Thanks to Coolhand for the wonderfully sinister Awardicon that first adorned this dark contest! And thanks to Riot™ for the sadistically super-sized Awardicon that currently graces this dark contest! ![Sinister Stories Contest Banner [#1791982]

Do you have a knack for frightening fiction? Are your stories... sinister? If so, you've come to the right place! Formerly known as the Necronomicon Contest, Sinister Stories is a monthly short fiction contest hosted by "The Dark Society" . The contest is open to all Writing.Com members, so if you think you're sick and twisted enough to take home the prize, then just follow the instructions below and prepare for judgment!
THE RULES
Only one entry per person, per round.
The deadline for entries is the last day of every month @ 11:59PM WDC time.
New prompts will be posted once the previous round is closed.
Anything 2,000 words or less is acceptable. Short fiction only, please. See prompt for May.
Any genre, rating, or subject matter is allowed.
Post your entry as a bitem link in the forum below. Ex: {bitem:1556724}.
Spelling and grammar count. While a typo or two will not disqualify your entry, proofreading is an important part of the writing process. Frequent errors and/or poor readability are likely to affect your chances of winning.
New items only (i.e. must have been created between the opening and closing dates of the current round).
You may edit your stories at any time. However, they may be judged at any point after the contest deadline, so there are no guarantees that any changes you make after the deadline will be read.
All entries will receive a rating and qualifying review.
There is only one judge per round. That judge is solely responsible for determining the winners and eligibility of entries. The judge's decision on all such matters is final.
Donations are welcome and will not exclude one from submitting an entry in the same round. Stories are judged on their own merits, not on the amount (or lack) of donations made.
There must be at least six (6) entries in a given round in order for all the prizes to be given out. This is a competitive writing activity, not a "win by default" situation. If there are less than six entries but at least three, only first place will be awarded. If there are fewer than three entries, a consolation prize will be awarded. Honorable mentions (and the prizes for such) may be given at the judges' discretion.
PRIZES:
1ST PLACE: 25K Awardicon an appropriate Merit Badge 5,000 GPs.
2ND PLACE: 10K Awardicon an appropriate Merit Badge 5,000 GPs.
3RD PLACE: Winner's choice of a 10K Awardicon OR an appropriate Merit Badge (please specify preference in your entry post, otherwise the judge will choose) 5,000 GPs
Donations are more than welcome. Any donations will go directly toward increasing the value of the prizes, in either the current round or future rounds. Anyone who donates 35,000 GPs or more in any given round will receive a Merit Badge. Please send all donations to The Dark Society (Group #1556647), with a note that it's for the Sinister Stories Contest. Or you can just send them in a forum post below!

Let one or both of the images inspire your work. Remember, the images do not have to be used literally. They merely have to inspire your story. Let the ordinary become extraordinary. This round you can write stories, prose, poetry ... whatever your dark heart desires.
