Violet was silent because she was thinking about the effect being a super hero had on her life now and how much it would effect her once she grew up. Like the hero in the movie, would she have to give up love to protect them from villains that might want to hurt her through her loved one? Was she destined to make the sacrifice of her life, love and existence to help the helpless? These questions and more went through her head, consuming her every thought. That was what Violet was thinking, Dash on the other hand was thinking something not quite so deep.
“I wish I could climb walls and shoot spider spunk out of my wrists!” Dash whined. After seeing Spiderman swing around Manhattan, he thought that spider powers were the coolest.
“But you have super speed,” Violet dryly retorted, while looking warily at her simple-minded sibling. She was holding her youngest brother Jak-Jak in her arms, making sure not to startle the infant. The last thing she wanted was the baby to transform and cause a scene in front of everybody.
“Please,” Dash scoffed, “Super speed is so old school. Spider powers are where it’s at now.”
“Well maybe you’ll develop them when you hit puberty,” Violet told Dash snidely. She was a little grateful for her brother’s selfishness because it took her mind off the feelings she’d gotten during the movie. She always thought having powers meant fighting crime half the day and being normal the other half, but apparently separating her personal life from her costume life was not going to be that simple. Thinking about how she was going to live two lives made Violet feel sick inside. She was barely a teen, but some how she had this huge problem that she could do nothing about.
“What you talking about?” Dash grumbled confusedly. “Why would I get spider powers when I reach puberty.”
Violet smirked softly, trusting her brother’s ignorance to distract her from other problems. “Don’t you ever listen to mom and dad? We start off with one or two simple powers when we’re born, but when we reach puberty, new powers manifest. Mom and dad have gone over this dozens of times during our early training, haven’t you ever paid any attention to what they say?”
“Kinda,” Dash mumbled, suddenly unable to look his sister in the face. “I did pay attention when they told me how to run at two hundred miles, after that I kind of zoned out.”
“Figures,” Violet said while rolling her eyes.
“Hey, don’t treat me like I’m dumb!” Dash huffed and glared at his sister. So he didn’t pay attention all the time, it wasn’t his fault that everyone else was so slow. He had places to be and things to do, if everyone else wasn’t a slowpoke, he wouldn’t have so much time listening. “So, what kind of powers could I get when I hit puberty?”
“I’m not sure, no ones completely the same. Dad gained super invincibility when he hit puberty, before that he was just super strong, and mom gained the ability to stretch her insides when she matured.”
“Oh yeah, mom’s inside and out stretch. That’s kind of lame, hope I get a better power then that.”
Dash crossed his small arms over his chest and thought about his mother’s weird power to hold huge objects inside her. When he had been younger, he had thought it was kind of neat. She could fit whole watermelons inside her mouth and carry over a dozen in her stomach without a single one showing. But compared to the other powers in the house like invisibility, super strength and super speed. Being able to hold huge amount of stuff inside your body seemed not too impressive.
Violet didn’t say anything, her face had gone blank, like her mind was somewhere else. Dash waved a hand in front of her face and called her name. “Violet? Earth to Violet. Hello.”
“Huh?” Violet shook her head to get the cobwebs out. Jak-Jak giggled as his sister head shook from side to side. Back to her senses, Violet looked at Dash, who stared at her with interest. Grinning distantly, Violet answered her brother curtly to get him off her back.
