Publishing question

Hi!

I don't know if this is the place to ask such a question, but I'll try:

My niece is 17 and writes poetry. She would like to publish and is considering self-publishing. I've already warned her about the costs and need for self-promotion, but wondered what others might add.

Also, has anyone worked with Dorrance Publishing? It looks legit...[Read Full Post]

I have a book that I am writing for three of my friends for christmas, and I desperately need reviews!!! I have my first five chapters up, but I'll only post my prologue on here. I really just want review on the characters, the dialogu (if its cheesy, if it flows, and if it sounds believable.)I want to know if the story is believable, if you can fe...[Read Full Post]

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Who do you write for?

I completely agree with this! My writing style, at the moment, is simply opening up to my characters and seeing where they lead me! Many writers write with a specific ending in mind....my ending is vague, only because, at the moment, I am open to so many possiblities!!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Who do you write for?

I think that is the most important factor.....you have to have an investment in the story...an investment in your characters and where your story is going. If you write simply to please your audience, I believe your work will suffer!! This is not to say that your audience should not matter to you; just that your writing is your own perspective!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Who do you write for?

BTW, I do like Rewrite's take on the subject of the ending.

There's no cookie cutter answer to this, but I firmly believe every story could have multiple endings, and each could work very well. I also believe the "right" conclusion comes into view as you near The End.

Re: Re: Re: Who do you write for?

A simple question with multifaceted answer. First and foremost, I write for me. If the story doesn't really interest me, if I don't have some kind of significant, emotional investment, I have uber trouble writing a simple paragraph. I've written via both storyboard (outline), and by stream of conciousness (just wing it and see where ...[Read Full Post]

You mentioned writing your story for yourself, as you cannot please everyone!! I have found myself on the edge of my seat on more than one occassion while writing my book! It is like reading a good book for the first time, only one in which you know will end exactly how you want it to!

Re: Who do you write for?

Hi Amarisa,

I would say it depends on the desired outcome of what you're writing. If you are writing the piece with no intention of shooting for publication, then write the end the way you want to see it conclude (It's your story darn it!). However, If you are looking to publish... then it might be a little more complicated. In one sense you want to see the story...[Read Full Post]

Who do you write for?

When writing an ending that could go a number of ways, who do you write for? Do you follow your writer voice and end a story the way you know is best, the one that's the most artistic or the one that makes sense, where the story wants to end.... Or, do you write for the readers? Making an ending the way you know they'd like it, ensuring that they...[Read Full Post]

Hey there! That's a good question you've got. One I've wrestled with myself. On the one hand, I don't want so much exposure to my work that if it is ever picked up by a publisher that it won't go anywhere because it's already there (not to mention all the other things that can happen to something once it's online).
