Sam and Alex watched their friend warily during class; both of them feared their superficial friend might do something to embarrass herself in front of everyone. However, Clover remained composed, slumped over on her desk and not saying anything. First and second period ended quickly and the three friends left for the cafeteria. They waited in line to get their food, spending the time looking over then menu as they waited.
“I’m sure glad the school board got the cafeteria to start serving healthy food. If I had to spend another year eating caned slop I was going to be sick,” Alex grimaced as she thought about the old school lunch menu, which had consisted mostly of greasy, unhealthy food.
“Yep, nothing like a big, green salad,” Clover said without any enthusiasm. She looked warily at the menu as she stepped closer to the lunchlady. The thought of munching salad sounded awful and as she looked over then menu, her eyes lingered on the unhealthy, greasy food.
“What’ll you have?” The lunchlady gruffly asked Clover as the person in front of her ordered. Getting her head together, Clover looked uncertainly up at the menu.
“Like, I think I’ll have a salad.” The lunchlady nodded and was about to call for the next person in line to order, when Clover suddenly piped up with an added request.
“Hold the croutons. I think I’d like a dinner roll instead.” Clover creased her brow and thought more about what she wanted to eat. “And substitute the diced ham with a beef patty and melt the shredded cheese on top of it and put it all inside the dinner roll with barbeque sauce.”
The lunchlady blinked at the odd request. “So basically you want a cheese burger?”
“Yep!” Clover said with anticipation. Her stomach added it’s own two cents by growling loudly. “Better make it three burgers.”
Alex and Sam watched Clover get her meal with astonished faces. They had never seen Clover ordered that much food. Clover ate like a bird, getting full after usually a few bites. The last time they saw anything remotely like this was when Clover was gorging herself on Bittersweets deserts. They rushed to get their orders, which were all salads, and joined Clover at a deserted table to see her already working on her second burger.
“You guys were right. I shouldn’t be so insecure about the little things. I’m still hot. I’m still fashionable. I shouldn’t go all cry baby over a little blubber,” Clover said between noisily biting into her second burger. Spittle, bun and ground beef sprayed from her mouth towards her friends. Little pieces of saliva drenched food dripped from Alex and Sam’s face as they watched Clover try to cram, the whole burger into her mouth. She was soon on her third one, eating it as ravenously as the ones before it.
“So I’ve been a little bit more hungry then normal, big deal. All it’ll take is a little exercise and all be back to normal.” Clover had eaten her burger in practically one bite. Alex and Sam went pale as they saw the nearly whole burger move down Clovers long elegant neck. Clover sighed contently as she leaned back and patted her stomach, which now looked slightly pudgy.
“Clover maybe you should…” Sam began to say before a much louder voice spoke up. It was Clover’s stomach again and it was louder then before. Groaning, Clover got to her feat.
“I think I’m going to skip last period and go home and take a nap. I’m feeling a little strange.”
“Clover, if your not feeling good, maybe you should see a doctor?” Sam suggested, but spoke too late. Clover was already walking away. She walked woozily out of the cafeteria, never looking back at her friends.
“What’s going on?” Alex asked Sam who had nothing to say back. She had no clue what was going on, but eventually she’d find out. Something was up with Clover, all that mattered was finding out what it was before Clover hurt herself.
