I agree, also. Using emoticons and shortcuts in friendly e-mails or text-messaging can be all right, but not in serious work and not in static items in WdC, although I haven't seen too much of that so far.

I agree with the three of you. This is a writing site, for heaven's sake! If a person can't take the time to write properly here, how do they ever expect to be published? Yes, I use LOL and other little well-known abbreviations

Yes, Joy, it's one prompt per day. I type about 60 wpm (I think) cuz I learned to touch-type in high school. So I get about a paragraph done. It's hard for me to type w/out making corrections, though (even though we're not supposed to!), so I don't get to type all I'd like.
Re: for Writers

Thanks Starr.
I went there yesterday and today. I love it. It seems they give one word and expect you to start writing immediately. They don't cut you off so you can write as long as you want, but they take whatever you have written in one minute and post only that part. From what I have read, it amounts to one or two sentences. Also, if I am not mistaken, they are givi...[Read Full Post]

I have been guilty of using ROFL or LOL in emails off Writing.com. (hanging head in shame.)

However, and it's a big however, when I receive an email here containing what I call teener texting, I simply delete it from the system without sending a "thank you" reply.
I found myself over the years falling prey to using such writing when I wasn't meant to.

Did I ever hate myself when I noticed.

Now I even sit with a dictionary next to me while writing in my offsite blog; as a way to force myself into writing normally in informal settings. I still slip up with LOL but that is about it.

Personally text and ...[Read Full Post]

I agree with you, but I feel a bit stronger about it. Text messaging style writing should stay in text messages. As for internet shorthand, as long as it is with people you know and know that they will understand it, fine. But not in other internet settings.

Not all :) as teens use informal writing at school

It is clear in todays world that the debate in word usage is growing.

Personally I think text message style writing and internet shorthand do not belong in school papers, unless asked for.
