GOAL & OBJECTIVES:
Writing.Com is a large community of writers and readers who log in each day to read, write and share their talent with the rest of the world. There is an average of at least twenty new members each day; new members or newbies, who might feel daunted and intimated by the sheer size of the site and all it has to offer.
Unfortunately, we've also noticed that these newbies tend to leave the site after a few days or give up eventually when they feel they do not receive the attention they deserve. "The WDC Angel Army" has taken the challenge and the goal/aim of this program is to target those promising writers, 'capture' them and give them a reason to go on and to continue being members of the site. If we can reduce the number of writers who leave the site due to 'lack of attention' or 'being invisible', we have succeeded in our program.
MENTORS:
Anyone can sign up to be a mentor- which means black, yellow, blue, and purple cases are eligible to pick a newbie. You must be a mentor/guide to this newbie for a minimum of one-month. At most, you can work with your newbies for three months before 'graduation'. Who qualifies as a newbie? Anyone who has been here for less thanthree months. You must pick the newbie yourself and make it known in this forum with the header: I HAVE ADOPTED: and post the username within the message body. It will be taken note of here:
Please take no further steps until an email has been sent out to the newbie regarding your decision. Once we hear from him or her, you have the green light. Please note that whoever you adopt must be at your discretion. We would like to encourage serious writers, so if you notice a newbie you think has a lot of potential, then by all means adopt him or her. You can adopt a maximum of three newbies per month. Your role as guide/mentor includes the basics of reviewing their items, helping to improve their writing if necessary, encourage them to join in activities and contests around the site. Show them the workings of the site (especially setting up their bios!), how to make use of the tools and important forums to add to their favorities. If you (the mentor) are confused about anything, do not hesitate to ask here. We are all here to learn after all. At the end of each month, all adoptees are encouraged to turn in their best items in a special contest just for them:

Mentors please encourage them to turn in something for a chance at cool prizes! Newbies will also be featured in our "Angel Review Forum" where our reviewers will get a chance to visit your porfolios for the duration of the month!
ADOPTEES:
Newbies seeking mentors should post in the forum below by clicking on the 'Post New Message' link. If you're willing to go into details with what you need help with, that's very much encouraged. Each adoptee will receive an email from me or simply's doing better :-) with helpful instructions on their mentors and how things work. The forum can be used to share your stories about your mentor - say good things about him/her (or bad if that's the case), to share your experiences about WDC so far, or just hang out and chat with other members of the site. Adoptees are encouraged to do their part as well - this to be determined by your mentor. If it means reviewing x items a day, that's a goal you have to be determined to achieve. If it's to write at least x number of words a day or week, enter a contest, or participate in an activity, that's fantastic as well. And at the end of each month, we encourage you to turn in your best items in a contest just for you! "Adopt-a-Newbie Contest" . There's a chance to win some cool prizes!

TESTIMONIES:
Dear Angel Army, I just want to take this moment to express my gratitude to this marvelous program. I was lost; now I'm found. I didn't know what to do on my first few days, then came along an Angel sent by your Army. How blessed I am. Now I can navigate this site like a pro. Well, I'm stretching it, but indeed, I love what you do, and I love my mentor--the Angel who took me under her Wings. Now ...I'm inspired to write and post my items here. I have learned how to use the mysterious bitem format; how to create folders; how to review; etc. You will be seeing more of me around. Bless you, especially writeartista. Thank you. Thank you. - CaliforniaGirl91905
I just wanted to say Thank You so much for your support. You have been an inspiration to me. You have given me the self confidence I need to continue writing after 11 years of self doubt! And you have brought a smile to my face when I needed it most! Thank you WDC! -Nataliya Maize
I am so grateful to you and your Adopt-A-Newbie project to help newcomers like me learn the ins and outs of this site. It seemed overwhelming at first, but after I spoke with my mentor: orientpearl (pnalayab), I am now ready to post my first item; use the WritingML, the Bitem Format, give constructive reviews, find a group to join, and many more. I feel so blessed to be adopted already by orientpearl, and she's been showing me the ropes around the site. I am so lucky to find out that I am only 35 minutes away from her. She came to my house and showed me everything I needed to know in one hour -- things that would have taken me 20 days to learn by myself. We also talked about alzheimer, and I couldn't believe how knowledgeable and helpful she is in this regard. My novel is about alzheimer's because a loved one has been diagnosed with the disease. This is a wonderful site with friendly and helpful members. I am going to have fun, for sure. - alz heimer
Hello! 'm a 20-something college drop-out (for financial and personal reasons), but I've been called a brainiac, so I might be able to assimilate in this intellectual community of varied talents and creativity. I thank Ariana and the ANGEL ARMY's Adopt-A-Newbie program, for showing me the way. I've always been an avid reader; now I would like to broaden my horizon through writing. Through my mentor's help, I now have the confidence to start posting my work. - Erlyn Baya
Mara♣Mc Bain ~ Nano 35K has been absolutely FABULOUS at helping me both in finding my way around and in looking over the story I am working on for the Fan Fiction Contest. Even when I wanted to give up and go back to being just a reader around here she wouldnt let me. I think she sometimes cringes when my IM pops up but she has the patience of a saint and the wicked humor of a sinner! She is a hellacious writer and a even greater person. I knew I raised her right. Thanks for the great program and giving me a chance to have my say! - Sam I Am
I just wanted to say thank you for the Adopt-a-Newbie Program. My mentor Janie Ruth Ryals has been a wonderful support. At the time that I met her, I was feeling a little lost in the big world of WDC. Now I'm a pro and I have a new friend. Janie is a wonderful writer and inspiration to me. She has been a great friend and a great mentor, surprising me with Merit Badges and Awardicions when I least expected it. Her kind words have helped to make me feel comfortable in this community and have helped me to proudly call WDC my second home. Thank you for this great program. I intend to return the favor to another newbie in the near future. - Susanna
Angel Army, I could not tell you how much your program has helped me gain confidence in myself and in my writing. I have learned the ins and outs of this community, and all the little things that had eluded me before. As for my mentor, Pat Nelson ~ A.C.E. Hearts, she was the best. I formed the greatest of friendships with her. One that I hope to keep forever. She has rescued me many times when I have been lost and has provided support when I needed it the most. I can't sing her praises enough. Thanks for paring me up with such a sweet lady. I enjoyed every bit of my experience with this community and am considering becoming a mentor myself. Thanks so much! -Jewel Busy Busy Busy!
Angel Army, The adoption program is wonderful. I had a ball! My mentor, Kathleen, fit my personality well. I did not need a lot of hand holding, but she made herself available to answer questions whenever I need Kathleen encouraged me and helped me get my wet feet dried!! I am currently enrolled in three New Horizons classes, Tell Me a Story, Cache I and WCD Navigation., and I am the class assistant in the Sunrise class. As soon as the semester is over, I will be glad to mentor a Newbie! --JC English
Hello, I just wanted to get back to you and let you know that my mentor JoDe's ACEing NaNo, or JoAnneDeWitt, Wonder Writer, as I like to call her, was a wonderful mentor! I'm sure that our friendship will last still. We talked about all kinds of stuff. She helped me with my novel and told me to 'show not tell'. She helped me deal with Writer's Block and she also helped me through a death of a close Uncle. She's truly a WONDERFUL person and anyone who gets to know her is a very lucky person! I am so glad that I was got the chance to get to know this wonderful lady, and I cannot wait to see her succeed in the Writing World! With love and blessings, HannaTheWriter
This program has helped me alot, and Felix was a great mentor!! As a 15 year old still (LOL), I have this very beneficial, and I wish it all the best in the future. I will definately become a mentor. Thankyou so much, Poplar
Dear Simply, This program was essential to my becoming a permanent part of WDC. My Mentor ~CaptaingingerbreadWOMAN~ instilled in me the confidence that enabled me to go on and apply for the Degree Program at the Writing Academy. If my mentor hadn't explained things and been there to answer every question fully, I would have become discouraged and possibly left the site and missed out on the discovery of who I really am. I wouldn't have evolved into the poet I am today. I am one of the proud members of the Academy's poetry competition teams and have been birthed into a realm of creativity that would have before been missed, but the patient guidance and loving instruction under a caring mentor like Natasha helped make me who I am at WDC today, I want to earnestly and sincerely with deep love and appreciation thank you, my mentor - CaptainTaya and Harley Palmer for rejuvenating the gifts and destiny within me. Although, our craft is to know no bounds, what I am feeling and experiencing today because of the Newbie Program, truely goes beyound words. - Pschismo
This was a great program! Without Mike (black rose), I may have given up on the complexities of this site early on. Having a mentor also challenged me, because I felt like I was part of the group, and felt like I was letting my mentor down if I did not follow through with the things he asked me to do! It was wonderful! --aggykryss-working toward goals
My mentor [aralls_is_happy] was great. We had some great chats and she gave me some great feedback on my work. I love the idea of this and would love to be a mentor. --Ria
Thank You so much. I thoroughly enjoyed the Adopt-a-Newbie programme. My mentor, Mara♣Mc Bain ~ Nano 35K, was so encouraging and gave me lots of advice both on writing and how to navigate around writing.com. Also the little cNotes and badges I received were nice touches and I really learned to use WDC better. It's a great idea to help beginners and get them really interested in what the site has to offer. - Nadene
I have really enjoyed my first few months on WDC. The community is exceedingly welcoming, and having a mentor gave me the confidence to explore the site. There are incentives to writing that can only be found through increased interaction between fellow writers, and having a mentor was the first step in developing these relationships. A great program! I would love to return the favor and become a mentor myself. Like I said, it was an
invaluable experience. I don't think I would have had the confidence to put myself out there through my writing without somehow to sort of walk me through it initially. - Noa נעה
