"Flowers in the Fields"
A poem for a lonely child

When the lonely child came out to play,
she saw a little flower
all yellow and smiling
in the morning of the day
where I heard her say;
“Will you come home with me”?

But me, “I’m the flower in a cage”
that no one can see
in the cracks of the tiles
where nothing grows,
only a weed
to keep me company.

Then with good intentions
and the hope of taking me home
the lonely child bends down
to take hold of me,
but falls and scrapes her knee
on the tiles supporting me.

In tears, I hear her say
“Please forgive me”
I need to take you home
so that you can play with me
and be a family
on our own.

To you who are lost and lonely
looking for your family,
come and dream with me
that together one day,
we will be God’s divine creation!
"The flowers in the fields".
