Electronic Media. E Books. Why not have a web site where the public can publish their books, screenplays and magazines and market them all over the world? Not only do they reach more people, but there is no need to print and post several bulky manuscripts. Such a scheme cannot save the whole world, but it will cut down the number of trees wasted, and be more convenient to the writers.

I then took the idea one step further. The Authors can sell their work and make money from it. With unlimited downloads, and a worldwide market, the potential for new writers is limitless. Not only this, but with the public reviewing the ideas published, we find out what the public wants to see, not what a major in English thinks we want. Good writers will get good reviews, which they can take to the commercial Publishers, Producers and Agents. Poor writers will receive feedback and criticism that may help them improve as writers.

As a writer of both manuscripts and poetry, I used to enter many poetry competitions. When the internet came along, more opportunities arose. However, most of the same rules applied. Some ran annually, some asked for high entry fees, some were restricted in content, type and style. All were judged by experts and all had static prizes. I thought I would change the whole context of poetry competitions.

In my competition, there are no age limits, no length limits, few contents limits and is open to any genre. Also, the public set the prize money, and they are the judges. How? Well, let’s say we have 5000 entries at 5 Euros per entry. Total monies raised is 25,000 Euros. 10% is the first prize, (2,500 Euros). 5% is the second prize (1,250 Euros). 2.5% is the third prize (625 Euros), and provided the total isn’t less than 5 Euros, the next 100 highest rated entries will win 2.5% divided by 100 (6.25 Euros). 20% prize money in total. As a further incentive to enter, 10% will go to an environmental charity, so if we make 25,ooo Euros, 2,500 Euros goes to charity. As a worldwide poetry competition running all year round, we expect more than 5000 entries every 2 months.

Let’s say a young man enters his poem into the competition. To stand a chance of winning, people need to read and rate his work, so he will advertise on the internet, in blogs, in e mails to friends, in live messaging, on his own personal web site, anywhere he can. Readers will read poems, and rate whether they liked it or not. After 2 months, the poet with the highest rating wins first prize, and so on. The next day, a new competition begins.

The publishing of manuscripts is free. As a guaranteed publisher, we will publish adult material, but we will charge only for this service, to discourage it, and to protect younger people from the content. The poetry competition is 5 Euros per entry. We only make money on the adult site and the poetry competition, as the primary goal of the site is to help promote new writers, and to help save the environment.
