It has rightly been said that writers write--every day. We know that this "watchword" can be difficult at times. Regardless of our interest or level of craftsmanship, we can find ourselves wandering in our mind (and in our writing) to new avenues, interests and genres to renew our passion, our muse, or our interests.

One of the most intimidating genres within our craft is the mystery fiction story. One of the largest genres in all of non-poetic writing, the mystery can be found at the top of any "A" list you might choose. To the novice, it might seem as if writing a mystery is so easy that anyone can do it, and make money. But, from the very first page, that illusion is usually lost to the writer of substance and quality. Easy to read, or watch, the mystery is actually one of the most difficult of all genres to write well.

Once that first wall is encountered, most writers just fold their tents, and go to some other genre to try. It need not be that way. With some basic tools, a change of thought or realistic belief, the mystery can become the most enjoyable of all writing endeavors for the writer.

This workshop will not be able to cover all the possibilities. We will deliver some of the basics that all mystery writers need to create a successful mystery. The successful student will complete, by the end of the workshop, a new, original mystery story of between 2,500-5,000 words for evaluation.

All writers are encouraged and invited to attend this workshop. The work is challenging, and will require work on the part of the participant. The outcome will be well worth the extra time and effort expended to create a successful mystery. If it works in a short story, it wil work in a full story, a novel, or even a series.
