If you haven't done so, please take a look at "Discussion points: How do you review?" A few more thoughts and questions that sprang to mind while reading the public reviews (feel free to jump in with questions of your own, too - just start a new thread!). Please number your answers (and/or repeat the questions, so new folks won't have to go back to this message every time just to understand the answers): 1. What do you think of a public review that includes the entire text (or even a large percentage) of the item being reviewed (e.g., poetry)? Why? 2. Do you think it's helpful when a reviewer attempts to rewrite a poem for the writer? 3. Do you think it's helpful when the reviewer rewrites a short passage of a poem or story, to illustrate what he means by a suggestion? 4. Does it annoy you when writers use "l33t" speak or chat shorthand (e.g., "u" instead of "you," or "ppl" instead of "people") in their work? When reviewing such work, do you comment on it? 5. When you read a review, are there any common expressions or phrases you find annoying or condescending? What are they? 6. As a review recipient, how do you feel about: - colored text - emoticons - graphics in a review? What works for you and what doesn't? 7. What runs through your mind when you read a public review that is more about the reviewer than it is about the item being reviewed? (If you've ever posted such a review publicly, what were your reasons for doing so?) |
