The Technology of Reading: Survey
How do you feel about e-books? Do you prefer old fashioned reading? Why or why not?

In one of my writing classes last semester, we talked briefly about how technology is changing and how it specifically how it adds a new dimension to the world of readers, books, and writers. Many people are against technology like the Amazon "Kindle" and Barnes an Nobles "Nook", while other people embrace this change and see it as a good thing.

Naturally this got me thinking and wondering: why? Why are people for this idea? Why are they against it? What do these new "computers" mean for traditional books? Does this change anything for the author?

I've already seen how one classmate uses her Kindle, and how my own sister treasures her Nook, but these facts alone are not enough. I have so many questions, but not enough answers to write the article I am envisioning.

That's where YOU come in! *Bigsmile*

Please take a moment to fill out the questions in this survey. Your feedback will help me to draw conclusions to the questions I'm trying to answer, and who knows? I may even quote YOU in my article! *Wink*

Thank you, dear WdC member, for taking the time to help me with my research. I really appreciate it! *bismile* Once I finish my article, I will post it to Writing.Com for everyone to read.

And remember--your answers will not be graded, and your opinion, no matter how "silly", counts! *Wink*

"The Technology of Reading: Survey" Questions
(R) denotes a required field.

You may submit your survey anonymously by checking the box to the left.

1.   Hopefully if you here on this site, you love to read, but how much of a reader are you? (R)

Avid. I'll read anything and everything I can get my hands on!
Obsessive. I read a lot, but I'm very genre/subject specific. I like what I like
Average. I like reading, but I don't read constantly
        I don't read much.

2.   If you answered "D", why don't you read much?

        I don't have time! I'm very busy!
        I don't like reading.
        I don't know...

3.   Which is your preferred method of reading for pleasure? (novels, short stories, etc...) (R)

        Hardcover books
        Paperback books
A book; I don't care if it's paperback or hardcover
        My Kindle
        My Nook

4.   How do you feel about e-book technology, like the Nook and Kindle? (R)

        I think it's a great idea!
        I think it's a bad idea...
        I don't care either way
        I don't know...

5.   Do you think that the Kindle and/or Nook is good for classroom use? (R)

Absolutely! If you have your books on your Kindle/Nook, then you don't have to carry as much
        No way! I don't like using a Kindle/Nook period!
        I don't know...

6.   If you think that e-reading is a good idea, which device do you prefer/think is more useful?

        The Amazon Kindle
        The Barnes and Nobles Nook
I don't know enough about either to say for certain

7.   What, in your own words, is your opinion of traditional, "page-by-page" reading? Is it the only way to read? Is it just more "comfortable" for you than E-books? Are you tired of it? (You don't have to answer these questions directly) (R)

8.   In your own words, how do you feel about the Kindle, the Nook, and/or other means of electronic reading? If you are in support of it, why? If you are against it, why? Have you ever used one of these devices? (R)

9.   Regardless of whether or not you support electronic reading, do you think it's going to change traditional book publishing in a drastic way? Do you think that traditional books will become obsolete, in the way that records did when CD's were invented? Does this change the process of writing a book any, and/or what it means to be a writer? (R)

10.   Lastly, is there anything that you would like to add that you think is relevant to this survey or can benefit my research? If so, feel free to say so! *Bigsmile* Thank you for your input!
