Theocracy vs. Secular Government
Informational survey of opinions concerning religious influences on national governments.

Hello. I am interested in researching opinions concerning how much influence we would like our world religions to have on our national laws, policies, and forms of government. It seems to be a pretty contemporary subject and one that most of us usually have strong feelings about, so here is your chance to express yourself. There are only five questions to work your way through. The first four have “canned” responses and the last one will allow you to cut loose and say what you want; be as lengthy as the text box allows. If you need more room e-mail me. Results will eventually be posted in my port.

If you are curious, like myself, participate and we will see what we find Smile Please do not identify yourself unless you are highly motivated and/or have specific questions you would like answered or qualified. Read on and have fun.

Through-out human history dominant churches and religious activists have exercised power and influence over governments and public law. England’s history of the ruling royalty being dominated by Christian religious doctrine, and in turn dominating and changing the doctrine, should be common knowledge to all that have completed at least eight years of public education. Most recently the world has been shown the lives of nations as dominated by Islam in the middle-eastern countries of Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

One common characteristic of a theocratic nation is the aggressive enforcement of specific doctrinal laws of morality, whether they be compulsory acceptance of the dominant religion or public exercise of punishments for violators. In the middle ages English citizens who did not accept the Christian Church, at the least would be accused of being Infidel and at the worst accused of being in league with a Devil. Death and torture could be the sentence for anyone accused of devil worship by the church in the middle ages. Currently in the middle east, Islamic punishment of the citizenry is often carried out in public sometimes following the old biblical rule of an eye for an eye.

Theocratic national rule has been common in human history and still hangs on in many developing and third world countries. In this country, America, there are a variety of expressions and publications in the public arena that debate and even demand a stronger influence of religious doctrine. Particularly we hear this in debates concerning prayer in public places, such as schools, when there are strong statements that declare “this is a Christian Nation”.
