Alone on Mother's Day
A girl misses her mother on Mother's day.
by idrozd

Underneath The Crescent Moon

Laura Banks was startled at Nick Keller’s sly grin. All she had done, was agree to an all seniors party. Why was he grinning like that? It didn’t fit the moment. Laura dis-regarded her thoughts and focused on what she was going to wear. Her friend, Molly Jacobson, asked, “what are you going to wear tonight?” Laura answered with suspicion in her voice, “Molly, why do you ask? What, you want to look prettier than me? I won’t tell you just so you can find something better to wear.” Molly’s face was ridden with shock and unbelief, and she backed away from Laura before finally running off. Laura thought to herself, “I can’t believe Molly, she always tries to one up me. I’ll show her and everyone tonight how awesome I am.”

Laura went home and she saw her door slightly open. Heart racing, she rushed inside and saw her mother. “Mom, are you alright? I saw the door open, someone might be in here hiding.” Laura’s mom replied, “Honey, there is no one here but me.” Laura wasn’t listening, she rushed throughout the house looking in closets and under beds, “mom, I know someone is here.” After some time of searching to no avail, Laura started getting ready. She contemplated on how the night would go, Nick of course would be there, and maybe the two of them could get together. Unless, Laura pondered, Nick was in it for the wrong reasons. He did have that crazy grin earlier today.

The party house loomed in the dark, lit only from the crescent moon which was an interesting color today; sort of a milky white with a reddish outline. Laura’s heart was racing. A shadow caught her eye; it was Nick and his grin. He was talking to Molly in secrecy. Laura thought to herself, “I knew it. No one wants me here. Nick had a sly grin earlier because he is seeing Molly, and Molly wanted to look prettier than me just to make sure I don’t receive any attention from Nick.” With that thought, Laura turned around and started running as if wild wolves were chasing her. The nearby woods started closing around her and Laura stumbled over some jutting tree roots and fell. Tears streaming down her face, wild thoughts crossing her mind, Laura was confused and dis-oriented when she saw her mother’s face.

“Mrs. Banks, Molly and I followed Laura into the woods after we saw her leaving the party” said Nick, “she looked upset and we didn’t want her to leave before having some fun.” Mrs. Banks stroked her daughter’s head gently and replied, “6 months ago, my daughter was diagnosed with paranoia.”

All of a sudden, everything made sense. Nick realized why his attempts to date Laura were always futile. Why Laura acted strange sometimes which resulted in everyone laughing most of the time. Molly realized why her friendship was always struggling and filled with grief and blame. They both looked at Laura with new expectations and feelings towards her. This wasn’t her fault; this was a mental condition that she couldn’t help. The four of them stood in mutual respect for quite some time on that spooky night, the one with the crescent moon, which was sort of milky white with a reddish outline.
