[Introduction] This campfire is written by my dear dear friend, MirandaBaby and me! MirandaBaby is the very first person I ever wrote with on Stories. We wrote in an Interactive Story called Sam and Josie about 1000 years or so ago.

The premise of this campfire is that Sam and Josie meet under different circumstances. This time Josie has returned to college for her Masters and is assigned to South Glen South as his teaching assistant.

Sam is still teaching English, but in this story he has been living with his girlfriend, Lara, for a year.

Hooves of Fire!    Sam Coulson sat at his desk, watching proudly as his new Teaching Assistant, Josie Geller, took over the class. Obviously, a little nervous at first, she stumbled but quickly became so caught up in Shakespeare's As You Like it, that she forgot her nervousness and really began to teach.

Watching her intently, Sam's thoughts drifted as he watched her move in that clingy blue dress, that seemed to enhance every voluptuous curve he'd already noticed in the two weeks she'd been observing his class. He swallowed, then winced, trying his best to harness those thoughts and desires he'd felt towards his lovely blonde assistant almost from the first moment.

To complicate matters, he'd been living with his longtime girlfriend, Lara, for almost a year when Josie walked into his classroom that warm March day. But the relationship with Lara had been strained, almost since the beginning.

Falling in love with Josie was the last thing he'd ever expected, but Sam Coulson was gradually realizing Josie was the one he wanted, not Lara.

MirandaBaby    Josie glanced hesitantly towards Sam as she rose to begin teaching the class for the first time. Sam nodded his encouragement, and sent her one of his incredible crooked grins that always made her tummy flutter. Taking a deep breath, throwing her shoulders back and titling her chin she stepped to the blackboard and proceeded with her lesson plan. With Sam’s support, Josie knew she could do anything. She smiled gratefully at Sam as she began to speak. She could feel Sam’s appreciative eyes on her while she taught. Josie felt so thankful to have a teacher as wonderful as Sam as her mentor. She didn’t dare wish for anything else. Even though she felt it the minute she met him, over the few weeks they had spent together, Josie realized deep in her heart that Sam was her soulmate. The one she was meant to be with. Sure, he was handsome. But her attraction to him went far beyond his gorgeous green eyes, his messy little-boy hair, his sexy smile, or his wonderfully broad shoulders. Josie loved his intelligence, his sense of humor, and his confidence. He was perfect. And he had a perfect girlfriend. Josie didn’t stand a chance. In her mind, that is.

Hooves of Fire!    Sam watched in awe, as Josie gained her confidence teaching his class. He could tell she was a little nervous at first, but he fought back the urge to step in and help.

By the time the class was over, she was smiling at him, beaming really. He felt the warmth of her smile all the way through him and he couldn't stop himself from walking up and giving her a hug as soon as the class had left the room.

But once he held her in his arms, he couldn't quite release her. What had begun as a spontaneous gesture quickly turned into more than he had bargained for.

"That was great," he said hoarsely, whispering in her ear.

Josie flushed with pleasure. "Thanks. It just feels, I mean it felt right," she corrected, shivering as his lips accidentally brushed her ear lobe.

And still they lingered in each other's arms, when suddenly Sam's cell phone rang, jarring both of them..

MirandaBaby    The sound of his cell phone ringing snapped Sam back to attention. He smiled sheepishly at Josie as he reluctantly stepped away. ‘What am I doing?’ Sam thought to himself. “Sorry, Josie. Excuse me.” Sam apologized before reaching for his phone. “Hello? Hi Lara. How was your day?” Sam said softly, smiling at Josie as he turned away to speak privately.

Josie was thankful that Sam had turned around, certain that her face was flushed with embarrassment. She briefly brought her hand to her heart and could feel it pounding away in her chest. Josie silently berated herself for holding onto Sam’s hug for so long. She just couldn’t help herself, though. The excitement of leading her first class, coupled with Sam’s intoxicating cologne, sent her reeling into another world…one where she belonged in Sam’s arms. It had felt so right. So perfect. Coming back to reality, Josie could hear Sam and Lara discussing their evening plans. ‘She’s so lucky.’ Josie thought wistfully to herself. ‘At least we’re friends.’ Josie glanced fondly at Sam before busying herself packing up her materials.

“Okay, Lara. I can’t wait to hear your big news. I’ll be home in about half an hour.” Sam said enthusiastically. There was a pause, then Sam said “I do too. Bye.” Sam snapped his phone shut and tossed it into his briefcase. He stared at the blackboard for a moment, contemplating the hug he had shared with Josie just moments before. ‘It was just a congratulatory hug. We’re friends. Friends can hug.’ Sam reassured himself. Then he thought about Lara. He loved her. He really did. But lately, it’s seemed like something has changed. They just didn’t seem to share the same interests as they did back in college. ‘It’ll be good to go home and have a nice night with Lara. Bring things back into focus.’ Sam tried to convince himself. ‘We just need some time together.’ Lara had been so busy with her final year of law school and studying for the bar exam, that they had hardly had any time together over the past year.

“Sam?” Josie asked, lightly touching his arm to get his attention. She had spoken his name two or three times since he hung up the phone. “Are you in there?” she asked jokingly.

Sam looked quizzically at Josie, and then smiled. “Huh? Sorry, Josie. I guess my mind was somewhere else.”

Josie chuckled softly. “Yes, I think so.” Seeing that Sam was obviously distracted by something Lara said, she decided she better leave him alone rather than linger around to discuss the next day’s plan. “I was just going to say good-bye.”

Sam smiled reluctantly at Josie. It had become a routine with them that they would spend the next two or three hours after school together, presumably to discuss the day and the upcoming class, but inevitably, their conversations would turn to almost every other topic. He always felt so relaxed and happy during their talks. But, unthinkingly, he had told Lara he’d be home in half an hour, and Josie must have overheard him. He needed to go home early today.

Sam sighed and tried to smile cheerfully at Josie. “Okay, Josie. Have a nice night. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Josie smiled back at Sam. “Yes, I’ll see you tomorrow. You have a nice night too.”

“Thanks.” Sam replied, then quickly added “You did a great job today, Josie.”

“Thank you.” Josie replied before walking out the door. Her face was beaming from Sam’s compliment.

Hooves of Fire!    Sam's eyes followed Josie as she walked out the door. Watching the way she moved, a wave of desire shot through him that startled him with both its intensity and passion.

But he could not control it.

"What are you doing?" He muttered in exasperation as he shoved his papers in his briefcase and prepared to go home to Lara.

Only he didn't want to go home to Lara. For the first time, he realized what he really wanted was to follow Josie. And he also let his thoughts linger on just what following Josie might lead to.

He could still feel her embrace and her scent, that intoxicating floral scent was very much in his memory. And despite all his efforts to the contrary, he was very very aroused by what had happened between them before the phone call.

"Damn!" He cursed at himself, but it was no use. The feeling of having Josie in his arms had more than unnerved him because in all their time together, he'd never had such a surge of desire or passion for Lara.

MirandaBaby    Sam took a deep breath as he put his key into the lock. ‘Maybe she’ll tell me she’s leaving.’ Sam thought. ‘Nice. Way to focus on your relationship.’ Sam berated himself. Even though his thoughts have most definitely been on his beautiful teaching assistant lately, Sam felt an obligation to focus on his relationship with Lara. The door opened as he was about to turn the knob.

“Sam!” Lara exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around Sam’s neck. “You’re finally home! Come in. Come in.” Lara eagerly grabbed Sam’s hand and led him into the living room of the small apartment they shared.

Sam smiled, searching for the intensity between their hands that he felt whenever he was anywhere near Josie. ‘Stop it.’ Sam reprimanded himself. ‘Lara is your girlfriend. Think about Lara.’

“Lara. What’s all the excitement?” Sam asked, getting caught up in Lara’s enthusiasm. Seeing Lara like this, happy, excited and animated, reminded him of when he had first met her, back in under graduate school at Yale. She had had a contagious energy that Sam had never experienced before.

“Sam…guess what?” Lara asked. Not intending to wait for an answer, she continued. “I was offered an associate position at Gavin Nelson and Vaughn! Can you believe it? My first choice!” Lara squealed with excitement.

“Lara! Congratulations!” Sam exclaimed, genuinely thrilled for Lara. “Wow! That’s terrific. We should celebrate! Where should we go?”

Lara smiled at Sam. “Actually, I’ve already ordered in some Italian from Marida’s. I hope you don’t mind. There’s just so much to talk about and do, I didn’t want to take up any time by getting ready and going out.”

Sam nodded his agreement. “Sure, that sounds great. It’s your night.”

Later, after the food arrived and they sat down for dinner….

“So,” Sam started, “Gavin Nelson and Vaughn…they’re in the Sears Tower, right?”

Lara set down her fork and took a deep breath. “Yes, they are…but I was hired for their New York office. Isn’t that great? New York!”

Sam looked at Lara, trying to comprehend what she had just said. “New York? What about Chicago? What about us?”

Lara got up from the table and grabbed some papers from the desk. “Actually, Sam…I’ve been doing some research, and there’s an opening for an associate professor at Columbia. You will come to New York with me, and get a real job, one worthy of you…and me. After all, I will be an associate and the most prestigious law firm in the United States.”

“A real job?” Sam spat. “Lara, we’ve been through this. I love teaching high school.”

“I know Sam, but please…how will it look to the partners if I’m involved with a high school teacher?” Lara responded coolly.

“Involved? Is that all we are? I thought we were a little farther along than that?” Sam responded sarcastically.

“You know what I mean, Sam. Don’t take this personally.” Lara replied.

“Don’t take this personally?” Sam interrupted. “How can I not take it personally?”

“Sam. You’re acting like a child. Why can’t you do this one thing for me? Honestly!” Lara argued.

Sam was fuming. “You are…” Sam began. Unable to get the words out and maintain his composure, Sam merely got up, grabbed his coat, and walked out, slamming the door behind him.

Hooves of Fire!    In a blind rage, Sam drove through the streets of Chicago, not realizing that he was headed to Finegans, the sports bar he and his colleages always went to after hockey games. Finegans was like a second home to the team and everyone there knew all the teams members.

In fact, there were many nights when Sam liked being at Finegans better than being at home arguing with Lara, and this was definitely one of those nights, whether he admitted it to himself or not.

All he could think about was how selfish and demanding Lara was and how little she cared about His happiness and what he really wanted.

Stomping into the bar, he practically threw himself into the corner booth, where he and his teammates always sat. The owner, Jonathan, was a good friend of Sam's and he could tell by Sam's entrance that he'd had another fight with Lara and probably wanted a beer.

Starting over to the table with a pitcher in hand, Jonathan was surprised to see a shapely blonde tentatively approach Sam's table. He hesitated, giving the two time alone.

Looking up with a disgusted sigh, Sam expected to see Jonathan, but instead his eyes met the beautiful blue eyes of his teaching assistant. Only, she was dressed differently than he'd ever seen her.

Josie had on a black dress that excentuated every curve and Sam had never seen anyone look more beautiful - she literally took his breath away.

"Are you okay, Sam?" She asked quietly, with obvious concern.

"I am now," He replied then relaxed enough to give her a cockeyed grin. "Hey Josie."

Jonathan studied the two with amazement. Sam walked in looking like a thunder cloud, but now he looked like the happiest man on earth.

"Woo hoo, na na, hey hey, kiss Lara goodbye," he started singing under his breath as he did a little dance in the aisle and turned back towards the bar to give them a little time alone as he continued to sing happily to himself.

"You looked a little upset or something," Josie continued hesitantly as she twisted her hands together.

Sam frowned, remembering Lara and their fight, much preferring to focus on his teaching assistant. But at that moment, a tall dark haired man came up behind Josie and snaked a possessive arm around her. Sam's frown turned to a menacing scowl.

"You okay, babe?" The newcomer asked as he looked from Sam to Josie and back again, meeting Sam's scowl with one of his one.

"I'm fine, Peter, really. I'll be back in a minute," Josie said, purposefully moving out of his embrace. "This is Sam. We work together - I'm Sam's teaching assistant." she explained.

"How you doin'?" Peter asked as he reached out to shake hands with Sam.

"Nice to meet you," Sam lied, gritting his teeth as he shook the other man's hand.

Still the dark haired young man stood his ground until Josie gave him a little nudge and pointed to the other side of the bar.

"Go on Peter. Tell Anita and Gus, I'll be right there okay? I have something I need to talk to Sam about."

Peter was barely out of hearing distance, when Sam could contain himself no longer. Trying his best not to sound possessive, he couldn't help but growl, "So, who is Peter?"

Josie looked towards the other side of the room and back again.

"He's a blind date. My friend Anita arranged for us to double date. I just met him," she explained.

MirandaBaby    Sam couldn’t believe his ears. What was someone as beautiful and wonderful as Josie doing on a blind date? Still, he couldn’t help but be pleased. Sam realized that the thought of Josie seriously dating someone, especially someone like Peter, made him inexplicably jealous.

Josie glanced towards the booth, silently asking if she could sit down. Embarrassed at his lack of manners, Sam quickly stood up and gestured for Josie to sit down. “I’m sorry, Josie. Please excuse me. Would you like to sit down?” Sam asked, smiling sincerely at Josie.

Josie was once again amazed at how wonderful Sam was. He was always such a gentlemen, and always made her feel special. “Thank you,” Josie responded, smiling shyly up through her eyelashes to Sam. After Josie slid into the booth, Sam sat down across from her. Jonathon, who was observing this encounter from bar, couldn’t help but notice that Sam had a ridiculous grin on his face. ‘Thanks are looking up.’ Jonathon said to himself.

Sam and Josie sat in awkward silence for a few moments. Josie inhaled the intoxicating scent of Sam’s cologne, and her mind instantly began to imagine being here on a date with him instead of Peter. Sam, too, was lost in thought, mesmerized by Josie’s wonderful floral scent. ‘She’s so beautiful,’ Sam thought to himself. ‘I wish she were here with me instead of that other guy.’ Realizing that he was sitting there staring at Josie, Sam cleared his throat and flashed her a sexy grin.

“So, Josie. A blind date, huh?” Sam asked mischeviously, arching his right eyebrow as he teased Josie.

Josie flushed with embarrassment. “I’m afraid so…. I’m not very good at meeting men, and my friend Anita, over there, well….let’s just say she knows quite a few men to fix me up with. I try to get out of them, but she’s not an easy person to say no to.” Josie looked up sheepishly at Sam, hoping he wouldn’t think any less of her because she couldn’t get a date on her own. ‘I’ll bet Lara has never had to go on a blind date,’ Josie thought to herself. Josie glanced conspiratorially towards Peter as she leaned in to whisper to Sam. “Actually, he gives me the willies.”

Sam let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. Deciding to lighten up the moment, he joked, “I don’t know Josie, the Vinnie Barbarino look might be coming back into style.”

Josie’s mouth flew open, surprised that Sam was teasing her like this. She liked it. “Sam Coulson!” she exclaimed in mock horror. She didn’t know how to respond to his teasing. Sam grinned at her stunned silence.

“Sorry, Josie. I shouldn’t make fun. He’s probably a really nice guy.” Sam said, trying to sound convincing. Josie looked up at Sam across the table. It was just like him to say something nice about someone, even someone was creepy as Peter. ‘He’s so wonderful.’ Josie thought for the hundredth time today. Just then, Josie glimpsed Anita motioning towards her to come back to the table. Sam followed Josie’s gaze.

Josie looked back at Sam. “I guess I better get back to my table.” Suddenly remembering the official reason for why she came over to see him, Josie continued, “I’m sorry, Sam. I completely neglected the reason I came over. Are you okay? You looked really upset when you came in.”

Sam swallowed hard and sighed. “Thanks, Josie. Yeah, I’m fine. Actually, I’m one-hundred percent better after talking to you. Thank you.” Sam’s smile made Josie’s heart flutter. Again. Like usual.

Sam stood up as Josie got up to leave. “I’m glad to hear you are doing better, Sam. Have a good night.” Josie said reluctantly. Sam reached out and gently squeezed Josie’s shoulder, thankful for her presence. “Thanks, Josie. You have a good night too. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Josie gave Sam one more heartfelt smile. She couldn’t help but look back at Sam and smile as she joined the others.

Sam sighed heavily and dropped back into the booth. Sensing someone standing next to him, he looked up, hoping against hope that Josie had returned.

Hooves of Fire!    But, to Sam's disappointment, it was not Josie.

Jonathan smirked down at his friend and handed him another beer as he slid into the seat that Josie had only just vacated.

"Nice," Jonathan said as he gave a meaningful glance at Josie and the rest of her party.

"I don't know what you mean."

Jonathan shook his head a chuckled, taking a sip of his own beer. "You don't, huh? I think you do."

"You mean Josie?" Sam asked innocently, stealing another glance at his teaching assitant.

Jonathan's smile widened. There was no mistakening the look on Sam's face when he said her name.

"Oh, I see. The famous Josie."

Blushing, Sam stammered. "I-I-I don't know what you mean."

"You've been raving about her for weeks, Sam. Every time I talk to you, it's Josie did this and Josie did that. You forgot to mention that she was a beautiful blonde," Jonathan snorted. "I only hope you let Lara down easily," he added sarcastically.

Sam's smile was replaced by a frown. "Oh God, Jon. Here she comes," he said, clenching his teeth as Lara marched into the restaurant and headed for their table.

Thinking at first that his friend meant Josie, Jonathan grinned. But then the look on Sam's face told him that it wasn't Josie's high heels clattering on the floor.

Jonathan made a face, not looking around. The expression on Sam's countenance told him all he needed to know. "Let me do it for you," Jonathan suggested, with a devilish wink.

"Do what for whom?" Lara demanded loudly. "I should have known he'd be here crying on your shoulder, Jon."

Without looking at Lara, Jonathan took another drink of his beer and answered, "If you didn't act like such a bitch, he wouldn't be here, Lara," he answered matter-of-factly, still not looking at her.

With that, Lara picked up Sam's beer threw what was left of it in Jonathan's lap and all eyes in the sports bar turned to their table.
