Alex Mack was just an average kid until an accident changed her life. Upon walking home from school one day, she wound up nearly hit by a truck, which in turn caused a barrel of unknown chemicals to spill out and splatter all over. Alex managed to get away before the driver could get a good look at her, and given her Tomboy appearance, the dummy couldn’t even tell if she was a boy or a girl.
More importantly however, once she got home, Alex and her sister Annie, along with her best friend, Ray, found that the accident had given her incredible powers. She was telekinetic, could shoot electrical energy out of her body and was now able to morph into a puddle of water.
It didn’t take a genius to figure this out, but Alex’s genius sister made it perfectly clear that they had to keep this a secret, since whatever had happened to her meant that the Chemical Plant would turn her into some kind of experiment. Ever since then, while those guys have been on the lookout for the ‘kid’ with the powers, Alex has been living life as a not so average teenager, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t still have life.
“This sucks.” Of course, that’s not to say that she’s particularly happy with her life. Surprisingly, living in fear of being put in a test tube loses its charm after a while. She liked having these powers, but nowadays she was actually missing being that normal kid that no one knew. The only bright side she could see in all this was how much her sister loved her abilities, but that wasn’t exactly doing much for her.
“What sucks?” asked a voice that startled Alex. She looked up to see her crush, Scott, actually sitting down with her to have lunch. Alex happily greeted him, but then realized the full implications that could come from this one simple act, asking him “What are you doing? Isn’t Jessica….or Kelly going to be mad with you?” Alex felt kinda dumb for not knowing who Scott was with, but it was honestly hard to keep track. Why did all of his girlfriends turn out to be the fattest bitches?
“Well fortunately she’s not here today, plus I like to think that I can just sit down with a friend at my own free will.” He joked, and Alex giggled as well “Yeah.” As she smiled, it really set in that she was THIS close to the guy she most desired, and now she had no clue what to say. Fortunately, Scott spoke next “So what’s up Alex? You look kinda down.”
“Oh it’s nothing, I just…sigh…I’m just feeling really sick of this town, you know?” Alex started, obviously she wouldn’t get into the real reason why she’d love to move away, but it was true that Paradise Valley wasn’t exactly the coolest place to grow up. You take her out of the equation and it may qualify for one of the most boring places in California, if not the country “There’s nothing to do here. You could pick any other place out there, and I bet we’d all be a lot happier there.”
“Yeah, I hear the weather in Angel Grove is lovely this time of year.” Scott joked and he and Alex laughed. Okay so not every other town was all sunshine and rainbows, but he could understand where she was coming from. Still, Scott had to speak up.
“But really Alex, I don’t know if moving would be such a good idea. I mean hey, come on, if that happened, I wouldn’t get to see you anymore.” That smile and that look in his eyes made Alex’s heart beat so fast. There could be an earthquake right now and she wouldn’t even notice. Nothing could pull from gazing at this cute and very nice boy…save for the sudden wooziness she felt.
“Alex?” Scott watched as she grabbed the side of her head. She tried to tell him what she was feeling, but as soon as she tried to stand up, she lost her footing and fell “Alex!” Everyone in the cafeteria all turned their heads to the unconscious girl on the floor, and as Scott rushed to her side, he yelled for someone to get the nurse.
“Now Alex honey, are you sure don’t want to see a doctor?” her mom asked as she led her lightheaded second child into their home. With her dad and Annie nearby, all of them were naturally concerned for her, but for obvious reasons, the last place Alex wanted to be was a doctor’s office.
“No mom, really, I’m fine.” Alex tried to reassure her, even though she still looked really out of it. Fortunately, she had her genius prodigy sister right there to back her up and who took her by the arm “I’m sure she’s fine, mom and dad. Just in case though, I’ll be watching Alex like a hawk and make sure she stays that way. Come on Alex.” With no ifs, ands, or buts about it, Annie whisked Alex away, leaving her parents a bit surprised, but at least assured that she was in capable hands. George, their father, added “She really does lover her sister.” Sisterly love was such a wonderful thing.
Meanwhile, now that they were safely inside the garage, Annie was finally able to use her genius intellect to aid her possibly sick, super powered sister. “Okay, what happened?” she asked, and Alex answered “I don’t know, I was just talking to Scott and then I felt so weak and-” Her explanation was halted however when she and Annie spotted that Alex’s skin was glowing yellow. Now this was truly bizarre; not that it hadn’t happened before, but it was primarily only back when she first got her powers, and since then this only happened, say when she had the last time she got a cold and it screwed around with her powers. So whatever was wrong with Alex, it had to be serious.
“Oh no, Annie, what’s happening to me?” Alex was really scared now. Right now she’d gladly take a typical day in Angel Grove over being just moments away from being dissected like a frog. Before she could go off the deep end though, Annie kneeled to her sister and held her by the arms “Don’t worry, okay? Just calm down. I’m going to run some tests and I promise you, we will figure this out.” Alex saw such assurance in Annie’s eyes. No matter what was happening, she could always count on her big sister to help her through it. Alex nodded and said “Okay,” and Annie gave her sister a hug.
A few hours later, Alex was sitting on her bed and actually trying to study to keep her mind off things. This proved to be not helpful since all it did was remind her how much she hated studying, but fortunately that was when Annie walked in.
“Well?” Alex asked, tossing the book aside. She was getting an unsure vibe from her sister, but before she could assume anything, Annie spoke “Okay, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is, I know what’s wrong with you and it can be treated.”
“Oh….then what’s the bad news?” Alex really couldn’t see anything that would ruin this, but unfortunately, Annie did “Let me get to that. The skin samples that I took from you showed that your cells are actually being overloaded by the very power you now exert. I must be a delayed reaction from the exposure to the chemical. This means that if something isn’t done, they’ll all become unstable and you’ll literally fall apart. However, I did find something really interesting, check this out.”
Holding up a specimen under glass, Annie moved over to the microscope in the room. She had one in the garage and where she sleeps, doesn’t everybody? Alex was naturally terrified by the notion that her powers were making her cells like an unstable game of Jenga, but if Annie had found a cure, well that was the only thing keeping her quiet right now. Her sister let her sit in front of the microscope while she slid the specimen into view, and what Alex saw next was both good and bad.
“These are you cells; notice how they keep on trembling and glowing, but watch what happens when I do this.” Annie pulled out what looked like a tiny turkey baster and squirted it onto the sample, adding that “Giving them some organic matter turns out to be just what the doctor ordered.” As Alex saw, she was right. Upon contact with whatever that stuff was, her cells absorbed it like sponges with water, and they became still once more. They looked bigger than before, but they were stable.
“Great! So all I have to do is….what exactly?” Alex really didn’t care for all the confusion that had come her way lately, but she had to make sure she understood the cure properly. Annie looked like she was unwilling to talk for once, but after rubbing the back of her head, she came clean “Well as you saw, the only way for you to get better will be for you to consume a large amount of organic matter.”
“You mean?” Alex paused as her eyes widened and her sister unfortunately nodded “Alex, say goodbye to your figure.”
