzie a big hug and said, "I'm so glad that you are alright Lizzy."

Lizzy hugged her back and said,"Thanks! I just fine. Everyone is scared the first time they see me have a seizure. So the next time you'll not be scared because you've already seen me have a seizure."

"I'll try not to be Lizzie. Can I ask you another question?

"Sure."

" Are you scared to be here like I'm?"

"I was until I meet you. I think you're a very nice girl." The girls both began to laugh.

"I like you too. I'm so glad we are roommates. I have a lot of fun with you Lizzie."

"Me too."

Sarah says to Lizzie," Tomorrow we go horseback riding I'm really scared of horses. But at least I'll have Cindy to help me. What do you think about going horseback riding, Lizzie?"

"I'm looking forward to it. It should be a lot of fun."

"Your not scared at all?"

"Nah, piece of cake."

The girls stayed up half the night and chatted and got to know each other. Soon it was morning and both Cindy and Susan walked in the door.

"Okay girls, time to get up for breakfast and go horseback riding."

Both the girls said,"Okay we are up." Both rubbing their eye's and yawning from being up so late from the night before because of all the gabbing they did.

Sarah says to Cindy,"I'm going to need some help getting dressed could you please help me with that?"

"Of course, that is what I'm here for. Let me help you out of bed and get you ready."

"Thanks Cindy."

Soon both the girls were off to breakfast. They gabbed, giggled and laughed all the way through the breakfast. Cindy said to the girls,"Now girls, you must start eating and stop gabbing or we'll be late for horseback riding.

Both girls replied,"Okay Cindy, we'll hurry up." As they both looked at each other and started to giggle.

Finally both girls were finished with breakfast. Cindy said,"Let's make our way down to the stables. I will push you Sarah if that is alright with you?

"No, that is fine I'll do it myself."

"Okay Sarah that's great."

Sarah said," Come on girl we are going to the stables to meet the horses. Just follow Cindy, girl."

The whole time making their way down to the stables, Sarah and Lizzie were just gabbing and giggling along the away. The counselors Cindy and Susan just smiled at each other because they know the two girl were building a special bond between each other.

They finally arrived at the stables. Susan said,"We'll be right back girls we have to go and get your horses for the both of you. The counselors brought out two beautiful horses. One was pure black and his coat just shined as the sun hit the coat of the horse. The other horse was a brown horse with white spots around the eyes. Susan said,"Okay girls, its time to get on the horses."

"Sarah said,"I want the black horse. She's so beautiful. Oh please can I have her?" Is that okay with you Lizzie?"

"Sure, I don't mind."

"Oh goody I get the black horse. Thank you Lizzie. You"re such a good friend."

"You are welcome Sarah." Both the girls looked at each other and just started to giggle.

Clara and Sampson started barking at the horses.

Both girls said,"Shh, you'll scare the horses. Be quite now."

Cindy said,"Okay Sarah, you're the first one to be put on the horse. We have a special saddle for you. Here let me get you on the horse."

"Okay Cindy."

Clara got this frightened look on her face as Sarah was mounted on the horse. She started to bark at Sampson. Clara said to Sampson,"Oh no, my poor Sarah, she is going to get hurt." Clara put her paws over her eyes like she didn't want to see what was going to happen next.

Grin 'n Bear It!    “Stop that! You’re embarrassing me.” Sampson prodded Clara’s muzzle with his immense paw. “Have some faith in your girl, why don’t you?”

“My girl shouldn’t be on that…. that quota hearse.” Clara rolled onto her side, her back to the golden dog towering over her.

“A quota what?”

“That sweaty brute she’s sitting on.”

“Quota?” Sampson stopped to scratch behind one of his silky ears. “Oh, you mean Quarter horse.”

“That’s what I said.” Clara waited until Sampson stopped scratching before she continued. “Do you think it killed that cow?”

“What cow?” Sampson sat back on his haunches to his full height as he looked around. “I don’t see no stinking cow.”

“Of course you don’t. They’re all dead.”

Sampson cut his eyes at Clara. “Just which branch of service are you in?”

“What does that have to do with quota hearses and bovines?”

Sampson got up and circled behind Clara so his muzzle hovered directly above Clara’s left ear. “Just answer the question.”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Clara pulled herself up to sit at attention, her muzzle tilted slightly up. “I’m Companion, First Class, and an honor graduate of the Serve and Obey Class of 2005.”

“What about search and rescue certification?”

“Heavens, no.” Clara swiveled her head from side to side, checking to see where the other service dogs were posted. “This is a secret. You’ve got to promise not to tell the camp’s canine corps.”

“I don’t want your secret. That’s why it’s called a secret.”

“As long as we’re partners, CE 267 dash 5822 requires I inform you of anything that might compromise our mission.”

“If you have to, you have to. Go ahead, Miss ‘By the Book.’ ”

“I’m afraid of water. Well, not water in my bowl or water from a hose. Wide, deep water. A creek, that’s okay, but a river.” She shuddered.

“You’re kidding?” Sampson stood frozen in place, his head cocked, a thread of drool escaping from the corner of his mouth. Finally, he shook his head, the spit just missing Clara's nose, and said, “But…but you’re a Labrador Retriever. Why, that’s impossible.”

“Not impossible; unfortunate, yes.” Clara plopped down on the ground, her head between her front legs, and sighed loudly.

“And you still made First Class? You got family on the board or what?”

“I have a restricted license. A wheelchair-bound master and big water usually don’t mix.” She looked up at Sampson, a pleading look in her eyes.

“They’re going swimming tomorrow. Sarah’s depending on me. I can’t fail her.” She couldn’t keep the whimper out of her voice. “What am I going to
do?”

janice48 Enjoying Nice Weather    "You need to stand by your girl. And just buck-up. You're a First Class Champion, aren't you?"

Clara hung her head in shame and said,"Yes I'm. I'll just have to be strong for my Sarah and get over my fear of water is all. I don't want to let my Sarah down."

"Now you are talking like a First Class Champion."

All of a sudden one of the counselors, said to the dog."Clara, Sampson, shh you two are scaring the horse. Now stop that barking right now."

Clara and Sampson just looked at each other and both began to whine a little bit. But they quit talking to each other they didn't want to scare the horse because they wanted to protect their girls.

Sarah was on her horse she said to Lizzie,"This is so much fun. Get on your horse Lizzie. You were right, this is a piece of cake."

Lizzie got this funny look on her face and just stood there. Like she was frozen.

Susan said to Lizzy,"Are you okay Lizzy?"

"I don't want to get on the horse."

Sarah said,"Come on Lizzie, you told me it was a piece of cake and that you were looking forward to this. What is wrong Lizzie?"

"I'm scared to get on that horse. What if it bucks me off?"

Sarah said,"It's not going to buck you off. It is fun being on a horse. Look at me, I was scared last night but you told me everything would be fine. And it is. Please Lizzy will you get on your horse and ride with me?"

"Okay, I'll give it a try."

Susan helped Lizzie onto the horse. In no time the two girls were giggling and laughing. They were having so much fun on the horses.

Two hours had gone by when Cindy said,"Okay girls, time to get off the horses."

Both girls started to whine and said,"Oh but we want to still ride the horses. We're having so much fun. Can't we just ride for a little longer?"

Cindy replied,"I know girls, but we need to give the horse a break and feed them, they are hungry."

"Oh okay, we'll get off the horses."

Cindy help Sarah off the horse and put her in her wheelchair. Susan helped Lizzie off her horse.

Lizzie went over to Sarah and gave here a big hug and said."Thanks for being there for my pal. You're right that was a lot of fun. I'm so glad that you were here with me, Sarah. It you weren't I probably wouldn't have gotten on that horse. You are such a good friend."

Sarah face started to beam and got this big grin on her face and said, "No problem. What are best friends for?"

They both began to giggle.

After a few minutes the counselors came back out. Susan said,"Okay girls lets go and get some lunch."

Sarah and Lizzie both at the same time said,"I'm hungry."

As they were making their way down to the cafeteria, Lizzy said to Sarah,"That was really a lot of fun. I wonder if my parents would buy me a horse?"

Sarah started laughing. "Yeah right Lizzy, your mom and dad will just go out and by you a horse." Lizzy began to laugh right along with Sarah. It was really fun riding those horses. I just loved mine. She was just beautiful. I hope we get to do this again before we leave."

"Me too."

Soon they were at the cafeteria and began eating their lunch. They just kept talking about their horseback riding experience and how much fun they had. Susan and Cindy came over to their table. Cindy said,"How did you like horseback riding girls?"

Both girls replied at once,"It was so much fun." Then Lizzy say,"Jinks." Sarah just gave Lizzy a big smile.

Sarah asked Cindy,"Can we do that again?"

"Well, we'll have to see. There are so many activities here to do. I'll see if we can squeeze it in."

"Oh goody, I hope we can do that again. It was so much fun. Thanks Cindy."

Cindy and Susan just started to chuckle because the girls were so enthusiastic about horseback riding.

Susan says to Cindy,"They are becoming best of friends. Isn't that great?" I had a feeling they would form a special bond between the two of them."

" It is just wonderful how they interact with each other. Its a great thing to see. That is why I love my job so much. It gives me such pleasure and joy when I see two children bond like those two. Don't you agree Susan?

"Oh yes, definitely."

Sarah says to Lizzy, You know we go swimming tomorrow, I wonder how that will be? I hope it's as fun as horseback riding. Don't you Lizzy?

"Oh yes, I hope so."

"But, I'm kind of worried about Clara. She don't like being in the water at all. I wonder how she will react tomorrow when we go swimming."

"She's be just fine. Sampson will be right along side her. Sampson will help her get through it. They have become best of friends like we are."

"I know, it's it great how they are best of friends just like we are?"

"Oh yes, I think that is just great."

Grin 'n Bear It!
After lunch the girls went back to their cabin. They hadn’t been there too long before they heard Cindy call out, “Hey girls, I’m coming in.” Cindy smiled at the girls and said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen any campers take to horseback riding like you two did.”

“We didn’t want to stop, did we Lizzie?” said Sarah.

“I wasn’t sure I’d like it. Those horses were really big. I still kinda worry about falling and hitting my head, but Sarah was having so much fun, I had to try it.”

“That’s what Camp Courageous is all about Lizzie. Trying things you never thought you could.” Cindy turned to Sarah. “Let me help you with your shower now before we go out again.”

“It does smell like horses in here, doesn’t it?” Sarah wheeled herself toward her special closet unit where Cindy had placed all her camp clothes when she unpacked Sarah’s suitcase. “I’ll get some clean clothes and meet you in the shower.”

For a few seconds, Cindy stood with a smile on her face as she watched Sarah selecting a new outfit then she turned to leave for the shower room adjoining the girls’ suite.

A minute later, Sarah wheeled herself into the room, still smiling from the morning’s ride. She positioned her chair at the changing bench, locked the wheels, and placed her clothes in the recessed area to the right of the bench. “This time I think I’m going to see if I can do the transfer all by myself.”

“Great. I’ll be here ready to help you if you need it.” Cindy watched, poised on tiptoes, as Sarah slowly, but successfully used the handholds to pull herself onto the bench.

“I did it!” Sarah beamed with pride. “Would you please take my shoes off, but don’t help me with the rest of my clothes until I ask you to, okay Cindy?”

“Whatever you say. I’ll get the shower going.”

When she was ready to transfer into the shower, she heard Cindy gasp. “What is it?”

“Nothing major Sarah, but once you’re dressed, I want the camp’s nurse to check you out. Looks like we let you stay in the saddle too long.”

“You mean these red places won’t just go away in a few hours?”

“Maybe they will, but you know we can’t take any chances.”

Sarah began to cry. “I was having so much fun. I don’t want to go home.”

“Sarah, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to leave camp,” Cindy said as she tested the temperature of the water, “but I don’t think you should plan on going swimming tomorrow.” She helped Sarah, now sobbing, into the shower. “It may not be such a big deal. Let’s wait to see what the nurse says. If she thinks it’s serious enough, she’ll ask the doctor to examine you. She’s the one who’s responsible for that kind of decision.” She washed Sarah’s back, and gradually the girl’s sobs subsided. “Hang in there. I don’t think you’ll be leaving us any time soon. Call me when you need me, okay?” Seeing Sarah dip her head slightly, Cindy stepped back and closed the curtain.

Lizzie, her black curls still damp from her shower, was whistling happier as she tossed Sampson’s favorite toy across the room for him to chase. When she looked up to see Sarah, her happy expression changed to alarm. “What’s the matter Sarah?”

“Cindy has to take me to the nurse to be checked out. I’ve got a bad case of saddle sores.”

“Jeez! Do they hurt?”

“You forget, I can’t feel anything from my waist down. I didn’t know there was anything wrong until I got undressed.”

“So what’s going to happen?”

“Cindy says I probably won’t get to go swimming tomorrow, but she doesn’t think I’ll have to go home.” Sarah wiped tears from her eyes. “I hope she’s right about that.”

“If you can’t go swimming, I’m not going swimming either. We’re a team, right?”

Sarah smiled slightly, “Yeah, Lizzie, we’re a team, but I don’t want to spoil your fun. You go ahead and go swimming; Clara and I will probably go to the crafts hall.” Clara looked at Sarah, barked once, and began wagging her tail.

“I’m going to let the dogs out in their run. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind having a short nap.” Lizzie walked over to the Dutch door in the cabin’s back wall. She drew back the bar from the bottom half, pushed it open, and whistled for the dogs. Sampson, followed closely by Clara, eagerly ran past her and out into their private dog run.

“Looks like it’s your lucky day, Clara.” Sampson called out as he ran as fast as he could to the back fence.

As soon as Clara caught up with him, she said, “I can’t be happy with Sarah feeling so sad.”

“It’ll be just a temporary setback for her and your secret will be safe from the corps.” Sampson grabbed up a big stick in his mouth and began teasing Clara with it. “Now let’s have some fun.”

Lizzie woke up from her nap, sat up and looked over at Sarah. “Sarah,” She whispered.

“I’m awake.”

“When are you going to see the nurse?”

“Already have. You slept through it all.”

“What did she say?”

“Cindy was right. No swimming for me. Nurse Kathy gave me some ointment I have to apply 4 times a day.” Sarah shrugged. “At least I don’t have to go home.”

“So what are we going to do tomorrow?”

“You’re going swimming. I think I’m going to archery.”

“But I thought we were going to stick together.”

“I don’t like it anymore than you do, but it’s just one morning.” Sarah checked her watch. “The afternoon activity bell is about to ring. We’d better get ready.”

The girls and their ever present dogs enjoyed the afternoon crafts activity together. At the end of the day, all the campers made ‘smores and sang as they sat around several campfires. Sarah was disappointed she wouldn’t be going swimming the next day, but as she looked around at all the smiling faces she had come to know, she couldn’t help hugging herself with delight. She didn’t think she had ever had this much fun.

At lights out, Sarah and Lizzie’s usual chatter was punctuated by long yawns and within a few minutes, both of the girls were asleep.

The next morning, Sarah was awakened by Lizzie’s moaning. “Lizzie, what’s the matter? You want me to call Susan.”

“Don’t call her. I’m okay.” Lizzie moaned again as she straightened up next to her bed. She began to shuffle awkwardly across the room, moaning softly with every other step, as she made her way toward the bathroom. “I’m so sore I can hardly move. I don’t think I’ll be going swimming today either.” When she came out of the bathroom a few minutes later, her pajama bottoms weren’t completely pulled up. “I don’t think I’ll be able to pick up a bow, much less an arrow. I hurt all over.”

janice48 Enjoying Nice Weather    Sarah said to Lizzie, you must have saddle burn too. I think we need to call Susan so she can take you down to the nurse to get some ointment to put on those sores. "Susan,' yelled Sarah. Susan walked into the room. "Yes, what is it Sarah?"

"I think you better take a look a Lizzie, she is in a lot of pain. I think she has saddle burn like me."

"Lizzy may I see where you are hurting?"

Lizzy pulled her pajama bottoms down and sure enough she too had saddle burn.

"Susan said,"We better get you to the nurse to get some ointment for those sores. It will make you feel much better. I don't think either of you should be doing archery today either."

"Okay Susan, lets go to the nurse's office, I guess. See you soon Sarah."

"Lizzie. You'll be okay once you get that ointment on.. See you in a little while."

Soon Lizzie was back from the nurse office and Susan applied the ointment to her sore spots. "Lizzy said,"Boy I feel better already." Sarah just laughed. Sarah said,"To think we would both get it at the same time is really weird." Sarah and Lizzy just started to laugh. Sarah said,"I think I want to do art and crafts again today. How doe's that sound Lizzy, is that okay with you?"

"That sounds good to me Sarah. I love doing arts and crafts and I just know what we can make."

"You do?"

"Yep."

"Oh please tell me Lizzy."

"Oh alright Sarah, I was thinking we could make friendship bracelets. So when we go home we'll still be together."

Sarah's face just beamed with delight. "You are my best friend Lizzy, I really like you. That is a great idea."

Cindy and Susan walked in and said,"Girls have you decided what you would like to do today?"

Lizzy said,"Oh yes, we would like to do arts and crafts today."

"Arts and crafts it is then."

So they girls went off to do arts and crafts together. There were so many different beads and crystals that they could choose from, they both had a hard time choosing. Finally, after awhile both girls were finished making their friendship bracelets for each other. Lizzy said to Sarah,"Here let me place my bracelet on your wrist. Now, Sarah, I place this on your wist so we'll be best friends forever no matter how far we're apart from each other, if you get lonely all you have to do you have to do is look at your bracelet I'll be right along side of."

Sarah got a tear in her eyes as Lizzy placed the bracelet on her wrist. Oh Lizzy, it is just beautiful. No one has ever give me a friendship bracelet before. I just love it. I'll think about you every time I look at it. Here let me place my bracelet on you."

"Okay," Yours is beautiful also Sarah. I will forever cherish it. Now we will be best friends forever."

They give each other a big hugs.

Sarah said," Now we are kind of like blood sisters." The girls just giggled.

Grin 'n Bear It!    Clara yipped her approval, then turned to Sampson. “Looks like we’re going to be seeing each other after camp’s over.”

“Oh, joy.” Sampson rolled his eyes, then plopped down on the pine floor, lifted his back left leg high in the air and began licking himself.

“For a Golden Retriever, you certainly aren’t warm and fuzzy.”

Sampson finished before answering. “You and me, our relationship is professional.” He looked back at the girls sorting through the arts supplies and helping clean up. “They are kinda of cute together, aren’t they?" Sampson sat up. "I do love my girl. Except for the Pibb, my family is great.”

“They make you drink soda?”

“No, the Pibb is Lizzie’s little brother, Eric. He’s a ‘Pain in the Butt Brat.’ Pulls my tail and hides my ball among other things.”

“Why doesn’t Lizzie make him stop?”

“I bet Sarah is an only child. Am I right Clara?”

“Why, yes. How’d you know?”

“Simple. If your girl had brothers and sisters, you would never have asked such a dumb question.”

“Lizzie doesn’t want to stop Eric?”

“No, Clara. Lizzie can’t stop him. Plus the little monster is smart enough to do it when no one’s looking.”

“That’s no way for a Companion, First Class to be treated!”

“Oh, don’t start whining on my account. I can’t tell you how many times the little Pibb has stepped in a few surprises I’ve left just for him.”

“You didn’t? We aren’t supposed to be bad dogs.”

“I didn’t say the surprises were in the house, Clara.” Sampson began sniffing the air. “I smell lunch. Is that chicken?”

Clara inhaled deeply. “Roasted chicken. My favorite. I’ll see if I can hurry our girls up.”

janice48 Enjoying Nice Weather    Clara went over to Sarah and started to nudge her. Sarah said,"What is it girl? Oh, I know, you smell the chicken. Don't you girl? Chicken is your favorite. Okay, we'll here up so we can eat lunch.

Clara barked back in delight.

Clara went over to Sampson and said, "Sarah said they were going to hurry up so we can have some of the delicious chicken. I'm so hungry."

"Me too. I can hardly wait to eat."

"Lizzy, we need to clean-up so we can eat lunch. Clara is getting very hungry."

"Yeah, so is Sampson. He loves chicken also. So we better hurry up before they start barking at us."

The girls and the dogs made their way down to the cafeteria. Both Clara and Sampson were all over Sarah and Lizzy. They were so excited about eating some chicken. Clara and Lizzy said,"Down, or you won't get any chicken."

While they were eating,Sarah got this very sad look on her face. Lizzy said,"What's wrong Sarah? Don't you like chicken?"

"No it's not that."

"Then what is it buddy?"

"I' very sad because this is our last night to spend together. I don't want to go home now that I have made a best friend. You have taught me to become more independent. I realized that I don't need a lot of help for someone anymore. I can do thing just fine on my own. I'm going to keep this up when I get home. And it's is all because of you Lizzy. I'm going to really miss you a a lot. I love you Lizzy." Lizzy came over and started to hug Sarah.

"I'm going to miss you to Sarah and I love you too. Remember what I told you about the friendship bracelets. That no matter were we are, all we have to do is look down at them and we'll be together again."

Grin 'n Bear It!    Sarah smiled as she looked down at her bracelet. “Even without this, I won’t ever forget you or this camp.” She looked up at Lizzie and said, “Mom and dad are coming tomorrow to pick me up. I can’t wait for you to meet them.”

“I hope they like me.”

“Oh, they already do. I’ve told them all about you. And I’ve asked if you could come visit.” Clara barked at Sarah and wagged her tail. “And Sampson, too, of course.”

“I asked my mom about your coming to visit too.” Lizzie looked down at her hands and began twisted the bracelet round her thin wrist. “She wants to meet you, but… but you can’t get into our house with a wheelchair. I’m really sorry.”

“Lizzie, you don’t need to apologize. It’s not your fault.” She patted Lizzie on the back. “That’s not going to keep us from seeing each other.”

“I know, but I was really looking forward to having you come stay with me.”

Cindy interrupted them. “Girls, you need to get ready for this afternoon’s activity.”

“We’re ready Cindy. Can you tell us what’s going to happen tonight? Do we need to do anything special?”

“I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you two. When you come back to the cabin after activity, I’ll have everything ready.”

“Cindy, won’t you tell us anything now?”

“I could, but I’m not. Tonight’s ceremony is the highlight of Camp Courageous; that’s all you two need to know.”
