Review the Review! Please note that this is for publicly posted reviews, only.
Have you received useful advice, really good and helpful advice, from a reviewer? Would you like to give that person's work some recognition here? Because truly, a good review takes time, thought, and effort.
Have you received less than helpful advice, or incorrect edits, and want to set the record straight? Would you like to tell a reviewer how their review could have been more helpful and useful to you? (SEE GROUND RULES, below.)
You've come to the right place.
Now, before you begin, a few GROUND RULES:
NO "reviewer bashing." I don't want to hear "so and so is an ignorant @#$% who wouldn't know literature if it jumped up and bit her on the [insert suitably embarassing body part here]." The idea behind this forum is not to argue with a bad review, or bash a bad reviewer - it's the same idea that's behind giving any review in the first place. How can you help the reviewer (as this is also a form of writing) improve?
Feel free to set the record straight - if you feel that a review was not helpful, or was incorrect. But please do so with the same courtesy you expect from your reviewers. Review the review - NOT the reviewer.
NO "whining." I don't always like what I hear in reviews, either. I sometimes wonder if the reviewer even read the piece - they obviously didn't "get it." But step back and consider - before saying "so and so was just too dense to understand my complex thinking here" - could you have done a better job of writing and communicated your complex thinking more clearly?
DO make an effort to state what the reviewer did right if anything, just as we are all encouraged to do when reviewing any writer's work. Provide that motivation to keep doing it, and encourage others to adopt the practice.
Limit your comments here to the publicly posted reviews. Private reviews were made private for one reason or another, and I think everyone should respect that.
REMINDER: Every SUNDAY is "Reviewer Appreciation Day!" ! Let's get the word out - spread the good news - get some momentum behind the movement... today and every Sunday, let's take a few moments to show how much we love our reviewers!
