Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll message him first, asking some general questions like if he's familiar with the genre, who his target audience is, and his motivation for writing. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I agree with Duchess. Don't pass. As you pointed out, you are his target audience (so he claims) more so than anyone else in that group. He needs to know that ex-members are NOT a good resource to understand most LDS readers. Nor are they a good source for understanding our doctrine. He needs to seriously do some research and researching ANTI stuff i...[Read Full Post]

Re: Dilemma critiquing "LDS fiction"

I would comment on both areas separately.

Review the novel as is. Give critical feedback on style, plot, etc. Be as thorough as possible, while encouraging at the same time so he doesn't grow bitter about any of your comments and decided to ignore you on the doctrine aspect.

Then include notes on the spiritual aspect. I'd send the comments ...[Read Full Post]

Definitely do not skip on commenting. He needs to understand that God doesn't second-guess anything and that nobody is more important than the Savior and God Himself. I'd suggest a private message first, then gently broach the subject when it's brought up at the next meeting. Especially if you're the only LDS member of the group.
Dilemma critiquing "LDS fiction"

Earlier this year, I joined a brand new local writers group. There's about seven of us. One of the members just posted the prologue of his novel JACOB'S LADDER. He said that he writes LDS fiction, but is not LDS himself. He takes his experience from an ex-wife who was a member.

I think I'm the only LDS member in the group. His prologue ma...[Read Full Post]

This is the first time that I've run into it with writers. I don't regret it and it doesn't change much. I still plan to try and find a place in the general market. I'm not afraid of...[Read Full Post]

It's not something I've experienced personally in the writing community, but it is something I've heard about, and it kind of makes me nervous. Especially since it would be easier to publish a--erhm--moral book within the Christian community...

I was raised in the Church, but my Father didn't join until I was about 4 years old. I have two older half-sisters who are not members and long ago were taught to hate and fear "Mormons and their religion". Both of my Grandfathers ...[Read Full Post]

Hello Everyone,

My name is Sara. I'm joining a ward in my state of Pennslyvania. I'm so incredibly excited to be baptized. The church has been such an inspiration to me. It's brought a lot of negative feelings from my family. I was wondering if any of you have been converts with the same experience? How are your family situations now?
Re: Talk help!

I think about 15 minutes is the average for a talk. And the first 1-3 can be dedicated to discussing your family, how you and your husband met, a bit about your kids, etc. If you can tell a story that ties in to your talk, all the better! The last minute or so for testimony bearing, which gives you only 10 minutes or so to fill with actual ta...[Read Full Post]
