I drew these characters when I was tossing around story ideas about a group of ETs who were descendents of Atlanteans who returned to Earth after many generations out in the galaxy. Their ancestors were genetically engineered to be able to live underwater when Atlantean scientists learned Atlantis was doomed to collapse beneath the sea.
