Humans Out, Anthros In
Humans have disappeared. Animals are taking over.

[Introduction] Humans have vanished into thin air. At the same time, certain animals (I'll get into that in a minute) have gained human intelligence and speech. Over time, these animals gain other human characteristics like walking on two legs and opposable thumbs. The changes eventually stop and they will be anthros. Groups can be divided by species and diet or they can be mixed.

The campfire concentrates on two former pets that had the same master. One is a male Siamese cat named Sunlight and the other is a female white mouse named Snowfall. They are trying to find out why the humans have disappeared and why they have changed. All I can say is that they find out.

A few rules:
1. The animals that changed once belonged to humans, be they as pets, as future food, or for entertainment purposes. So no anthro wolves or raccoons unless they were exotic pets or kept in a zoo.
2. The animals also had vertebrates, so no anthro insects or worms.
3. Animal to anthro transformations are not instantaneous. They can last from half a day to a week.
4. Anthros are human sized. However, they are still proportional to the animals they once were. In other words, mice and rats are still smaller than cats and dogs.
5. While others can their group, Sunshine and Snowfall are the main focus of this story.

Other than that, have fun.
EHH    It was feeding time for Sunshine and Snowfall. The mouse was in her plastic cage with water bottle and exercise wheel and the cat was sitting right next to her on the table. Sunshine was the kind of cat who liked company. Snowfall had not been outside the house much but wanted to see the outside world more. They had gotten used to each other by this time.

As their owner Francis was preparing their meals, the two pets just happened to look at each other. As they did, they had a sudden sensation come over them. The cat and mouse stared at each other and knew something had changed between

Their focus was broken by sound of things hitting the floor. Where Francis used to be, now there was a spilled can of cat food. Outside, there were the sounds of driver-less cars crashing. As Sunshine hopped onto the floor, he knew something was wrong. He would have heard Francis leave the room. As he looked around for any trace of the human, he said his first word: "Master?"

Twiga    Sunlight was in a panic, something was wrong, very wrong, he started running all about the house yelling "Master? Master?!"

Suddenly he heard a soft feminine voice saying "Help...Me..."

EHH    Sunshine went back into the kitchen. He saw Snowfall was still in her cage. "Get me out of this. I think I'm getting bigger." She had hardly grown 1 or 2 inches. Still, better safe than sorry. Sunshine had a hard time lifting the lid off. It was times like this he wished he had thumbs. He finally got it off and he tipped the cage over so that Snowfall could get out.

"Did you find our master?", she asked.

"No, I can't find him anywhere.", he said, "It's like he disappeared without a trac--" He stopped and realized something.

"What's the matter?", she asked.

"We are talking.", he said. It finally sank in for the two. "How is this happening?"

Twiga    "I don't know..." Snowfall said

Suddenly the two of them was distracted, by the sounds of two other Creatures! They looked out the window and saw two of the Next door neighbor's dogs, a male Old English Sheepdog and female Doberman searching and calling for their Master!

EHH    "We are not the only ones.", said Sunshine. "I'm going outside. Snowfall, stay here." He used the pet door and saw the true extent of what had happened. The street had a few crashed cars. In the distance, there was smoke. There was not a single human in sight. No sirens to respond to the disaster that was happening all around him. Only other pets were in the yard. "Hey, cat!", a tough female voice asked. The doberman and sheepdog had finally noticed Sunshine. "Yes?", he asked. "It seems he can talk like us, Snapper.", the sheepdog said to the doberman. "Indeed, Ringo.", Snapper said back.

A while later at sundown, Snowfall saw Sunshine come back into the house. "Well?", she asked. "As far as I can tell," Sunshine said, "humans have just disappeared and other pets have our powers. I talked to the two dogs and while the doberman has a bias against felines, they agreed we should head out and find what has happened." Snowfall asked, "You mean leave our home?" Almost on cue, the power went out. Sunshine said, "We can't go back to the way things were. The world has changed. WE have changed. I'm sorry, but that's the truth." Snowfall hugged him. She said, "No, you are right. I'm just scared." Sunshine said, "So am I."

Sunshine had the spilled cat food and Snowfall was lucky that she could climb a broom to get to the pantry food. Later, Snowfall snuggled up to Sunshine as both were going to sleep for the night. "No matter what, I will protect you", said the cat. "And I will do the same", replied the mouse. Sunshine couldn't help but smile at that. The two truly were looking out for one another.

The next morning...

Twiga    The Animal in the nearby zoo were breaking out of the cages, the Monkeys and Apes were of course the biggest help since at this point in time they were the only ones with opposable thumbs, But the elephant's great strength and flexible trunks came in handy as well.

Because Sunshine and Snowfall lived close to the City Zoo they were among the first to see, Elephants, apes, monkeys, big cats, wolves, bears and rhinos and hippos wandering the streets looking for food

"I'm afraid." Snowfall said "I've never seen such creatures!"

"Neither have I." Sunshine said "But they might be helpful, the biggest ones seem to only eat plants."

EHH    Also, they couldn't help but notice that they got a little bigger while they were sleeping.

Twiga    Snapper and Ringo also noticed the escaped zoo animals, however they were so amazed by the vast array of creatures walking around their neighborhood that they didn't notice the changes to their own bodies!

EHH    The dogs walked up to Sunshine and Snowfall. "Amusing sight. Isn't it, cat?", Snapper asked. Sunshine rolled his eyes and turned to looked at her. "I told you. My name is Sunshi--" He stopped and had a look of shock when he saw both of the dogs. Snowfall saw them too. "Is there a problem?", Ringo asked. All Sunshine said was, "Look at your front paws." The dogs did and to their shock, their forelegs had turned into humanoid arms and their paws now had stretched out digits that resembled fingers. All that was missing was thumbs.

Twiga    Meanwhile an female elephant named Gita felt something funny underneath her front leg, she looked down, her front...hoof now resembled a hand with three stubby fingers and nails that resembled what an elephant's toes!

"Mom!" Said her daughter, little one year old Sunny "What's happening to us?!"

"I don't know." Gita said she stood up on her back legs to examine her front limbs more

EHH    The four pets were watching this. "Does this mean we are changing into humans?", Ringo asked.

Twiga    The four pets were watching the zoo animals, when a large Anaconda spied them from a tree

'These four will make good snacks.' The Snake thought to himself

He was about to strike when a voice cut in the made all the animals stop and listen

"Stop." The Voice said

EHH    The Voice made a speech that all the intelligent animals heard in their heads. "For all of those who can hear me around the world, I have come to tell you this: Every human in the world is gone. You were kept by them and now you are here to replace your former masters. The transformations you are all going through will not make you completely human. While you will gain some of their features, you will still have much of your animalistic heritage. Only those who have lived in the wild are going to remain unchanged. What has been done can't be reversed. You are now the dominant force of the planet." After saying all of that, the voice was gone. There were so many questions. Who was that voice? How could it be heard from all over the world and know what was happening? Why were all these changes happening in the first place?

As the four pets contemplated these questions, one of the things that came to their minds and devastated them was that they would never see their masters again. One of them even started to cry...

Twiga    It was Snowfall who was crying

"What did the humans do that warranted this?" She sobbed

Gita the Elephant picked up a long stick to scratch herself with and mumbled "I guess house pets can find good things to say about humans, I personally could live without them."

EHH    Ignoring the slowly shrinking pachyderm (elephant, hippo, and rhino anthros would be 7-9 feet tall), Sunshine comforted the crying mouse. "Don't Worry", he said, "We will find out who did this and why, then we can get on with our lives."

They traveled to the nearest shopping center to get some food and supplies. Hopefully, they hadn't been emptied out yet. Inspired by their new front limbs (which remained thumbless for the time being), Ringo and Snapper had tried to walk on two legs but their bodies weren't quite there yet so they just kept falling over. This made Snowfall (who was riding on Sunshine's back) chuckle and in turn made Sunshine feel good that Snowfall had something to smile at.

They reached the shopping center which consisted of a grocery store, a book store, a clothing store, and a pet store.

Twiga    They were confronted by many smells, dry and wet pet food, fresh meat and fish, raw vegetables and fruits, milk and dairy products and of course processed junk food.

The animals were silent, they were like little kids in a candy store! Which should they try first?

EHH    Before they could make their next move... "Company!", a voice squawked. The four pets looked around and saw an African Gray Parrot landing near them. "How do you do? My name is Jimmy. I'm from the pet store.", the parrot said. Snowfall asked, "Is there anyone else at the store?"

Twiga    "Mostly some mice and rats, small birds." Jimmy said "I wasn't for sale I was owned by the shopkeeper."

EHH    Jimmy continued, "She taught me how to talk. Actually, it was more like repeating phrases. Yesterday, I finally understood what the words actually meant but when I turned my head to see her, she was already gone. I was going to have a real conversation with her. Now I will never get that chance."

Sunshine had a feeling that they were going to keep hearing this story from other pets in the future. He decided to change the subject. "Jimmy, are all those other animals still at the store?", he asked.

Twiga    "Yes." Jimmy said "I tried to get them out but I wasn't able to."

"Well what are we waiting for?" Sunshine said
