1000 AD South-East Italy

I'm a twenty-three year old man, In my pocket I have a small penknife, and a handbook of edible plants. I imediently find a flowing river, which, to the best of my knowledge is usually clean. I soon find a small cave lodged in the side of a hill, and declare it my home. I then start to make a fishing spear, using my penknife. Its thin, and long and I...[Read Full Post]

England 1000AD

I would get dropped off in England for the language reasons. I would regret not taking Latin further at school because it would have allowed me a much wider choice. Not sure I could last a cold winter without insulated accommodation or modern day clothing.
By going back in time I am in possession of two powerful commodities, knowledge of things unknown...[Read Full Post]

Rhein river area

How funny.
SeverinR is Severin Rheinfelser, circa1310
I would stay in the Rhein river area, Specifically in area that will be the sight of the Rheinfels castle near St Goar. Which would not be built until 1245.(long after I have gone)

I would learn to hunt, fish and work with a sword. Maybe work on the river and try to avoid the fights in that tim...[Read Full Post]

Interior England

I would keep to the interior of the British Isles. Mostly staying in the woods to avoid Viking raiders. I know how to make a bow from yew and string from a pig gut (woodcarving class last year) and I am a reasonable shot, so I would probably be a hunter that trades in skins at various villages and towns for a more varied diet. ...[Read Full Post]

Re: Re: Living the Viking Life

I suppose the ability to grow grapes was what gave Vinland its name. Have you ever seen the Mappi Mundi? That's supposed to be the first map to show the new continent 'Vinland', centuries before Columbus discovered the New World. Fascinating!

Great comment, Steve. Our last name is Davisson and I have Swedish ancestry as well, so I can identify with your ideas.

There are runes in eastern Oklahoma - I saw them myself. I wish we knew more about the Vikings time in the New World. That was during the Medieval Warming Period when they could grow grapes in Newfoundland.

Living the Viking Life

If I woke up in the year 1000, I'd want to be in Scandinavia. I've got a rough grasp of the Runic alphabet (although I can't speak a word of Nordic!). I'd want to be part of the Viking raiding parties, travelling across the seas in longboats. I's encourage another journey to the west, across the ocean to Vinland. They would write anot...[Read Full Post]

1000 AD Germany

Wow... I would probably have to brush up on my German a bit - fortunately I did study the history of the German language in college as well so that may come in useful! Being 6'2" with Blonde hair and blue eyes should help me fit in Germany more than say in Spain at that time.

I think the biggest decision to make would be whether to work with o...[Read Full Post]

Re: Gunpowder

That might work! You'd have to figure out how to make saltpeter to make gunpowder, also how to get sulfur. You also have to survive long enough to get to where you can make the gunpowder.

Re: Re: Re: What would I do in 1000AD

You probably wouldn't get away with it. Dickens had a passage in which a man was thrown in jail in the late 1700s for not prostrating himself before a train of monks. You pretty much had to go along with church unless you were very rich and powerful.

Becoming Wealthy in 1000 AD

Clothing - Water - Food - Money/trade goods - Shelter - Language.

Those things are needed in that order. I'm an older man and as I sit here I find about 96 cents in coins in my pocket (And two $100 bills, a $10 and two $1, which are useless). I have a tiny pocketknife (about two inches of blade) and a dozen or so keys, of which half are made of b...[Read Full Post]
