![]() Welcome to Fable Fantasy Each month we offer a contest in an in/out item which will be posted on the bottom of this page. Anything in regards to speculative fiction will be the genre for the contests. They'll even be holiday related on certain months of the year. You simply go to the linked page and post your item number for your entry. What is Speculative Fiction? It is a combining of multiple genres into just one category. Stories that dwell into the realm of imagination are considered Speculative Fiction. This category can be found from the beginning of history itself, such as the first story ever written, "The Epic of Gilgamesh". It categorizes ancient works to modern works. The term Speculative Fiction was first used by Robert A. Heinlein in reference to sci-fi. Heinlein was an American science fiction writer who was one of the three masters of sci-fi in the Golden Age of science fiction, which reigned from the late 1930s to the 1950s. The other two were Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Then in the 1960s and the early 1970s, the term was used to express the dissatisfaction with traditional or established science fiction by writers and editors, falling into disuse around the mid-1970s. In the beginning of the 21st century to our present time, it has been used as a convenient collective term for a set of genres. What are the genres of speculative fiction? The three main genres of speculative fiction are science fiction, fantasy and horror. But they also include supernatural fiction, alternate history, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, and apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction. Some of the past famous writers and characters are Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and poems, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Robert E Howard's Conan and Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan. But what makes a story defined as speculative fiction? It is everything that is unreal, supernatural, and magical, set in the past, present or future that defies the world we know. Rules 1.)
