1 FIRST WORKSHOP-- JANUARY 13-20

BERNIE THOMAS' COMEDY WORKSHOP

So ... you want to write funny, do you? Do you want to hear your readers laughing out loud? Do you want tears streaming down their cheeks? Do you want them rolling in the aisles? If so, you've come to the right place. My name is Bernie, and I will be your instructor.

I've geared this workshop toward writers of any level who want to mix a little humor into their writing, or write out-and-out comedy, be it fiction or creative non-fiction. We'll focus on the everyday occurrences in life most people can relate to, and attempt to find the humor in them. That can be anything from an amusing anecdote to a simple statement by someone that you found rip-roaringly funny. The focus here: to impart humor using only words, and since you're writers, that would be nice.

2 SECOND WORKSHOP-- JANUARY 20-27

KANSAS POET---METER MADE EASY

Many beginning poets, and a few that have been writing for some time, are intimidated by meter in poetry, especially iambic and trochaic meter. When you research meter, what you find is often quite confusing. This workshop will begin with the basics of pure or syllabic meter (counting syllables). You will be amazed at how a syllable count can enhance the rhythm of a poem. We will write in various forms (rhyming and non-rhyming) of syllabic poetry. We will then move into the more complicated forms of meter - iambic, trochaic, and anapestic. Don't be intimated; let this be a learning experience. The instructor is one who battled a fear of iambic meter for years before finally trying it, so I emphasize with your intimidations. Come join us. larryp

MARLENA & AXILEA --I LOVE POEMS FOR PROSE WRITERS

Who am I and how do I write - do I consider myself a writer of poetry or prose
and where are the boundaries between the two ?

Writers of poetry often receive reviews questioning the validity of free form works. While
writers of essays often write such beautiful visual pieces, it's tempting to label these authors poets. James Agee is a wonderful example of a writer of prose with a poet's
eye. Whether you write prose or poetry, if you have an interest in expanding your capabilities, this workshop is for you ! We can help you take a simple one-liner, or a
chapter from a text book and transform it from prose to poetry.

We've geared this workshop for you prose writers who have an interest in writing poetry and traditional poets interested in expanding your repertoire. We plan to present 2 or 3 prose poems by different poets and have you pick out certain words that will make it a stand-alone free verse poem. Then you will each be given a topic (the same ) and be asked to write a prose poem, and a stand-alone poem from prose. This should be fun and exciting.

The focus of this workshop: to spend a week turning prose into poetry. For traditional poets, the workshop will provide a delightful opportunity to spread your wings.

The concept for this workshop: (open to all Writers):

You will compose found and parallel poems based on a descriptive passage you have chosen from a piece of literature you are reading or writing. You will pick out words, phrases and lines from the prose passage then arrange and format the excerpts to compose your own poems. The process of recasting the literature you are reading - helps writers become more insightful readers and helps develop your creativity in thinking and writing.

BOB--SEMPER FI'S WORKSHOP-- "SHOW DON'T TELL"

Want to concentrate on basic fundamentals of "Show Don't Tell" writing? {Not that you don't understand the difference, but perhaps you often find yourself the victim of
relapse in this area) We all do. I believe my class will help you write with more
confidence and authority in this area.

Do you wish you could capture the imagery that spices and colors writing to make it
colorful and provocative for the reader? Learning to use the five senses in writing
your stories is extremely important as we know if you we are to be successful writers. I
assure you, I will help the willing to learn. {I have personally found that writing a
good poem now and again is an excellent method to hone my imagery skills.)

Good, cohesive dialogue is perhaps one of the most important ingredients of excellent
writing. The proper pacing of dialogue, the subsequent tags (if any) are an art form not
easily mastered. My lesson plan will show you how to become brave using dialogue and it's attachments thereto. Up for the challenge? Join me !. I look forward to working with
you and making us all better for it.

KATE'S WORKSHOP-----A 'SHORT' JOURNEY TO PUBLICATION

Provided, of course, the copy editor is sufficiently enlightened, which we will do our best to accomplish in this weeklong interactive journey. This workshop is designed for emerging writers who have a decent grasp of grammar, a basic grasp of how to get from the beginning to the end of a story, and are ready to take the step to paid publication, and/or who have published credits and want to take the next step to focus on targeted markets/venues.

We will begin by each selecting our target - I will provide links to several publications (not contests or fee-based publications) that welcome emerging and established writers - as we each begin drafting a new short story. I will offer a few versatile prompts, or you may write with guidance from your own inspired muse.

We will prepare our drafts over the first two days, then read and comment on each other's stories the next two days. We will then each revise, focusing not only on the content and plot, but how well it meets the guidelines set by the targeted publication.

Then, we will each draft and finalize a brief third-person bio (don't worry, you don't have to be already published to do this) to submit with our story.

The last day, we will each read at least one of our team members' finalized stories to catch any lingering glitches ~ be that other set of eyes!

Finally, polished and put together, we will hit the ‘send' buttons and/or seal the stamped envelopes.

If you're ready for this creative, interactive journey, welcome ^_^

PURAVIDA'S WORKSHOP---WHO ARE YOUR CHARACTERS ?

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of writers with the belief that ‘characterization' can be taught, practiced, and learned. The teaching part, I have garnered from classes taken, as well as classes I' ve read about. I'm very fond of the ideas put forth by David Poyer at Writing by the Sea.

We will study the ubiquitous four sources he refers to in modeling characters.
1) People the author knew or knows
2) Newspapers, histories, or word of mouth
3) Adapting characters from previous characters.
4) Made up or ORIGINAL characters

We will discuss the four categories he uses to develop information about his characters.
1) General-from environment and heredity
2) Physical-what we refer to as "description"
3) Personal-social or moral aspects
4) Emotional-mental or psychological features or qualities

We will also talk about his theory of developing characters from 'the inside out' and from 'the outside in'. (When we proceed from the inside out, we don't need a lot of external details.) We will discuss which approach is more appropriate for the Protagonist and which can be used for the Antagonist or walk-ons. Let's take a look at other sources. On our site there is an excellent ‘Character Development Work Form' developed by Wannabe that can be very useful.

We will try some exercises used to develop characters. For example: Your main characters write letters to a friend describing each other. Or you write a job requirement ad for an actor to play the part of your Protagonist. Don't worry 500 words or less will do it.
We will also discuss in the forum the importance of names for characters, the difficulties in portraying race, religion, gender, and nationality, and the insincerity of creating wholly good or evil characters.

Some people use the Zodiac signs to create characters. If you're a believer, why not? I'd prefer to put my marbles on the Four Patterns of Temperament, or the sixteen personality types designed by Myers-Briggs. I use both to make certain the emotional aspects of my characters are believable. Lawrence Durrell said that all strong characters revolve around a central flaw. What do you think?

Whatever methods you choose to use, remember what Albert Einstein said. "Not everything that counts can be counted; and not everything that can be counted counts. It's a learning process to find your individual style.

SHI'S NARRATIVE POETRY WORKSHOP

Narrative poetry is poetry that tells a story. It is probably the oldest genre of
poetry.

If you like writing your poems as "storytelling" then this is the workshop for you. I
will put emphasis on my own form of poetic storytelling. I like to add humor in many of my narrative poems.

Come and join my workshop if you like telling your stories in rhyme as much as I do.

I am leading this workshop for beginning and intermediate poets for one week only.

When writing narrative poetry the best place to start is with your own life experience. Maybe you have many moments in life that will be captured in this workshop. However, we won't be writing epic poems. Just moments in time using these elements of narrative poetry~

1. Character
2. Setting
3. Conflict
4. Plot

We will be putting together poems telling of a series of events, but I can teach you how to do it with a flair!

During this time I will assist you in creating atleast a few of what may be your favorite poems! ShiShad

CHALLENGEME'S WORKSHOP----*Star*WRITING LIFE*Star*

Stepping out from behind the protective mask of "fiction" and writing your life's experiences and memories can be, for many of us, a daunting task. Getting started seems to be the largest hurdle. Let me assist you in overcoming your hesitation, and breaking into the writing within you that has all the vitality and believability of real life. In a week long intensive course, we'll be exploring the aspects of drama, comedy, and universal themes that run through our lives as we personalize our writing with our own unique descriptions, retellings, and points of view. Share the new or relatively new experience of autobiographical writing with others in a supportive, non-competitive environment. All skill levels welcome, but bring your willingness to delve deep and write. Diaries, journals, blogs, and/or static items will be utilized for this workshop. MetaphorSquared

10 *Star* TENTH WORKSHOP--FEBRUARY 24--MARCH 2

AXILEA'S WORKSHOP----BEYOND DEFINITIONS AND CLICHES.

Why do we choose to write free-form poetry? What is poetry?
What is the difference between prose and poetry?...

I have been asked these questions many times - and it has always surprised me - so I
would love to consider the possible answers while looking at a few examples of very
different poems (some of which by well-known authors) that can easily contradict the
"usual" definitions. This part will be more theoretical and I am sure that we will able to discuss different points and definitions of poetry (Emily Dickinson's, for instance, and other poets... including our own) Some of the answers will come from Marlena's workshop.

Then, we will write - be creative - by using an element/aspect from each
of the poems we analyzed, focusing on the idea of "avoiding clichés".
Not an easy exercise, I am sure that our creativity will help us to transform "common place" into "rare gem" (to use a few clichés here) Smile.

Another question I would like to consider is: do we have to write it all.?.. some reviewers say they want "the whole story". Anything that is oblique or unsaid will be labeled by them as "confusing". On the contrary, I think that a certain mystery, words left unsaid, personal associations of words to create new meaning, or simply new feeling, all of these are intrinsically part of the art of poetry. Here too, we will have a creative exercise. AXiLeA

I hope you'll enjoy the reflexion/creation of this experience.

LADYOZ'S WORKSHOP----KICK THE PLOT HABIT

Do you find yourself coming up with story ideas all the time, but getting nowhere with fleshing them out? Keep tripping over the plot? Too often, plot gets in the way of telling a story. Too many otherwise good stories are strangled by the strictures of plot. This one-week workshop will show you how to simply tell a story by asking a series of questions about the characters and their situation. Participants will be given a story title and theme to use for this exercise, and will be encouraged to build a story around a series of questions. Participants will be expected to write a minimum of 500 words per day during this workshop - do not sign up if you can't put in the time! However, this is an easy class suited to beginner or intermediate writers in any genre. Ladyoz

CUBBY AND ARAKUN'S WORKSHOP--WRITING FOR CHILDREN

Are you fascinated with the rhyme of Dr. Seuss? Do you enjoy writing for children? Perhaps you've never tried it, but would like to give it whirl.
Writing for children can be tons of fun, but it's not as easy as what you might think. There are several things to consider before you can just sit down and write something up to send out for publication.

Dr. Seuss books were successful because of his outlandish characters, catchy rhymes, and simple but fun stories. He loved to mimic sounds and use repetitive words, along with made-up ones. He accomplished an easy and entertaining way for children to enjoy reading.

By the way, March is a great month to take a workshop with Dr. Seuss in mind. His birthday is celebrated each year on March 2nd by young and old alike.

Classes are limited to five students. We have little doubt this workshop will fill up quickly, so if you are interested, sign up now!

MARIA & ANNE'S WORKSHOP--EMOTIONAL POETRY

Writing about your emotions can be quite difficult as many of us will have discovered. In this workshop, we will encourage you to overcome your inhibitions and to let your inner voice speak.

Expressing your feelings in the form of a free-verse poem can help you to understand better what's bothering or exciting you. Don't hinder yourself by searching for rhyme or rhythm, let the words flow free and still achieve the power and appeal of poetry.

During this week we will encourage you to free-write and spur the right side of your brain, offering exercises to access and express your emotions. We'll provide examples of emotional poetry by some well-known poets as well as WDC members, to inspire you and to show you what might be the result of your efforts. Reading each others work and discussing about it should play an important role in this workshop. At the end of the week you may have even found a few new friends!

BLUESKY'S WORKSHOP----BREATHE LIFE INTO YOUR POETRY WITH METAPHORS

Journeying beyond mere comparison, a metaphor joins seemingly unrelated elements. In simile, one is compared to another; in metaphor, one becomes the other, taking on its essence.

Simile: Her life was like a storm on the sea
Metaphor: Her life was a storm on the sea.

Making visible the invisible, metaphors allow us to paint pictures of feelings, thoughts,
or experiences, resulting in poetry filled with vivid images as well as offering the
potential to enhance and expand meaning, often revealing unexpected complexities, both
for the poet and reader.

"The metaphor is perhaps one of man's most fruitful potentialities. Its efficacy
verges on magic, and it seems a tool for creation which God forgot inside one of His
creatures when He made him." ~~Jose Ortega y Gasset

In this workshop, we will examine the use of metaphors in classic poetry. We will also
write poetry using metaphors and conceits (extended metaphors). This workshop is designed for any level, beginner to advanced. Join this workshop and let your imagination soar!

EPILOGUE

There have been some wonderful moments during the presentation of these workshops.
One of the most touching is ShiShad's response to teaching and preparing a workshop
the first time. Read and enjoy !

Where I Belong

When Gaby asked me
this was her plea-
"Shi, will you run a workshop for me?"
Without hesitation I did agree.
Then set out to make it
the best it could be.

Carefully, choosing my topic
with glee-
Narrative Poetry is what
I decided it should be;
excluding Ballad and Epic,
limited time was the key.

So I set out gathering
all information I could,
and began the formatting
so each member understood.
My group would consist
of five members and me.

My job was to assist;
what they would learn- no guarantee.
My workshop was scheduled
one week in February.
For months I assembled
everything that was necessary.

All of a sudden, my turn had come;
my stomach tightened.
I had no where to run!
I was frozen and frightened.
How could this be?
I never imagined it could happen to me!

All of these doubts
and fears rushed through
my head- I wanted to shout
"I'm not a teacher! I haven't a clue!"
"What on earth am I doing
in this group with you?"

Then much to my amazement
poems began coming in.
Magnificent accomplishments
bringing forth great big grins.
Stirring up emotions deep down inside.
My heart filled and nearly burst with pride!

Calmly my doubts finally disappeared
enthralled by these gifted writer's words.
Unknowingly, they banished all I had feared
as my heart sang to
music of their magical chords
I knew in an instant I was where I belonged.

ShiShad
