Original Character Tournament
Authors face off against each other and their characters! Auditions have closed. |
|
Welcome Wondering what an original character tournament is? Rather than the typical contest, we use a tournament setup, in which people pair off head-to-head each round until only a single winner reaches the end. There is an emphasis on characterization and character development, and participants will be using the same character(s) through so long as they’re in this. Participants aren't writing just their own characters, though – everyone will also be using their opponent’s characters each round, and everyone will be sharing the same setting. As you face off with another author, your character will be facing off with that author’s. You must find your character's reason to continue - and a reason for your opponent not to. Maybe it's a physical fight, or a battle of wits. Perhaps your opponent simply has a (in)convenient crisis that forces them to turn back, or the setting itself drives them away. You could even join up with your opponent's character, so long as you're confident about writing his or her character by yourself. Whatever it is, only one of you can move on to the next round. Make your character the hero (or the triumphant villain). By vote, we have a fantasy theme. Check out the prompt in "And the story is..." Structure Auditions Anyone can enter at this point. To audition, you’ll need to provide two things: a character reference and an introductory story. Based on the results of the auditions, judges will be selecting 8, 16, or 32 participants to continue through the rounds The character reference should explain anything worth knowing about the character(s) you’ll be using. What does he look like? How does she feel about life? What are the character’s nervous tics, mannerisms, way of talking, and odd habits? The introductory story should help to solidify everything you say in the character reference. It also needs to explain how and why the character is getting involved. Your introduction should be no longer than 2,000 words. Rounds After the auditions, those selected to participate will be paired off. One winner will be selected from each pairing, and the winners will be paired off again in the next round. In the final round, the winner and runner up will be decided. Each round (including auditions) will last for one month. Entries may be posted as links to items (that is preferred, please use bitem format) or directly into the forum. Linked items can be rated up to 18+; directly posted entries can be rated up to 13+. Rules Judging The judges are: Novalyyn The best of the auditions will be selected by consensus. Subsequent rounds will be decided by two judges (not everyone will get the same judges) and a public poll; the complete results of the poll will have the same weight as a single judge's vote. Sharing your entry and encouraging votes is fine, but anyone caught stacking the poll (by alternate accounts, or by collecting non-reader votes) will be disqualified. Characterization is the emphasis of this tournament, but entrants will also be judged on general writing ability, such as story-telling, grammar, and punctuation. Judging will include basic critiques on auditions, and thorough critiques on subsequent entries. If you aren't sure you can take a potentially harsh critique, you are encouraged to wait until you feel more comfortable about it. Judging periods last for two weeks between each round. Prizes Champion - 100,000 GPs and a merit badge Runner up - 50,000 GPs 4 Round 2 Participants - 1125 GPs 8 Round 1 Participants - 560 GPs Participants in all rounds will receive a critique. Critiques for auditions may be brief, but they will be detailed in the following rounds. Donors: Jellyfish - 1 wk til Benidorm! The_Cavity has wisdom teeth!
