Objectives: 1. To fill the last hours of summer, et cetera. 2. To take a simple concept (fiction contest, very simple) and make it as unnecessarily complicated as possible (see "Rules," below). 3. That's it, really. Also I've been wanting to host another fiction contest for a long time, and figured I'd better quit bullshitting and just do it. Rules: 1. The idea here is not altogether unlike the idea behind "Follow the Leader: Journal Edition " 2. For each round, I will take the first FIVE people to sign up. Sign up in the forum, then email me privately and include the following four items in your email: - a single-word noun or proper noun (e.g. "mojito," "loneliness," "Spain") - a brief description of an unnamed character - a complete, grammatically correct sentence - a length of time (e.g. "thirty-six hours," "one week," etc.--no shorter than twenty-four hours) 3. The day after we get our fifth sign-up, I will post a message in the forum containing the first prompt--a noun, a character and a sentence--without indicating which player provided the prompt. I will also state the deadline for the prompt as indicated by the player who provided the prompt. 4. Every player, including the one who provided the prompt, will have the length of time specified to write and post to the forum a piece of fiction containing each of the items in the prompt. 5. The day after the first deadline, I will post a message containing the second prompt. And so on. (I'll choose the order of the prompts.) 6. Pieces of all types and ratings are welcome, but as I'll be the sole judge this time around, it would probably behoove you to do some investigating into what type of stuff I like to read. If this works out, and I host subsequent rounds, I'll start drafting judges. Scoring: 1. For each piece of fiction you produce, you can earn a maximum of 5 points. I will judge your piece based on its overall quality and adherence to the prompt AS WELL AS its stylistic appeal, grammar and mechanics. If you fail to include any aspect of the prompt, or if your piece is up to one day late, you will lose one point per infraction. You'll also lose at least one point if it is, like, totally unreadable. 2. For each person who earns a perfect score on YOUR prompt, you will receive one bonus point. That is, if one prompt yields five 5s, the person who provided it will earn an extra five bonus points. Guidelines: 1. Blah blah blah. You know the drill. I look favorably on contestants who are openly encouraging to one another--I might even award bonus points to a contestant who offers quality reviews to his fellow contestants. But don't harass anyone and don't be unduly nasty about your fellow contestants' writing, please. 2. When you email me with your prompts, please be realistic. If you want to set a quick deadline because you want to read hard-'n'-fast fiction, or a longer one because you want to read more polished pieces, do so, but don't set a deadline that plainly doesn't make sense with the subject matter. You know. 3. You may incorporate the elements of the prompt as strictly or as loosely as you wish, as long as they are present and obvious (except for the noun, which I'll cover below). That is, the prompted character may be central to your story, or may be peripheral, as long as (s)he is in there someplace. If you need to tweak the prompt sentence a little for formatting reasons, you may, but you must include it somehow. 4. You do not have to include the noun anywhere in your piece if you don't want to, but it must be central to the story. If the noun is "margarita," for instance, it's not enough to simply mention a peripheral character sipping a margarita. Be creative, but be overt. Prizes: This is a pretty intense thing, I think, so once I tally final scores, I'll multiply each score by 500 to award gift points (for a maximum of 15K gift points), plus place an awardicon on the winner's top-scoring piece.
