Promise In The Mist
Deer from poem

Cool, clear blue water
Yet, what did it matter?
Mist rising at dawn
I can't help but yawn.

Up before anyone else,
Just to have time to myself;
Walking to the end of the pier
I caught site of a deer.

Wounded she lay down
I thought sure she'd drown.
No, you can't go this way
I heard myself say.

Racing to the water's edge
I made her a solemn pledge,
If she didn't make it until dawn,
I'd care for her fawn.

Today I shed a tear
For it's been a year
My heart full of woe,
I bid her go.

My promise fulfilled
I feel a sudden chill
As mist rises at dawn
I say goodbye to the fawn.

Sipping hot coffee
Taking time for me
Sitting at the end of the pier
Gazing at the water so clear.
