The Great Slacker Challenge... or something...
I haven't really thought up a title yet

Raise your hand if you're a slacker. Never mind, that's too much hassle to count. The point is Writing.com is full of slackers and procrastinators just like me. Hell, I could write the book on procrastinating if I ever got around to it. On this little online community slacking takes the shape of not getting group stuff done, not judging contests promptly, and especially not writing as much as you'd like... or at all. Here's a couple scenarios:

*Bullet* You spot a W.com contest and think "Ooh, I have a great idea for that contest." You tell the creator you're going to enter, or you at least tell yourself. Maybe you even start the poem or story. And then you never finish it, you never enter the contest, and you never know how you might have done.

*Bullet* You get a great idea for a story or contest or fundraiser or just about anything. Maybe you start it and maybe you don't. Eventually you either forget about it or quit caring. Perhaps you had too many soap operas to watch or too many ticks to pick off your pets to give it the attention it deserved.

*Bullet* I'll put some more scenarios in here, but I can't be bothered. I'm going to go play some poker right now. I'll finish this section up later.

If you answered yes to any of those, you're a slacker and/or procrastinator. It's about time we slackers get rewarded for our amazing skills at prioritizing, adjusting our schedules, and meeting deadlines at the last possible minute. That's where this contest comes in. *Left* Modify this sentence so it doesn't end in a preposition.

How It Works

*Bullet* This contest is for short stories only. I detest poetry. (Besides, it's going to take me forever to judge the entries, so at least if I'm mostly judging long pieces I'll have an excuse.)

*Bullet* It needs to be a new story created specifically for this contest. If you use an old story, you're not a slacker, you're just a cheat. Cheaters will be hunted and beaten. Torture via Chuck Norris facts will commence shortly after. Don't worry though, it'll take me at least six months before I work up the energy to hunt you down.

*Bullet* It should conform to the prompt listed below.

*Bullet* It does NOT need to be a complete story. This is a contest for slackers, not for real writers. In fact, I'm probably not going to read more than the first few paragraphs. I'll tell you I'm going to read the whole thing, and then I'll take months to do so, but in reality I'm never going to. Eventually I'll just assign a prize arbitrarily because I don't want to read all the damned entries. So basically you should have the beginning of the story. The beginning should totally blow me away, and leave me wanting more. But because you're too much of a slacker to write anymore, and I'm too much of a slacker to read anymore, it should stop just when it gets interesting. That's the sign of a truly talented procrastinator. The best entries will probably just be submitted as a rough outline described in a sentence or two. I know we're all very busy, and putting our thoughts to paper is terribly time-consuming.

*Bullet* If I get so much as an inkling that you wrote this story well in advance of the deadline or that you've *gasp* finished it and revised it, you'll be disqualified immediately. C'mon, people, this is serious. I know you can do better than that. I'll continue to disregard your entry, and I'll delete your post... eventually.

*Bullet* The deadline for the stories is to be announced each round. The contest might be scheduled monthly, so you can expect to see a new deadline every six months or so.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

NOTE TO SELF: Here's where I'll insert a bunch of cool formatting
and rule specifics over the next several weeks... or months, whatever.

Judging

I'm going to try to find some judges. I'll be judging some of the entries myself, the shorter ones mostly. More info to come...

Deadline and Prompt

Deadline: I'm shooting for mid June, so around midnight one of those nights. It mostly depends on which night I can be up at midnight to post a contest closing message. It'll probably be on a weekend, but I'm really busy and tired after baseball practice, so I'm not sure yet what day exactly it will be. Let's play it by ear. The contest has a roughly two week leeway in terms of the deadline anyway.

Prompt: I haven't thought of a prompt yet. I didn't realize so much thought goes in to creating a cool prompt. So I'll just leave it up to you guys. You have until the last few hours of the contest to come up with your prompt and start your story.

Prizes

The GP reserve has been a little low of late, and I've been too busy to start earning some extra ones. Once I've saved some GPs I'll let everyone know what the prizes are. I'll probably give out a merit badge or something. Don't worry, I'll definitely have some GPs earned before the contest ends. Also, if anyone would like to donate, that would certainly help me clean up my GP debt so I can start saving for the contest prizes. I'll list your name and donation somewhere on here. Things are really hectic though so don't panic and think I didn't receive the GPs if you don't see your name for a couple months.
