"Grammar is to a writer what anatomy is to a sculptor or the scales to a musician. You may loathe it, it may bore you, but nothing will replace it, and once mastered it will support you like a rock."
~ B.J. Chute ~

The mechanics of grammar, punctuation, and spelling are tools of the trade for the writer; and thus, it falls to us as reviewers to be sure that these tools are being used correctly. Indeed, the success of the written piece may depend upon how well we have reviewed it, and whether or not we gave the writer the suggestions s/he needed to improve the piece to achieve its success. When you think more about it, you begin to realize that as reviewers, we should also be proofreaders, for we need to have a critical eye for proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. No short story, poem, article, novel, etc., will achieve success without these standards.

In this course we will learn how to review any type of writing carefully, proofreading for grammar, punctuation, and spelling, checking to be sure that these writer's tools are being used properly. We will also learn how to give our corrections and suggestions to the writer in a positive and encouraging way.

Welcome to our classroom. The forum below is where you will leave your classroom assignments, and where we will have our class discussions.

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES

If you have any questions about any of these guidelines, please contact your instructor for this class directly.

1. Create a static item for all your assignments.  For example, Assignment 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D may all be on one static item to conserve space in your portfolio, and it also helps me so that I won't have to go through so many documents in your folder for just one assignment. If you do not know how to create a static item, please see this article: "Newbie Letter - bitem, static instruct.

2. When you have completed an assignment, you can post it in the Classroom in bitem form. If you do not know how to post in bitem form, please see this article: "Newbie Letter - bitem, static instruct. If you have further questions after reading this questions, please contact me and I'll help.

3. We are not going to be working on all aspects of a good review (mood, setting, characterization, plot structure or the like) in this class, and so we will be calling each review done here a 'polish' rather than a 'review' to differentiate between a full review and our very specific type of review. When we make a Review Tool, be sure that you explain to the author that your review is actually a 'polish' so that readers know that they are being critiqued only on grammar, spelling and punctuation.

5. PAPER DOLL GANG NEWBIES: Your review requirements for the Newbie Project will be fulfilled weekly through this course. If you are required to review an item from the Rockin' Review Station for your newbie activity you may use that review here as well, so long as it is a proof-reading polish.

6. Remember that when you do the polishes, I will be critiquing them, and I will be particularly looking for those things which we have learned about in the previous lessons. For instance, our if topic is spelling, I will be checking your polish to see if you caught the spelling errors. If we are in a week down the road where we have previously learned about spelling and commas, then I will be checking to see if you caught those kinds of errors as well as the new material.

7. Yes, you can make your grade better by doing polishes for extra credit. Besides that, it’s great practice! If there are no polishes to do in the gifting station, you may do a regular review of anyone at WDC, keeping in mind the rules mentioned in the previous lessons.

8.  Each polish/review finished must be posted in the Classroom Forum with the Review Number which is given to you when you do the the polish/review.  In this way I will be able to check on your polish/review and critique it. If you have any questions about how to post a polish/review, please email me directly.

9.  Every polish/review that you do must be affiliated with the Paper Doll Gang Reviewer's Group. To affiliate a polish/review: Check on "Make Public". Go to "Affiliate this review with a group", then click on the pull-down menu, and click on The Paper Doll Gang Reviewers Group. This is how you affiliate a polish/review. If you have any further questions about how to affiliate a polish/review, let me know, and I will email you directly.

10.  Each polish/review must have a Rockin’ Academy Review Signature at the bottom of your review. These can be found in your Student Handbook at this link: "Rockin Academy Sigs.
