Welcome to the Keep the Home Fires Burning forum. This is a place for families, friends, loved ones, and supporters of our brave Troops ~ and the Soldiers themselves, of course ~ to gather together to network here in the Writing.com Community and lend our prayers, thoughts, and other forms of support to one another. Any and all GP's donated to this Forum will go toward Upgrades for Soldier's who are members of Writing.com. Thousands upon thousands of our marvellous Troops are presently serving three and four combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, with ever diminishing amounts of "down time" being offered them in between tours. Additionally, thousands more find themselves stationed far from home as Support Units. Imagine, not just with the coming holidays but all year 'round as well, the loneliness, isolation, and worry these heroic men and women are experiencing on behalf of all of us. At a time we most keenly wish to be near families, loved ones, and friends, these brave Soldiers are far from our loving embrace. They need to know in every way possible just how much we are thinking about and praying for them... and how deep is our gratitude for their abiding dedication, immense courage, and great sacrifice for their country. I've been so saddened of late to learn just how much our deployed Soldiers must go without ~ basic items that you and I take for granted (and often discard) daily. Such things as packaged snack items, cookies, sweets, microwavable foods, Ramen Noodles (ANY meal or beverage that can be made with boiled water, including Instant Cofee, Creamer, Sugar/Sweetener, Tea, etc.), Slim Jims/jerky, Trail mix/Energy Bars/Instant Cereals, powdered Kool-Aid-type items, books, DVD's, magazines, pearlized tampons for the female Soldiers, personal hygeine items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo and hair rinse, and hand/body washes and cremes, pre-paid Long Distance Calling Cards ~ even socks, tee-shirts, and underwear... and so much more. Additionally, many of the Troops long for mail and/or e-mail of ANY kind. Given the huge number of truly wonderful and generous WDC family members to be found in this Community, I know we could collectively do a GREAT deal (at very little cost in terms of dollars, time, and effort) to brighten the lives of these Heroes who are daily laying their lives on the line for ALL of us. To that end, the purpose of this forum will be two-fold: 1. To communicate and network, inclusive of posting names and addresses and/or e-mail addresses of Soldiers you know of who would like to receive packages/mail/e-mail below. From your posts, I'll create a list here of which Soldiers need what. WDC members can then "adopt" a Soldier (or group of Soldiers), INCLUDING WOUNDED SOLDIERS, and post updates, as well. More than one person can "adopt" Soldier(s), and we can even let them know how to contact us here at WDC, whether it be via your own e-mail or via this Forum. Also feel free to post any thoughts, wishes, or prayers/prayer requests for our Troops. This forum is meant to be a place of kinship, sharing ~ and above all, support in every way possible, for Soldiers and their loved ones. 2. To provide links to truly legitimate and effective websites where more information regarding Soldiers in need, what to send, how to send it, and FREE U.S. MAIL packaging may be obtained. The first link is for the one of the finest such Sites on the Web, " AnySoldier.com. " More will be added in the Future. Be sure to explore the AnySoldier.com Site in depth ~ here you can find Soldiers and their "Wish Lists". The AnySoldier.com Site even offers free postal packaging! You can make a monetary donation to them if you wish, but there is no mandatory fee associated with utilizing the AnySoldier.com Site whatsoever. http://anysoldier.com As part of the "Keep the Home Fires Burning" Adopt a Soldier effort, ALL profits from the sale of " Valentine Visions " C-Notes from my below C-Note Shoppe will go to WDC funds that provide support/encouragement/Upgrades for Soldiers, Veterans, and their families. Each of the ten available "Valentine Visions " C-Notes are priced at 1000 GP's, which is modest in comparision with other WDC C-Note prices, and which means that after WDC deducts its 250 GP's charge per C-note, the 750 GP's remaining per sale will be donated to these Soliders & Veterans WDC Forums. Your WDC nickname will also be listed on the Valentine Angels Honor Roll here in the "Keep the Home Fires Burning" Adopt a Soldier Forum (see below), and after the Valentine's Day is over, I'll select one name from the list of "Valentine Visions" C-Note Angel Benefactors and award them 10,000 GP's from my own personal GP coffers. The name of that winner will be announced both in this Forum and in my Blog.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Who will be the first purchaser??? Whoever it is will receive 500 FREE GP's! Please pass the word and if possible, participate yourself ! Thank you so very much, and have a joy-filled Season of Love!!!

I haven't heard from Jim Bob in a while, and I am hoping it's just busyiness that is the reason. He's one of the best guys I've ever met and he's been with my brother through thick and thin. I thought I'd post his address here and if anyone is of the mind to drop him a letter, I'm sure he'd appreciate it. He's been deployed a long time and it looks like my brother will be soon to follow. Any cards or notes would be appreciated. Just mention that you got his address through the sister of Hayden Parsons and he'll know where it's coming from. SFC Jim B. Field D. Co. 3/144 IN Camp Adler, Talill APO AE 09331 I know it's like a ray of sunshine when he gets anything or any words from anyone in the states. I appreciate the effort if anyone wishes to help us keep him uplifted. dee/Diane Hill ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ font:times}A WDC WIFE & CHILDREN OF SOLDIER DEPLOYED IN IRAQ: Everydaywriting * For someone else to send a calling card to a soldier overseas: (My husband is in Iraq right now and I wish I could speak to him everyday.) * For someone to pay the tab for a soldier (and his family), as it might be the last meal they have together and they shouldn't have to worry about money. (My husband told me that he wished people would buy him food while he waited for his flights (to and from Iraq) instead of sending care packages.) * That someone takes the time to help another. You never know if at that moment their world just came crashing down. (When dropping off my husband at the airport, my car died. I was left in the parking lot, in the cold with no phone and 3 children. It took the tow company 5 hours to come. During that time, one lady gave me a box of cookies and another tried to jump my car.) * That someone would help another person with either putting food on the table or heat in their home. (We had to make a choice between eating a family meal together and lowering our bank account. Once the car issue happened it was fixing the car and having heat in the house. Due to medical conditions, the car was needed and a little room heater was brought. The rest of the house is freezing but now it's heat or food. I wish I had known that so many things would happen. I would have skipped that last family meal. But I wish I never had to choose between food and heat.) * That someone would help a single mom with Christmas shopping this year. (I'm so far away from friends and family. It's so hard to do things with 3 kids, one being only 1 years old-I feel like a single mom! I wish I could make life seem normal for them and stick with the family traditions but even trying to bring up that huge Christmas tree box is a chore. How am I going to shop for gifts when they are right there with me? I wish I had someone to help.) * That when others make their next suggestion for yellow or Rising Star, they find someone who may not have the best written pieces, most GPs, or their ports posted over the site but instead get to know that person and recommend them for their big heart and the little things that come from it. (I spoke to someone today who wished that they could be a rising star or even yellow but felt that due to their writing level and the fact that they couldn't promote themselves, that it would never happen. I honestly feel that everyone has something that they are good at and told her that.) * That people could see the creativity in others and look past the awful grammar and spelling to see that there is a story and with a little guidance can be one worth reading. (I find that while reviewing, it's those poorly written items that I give a 2.0 rating to that catch my heart and stay with me forever.) * That someone could acknowledge a gem (as mentioned above) by giving it a ribbon for creativity. * That others would see that special ability that everyone has to offer to the writing world. (There are many out there who write because it's something that is just theirs. They might believe it's the only thing that they are good at or that if everything else in their life was gone, this would be all that they had. They may not write well but they do it and whether they choose to believe it or not, they post their work on here in hopes for support and encouragement and just the knowledge that there is something that they too are good at.) * That someone would acknowledge a writer with a merit badge for that special thing that they bring to the table (tying into the above.) * That someone would donate a sig for an up-and-coming contest, donate GPs for the awards, or even send in an entry and promote it. (There are so many on the site who want to get involved but can't. I've met them, they start contest and no one shows up. They feel that it's due to the fact that they have no GPs or rewards to give out, that the contest isn't sigged up and decorated, or that their black cases turn people off. I wish they didn't feel like they were drowning in a pool of the big dogs.) * That someone would listen: someone would listen to those dreams and fears, someone would just get out there and do something. (I'm not happy. It's the holiday season, I'm away from family, friends and my husband will be gone for another 11 months, fighting not only for our freedoms but for his life. There's so much that I wish for. I think that all of the above somehow applies to me in many ways but I just can't admit that I am that someone who needs that wish to come true. Maybe I'm ashamed at the fact that I can't be that someone to make those wishes come true for others. I know it's just the emotional ride that I'm on. Depression hits. There so much I wish to say and share with others, my dreams and my fears.) *Thank you for allowing me to share, thank you for being that someone.
