One day, a few of the 30 children in my class were absent. To each of those present I gave a cardboard cube and either a red or a blue pen. I asked each child to make a die using the usual convention that opposite faces summed to 7. I then put all the red ones on the table with the 5 on top and the 3 facing me. When then counted all the pips on the sides facing left and on the sides facing right. The sums were both perfect squares. We then repeated the process with the blue dice; the sums were both primes with a ratio of greater than 1 and less than 2. How many children were absent?
