 Presidential Puzzle, Part 1
Interesting trivia about each American president from George Washington to Chester Arthur.

How much do you really know about the first 42 men to occupy the highest political office in United States? Have you even heard of some of these guys? The following crossword contains 21 facts: one devoted to each president from George Washington to Chester Arthur. They range from humorous to bizarre to ironic to little-known to just sort of interesting. However, like the presidents themselves, some of these tidbits are more memorable than others.

My source for this particular puzzle is the following book:

I recommend it to anyone who’s interested in reading entertaining biographies and learning largely obscure facts about the presidents; even the presidents who were pretty obscure themselves. The book has no agenda other than showing that presidents are just as human as anyone else. There is more interesting information about some of these presidents than what I share, but in that case, it didn’t work as well in a crossword puzzle. Speaking of which, you should try to solve the puzzle before looking at the page on Amazon, since some of the answers are listed there.

Below are the names of the first 21 presidents in the order they served. The underlined portions of each name are what you should enter into the puzzle if a name is called for. Not all answers will be names, however, as some clues name a president and seek other information. In either case, don’t use spaces in your answer. For example, enter John Adams as JADAMS.

George Washington          John Adams          Thomas Jefferson

James Madison          James Monroe          John Quincy Adams

Andrew Jackson          Martin Van Buren          William Henry Harrison

John Tyler          James Polk          Zachary Taylor

Millard Fillmore          Franklin Pierce          James Buchanan

Abraham Lincoln          Andrew Johnson          Ulysses Grant

Rutherford Hayes          James Garfield          Chester Arthur

Two Harrisons and two Johnsons have served as president, but the second president to bear each of those names can be found in "Presidential Puzzle, Part 2 [13+] along with the rest of the next 21 chief executives.

Across:
2This president, whose term lasted four months, is often considered to have been assassinated by a bullet, but it was probably the unsanitary medical instruments that killed him.
4Rumor has it that he took part in over one hundred duels; using guns, not banjos.
6George Washington didn't have wooden teeth, but he had some made of bone from this animal.
8One of this workaholic, Manifest Destiny-oriented president's diary entries extensively analyzed handshaking. Borrrrrrrring.
9This general, often thought of as a butcher, couldn't stand the sight of blood.
10President Hayes' wife owned this type of cat, which may have been the first of its kind in the United States. It was sent by the American consul in Bangkok.
12This British queen thought Millard Fillmore was the handsomest man she'd ever met. This, of course, was before the birth of Fabio.
13He chased his secretary of the treasury from the Executive Mansion with a pair of fire tongs. So much for the "Era of Good Feelings."
14John Quincy Adams made a habit of skinny-dipping in this river.
15His autobiography never once mentioned his wife, Hannah.
17This war hero openly admitted that he never voted.
18He was born during the Washington administration, and his youngest daughter died during the Truman administration, over 150 years later.

Down:
1While at his Massachusetts farm, he drank half a pint of hard cider for breakfast every morning.
3This sole lifelong bachelor among the presidents had a very close relationship with William Rufus King, his predecessor's vice president, leading some to suspect he was gay.
4Andrew Johnson once compared himself to this historical figure. Move over, Beatles.
5Thomas Jefferson smuggled a strain of rice out of this country, and it's grown in the United States to this day.
6His inaugural speech lasted 105 minutes, the longest ever. His term as president, on the other hand, lasted about one month, the shortest ever.
7When he evacuated the Executive Mansion, the invading British ate the dinner that was left behind.
8This forgettable president was supposed to ride in his successor's inaugural parade, but...no one remembered to get him before the event.
11This tallest of all presidents once threw a man twelve feet out of a building after the man attacked a political supporter.
16This "king" of a president had a lavish carriage with gold lace curtains.
