This choice: Training goes smoothly and you soon join X and Zero | Go Back

Chapter 28: The Beating of the Million Drums   (ID #1252430)
an addition by: Aerodeth  More by this author

Anyways, the two of you shook hands and you sensed loads of vibes coming from this rookie about to train a rookie. His data mostly translated to being relieved that he was finally getting the opportunity to show authority to a new guy. Imagining how hard it must be trying to step up the big boys like X and Zero when youre the new guy, you treated him with respect and allowed him to stroke his ego as he showed you the ropes. He taught you a variety of things like how to properly shoot, infiltrate with stealth, disarm bombs, and deal with hostage negotiations. Already being in a pretty powerful reploids body means training didnt take long at all.

You picked up a lot of shocked and surprised vibes. He couldnt believe it. You learned the same basics in minutes that HE struggled at for months! Jealous vibes began to arise.
You pretended you didnt notice them and gave him the military salute!

"Any more lessons, Lieutenant Axl sir?" you obediently addressed your commanding officer.
His eye twitched and his face looked like he wanted to sweat, "N...no... w-we covered them all. Uh, looks like you passed with flying colors, uh... good job!" He gave you the thumbs and put on a fake smile but his data said he felt kinda miserable. Damn newguy upstaged him.
"See?" Iris was smiling, "I told you he was an extraordinary human being. The Maverick Hunters deserve nothing less." Data involving the mason jar kinda faded away... and was later replaced with a small canary cage! You tried to ignore her thoughts and turned your attention back to Axl.

"Thank you, Lieutenant Axl sir!" you bowed humbly trying to show him how much you appreciate him, "I couldnt have done it without your fine brilliant teaching!"

"Yeah whatever," he muttered, "let's go see the commanders." And off to see X and Zero you went. As the three of you walked, you scanned around the computer rooms. No humans in sight. Just robots. Lots and lots of robots. Doing practical stuff like moving crates, talking on headsets, pushing buttons, scribbling, all that important stuff. Each bursting with lots and lots of data in their robotic minds. They data was like a crowd filling a room talking nonstop to one another.

Granted, most of it was mild and sometimes stupid, some of the data you translated kinda weirded you out.
You see two armored soldiers chatted friendly chat amongst themselves while their data read that they HATED eachother and hoped Sigma brutally murders in the next mission. A researcher in a labcoat wrote on his notepad while his data read that he was planning to forge false information to screw over his co-worker so that HE could get that promotion he so rightfully deserves. A fat yellow suited reploid with a football helmet was pacing around a corner, while his data was whining about how nobody understands and they'll all soon pay for pushing him around like they do! A pink haired navigator had a concerned worried look on her face as she desperately tried to talk to somebody over her headset into not killing himself. Noble, but her data revealed that she was fed up with talking to him cuz her shift was supposed to end 10 minutes ago. 'If youre gonna kill yourself, just do it already! I just wanna go home!' That's what you read.

The purple haired girl with her covering herself seemed to be reading technical information to her partner over her headpiece, but her data kept reading 'ZERO' over and over again. 'What Zero's doing. Where's Zero at? When do I get to partner up with Zero? What exactly does he see in that Maverick-infested bitch anyway? Surely it aint her chest size!' You really dont want to listen to this but her data is SHOUTING it! Hell's bells, even the illusions you and Rufus were having were less creepy and annoying! Youre kinda missing the 'He Who Walks Behind' vibes now!

'I bet this loser cant shapeshift like I can!' read Axl's data! You turned your head back to him and woulda gave him an odd stare if you had a face under the helmet (does Vile?)
'Pizza and... what else? Ah! Coke! Humans love coke!' read Iris's data!
"I cant wait to be human again," you sighed. 'Neither can I' read Axl's data. 'SHUT UP!' read YOUR data.

"Colonel, I am not asking you. I'm DEMANDING you to release Rufus at once!" you overheard Zero shouted from outside the room you were about to enter. He was shouted to the image of Colonel on the multiple screens. The same screens you remember him chatting with Ms. Mason Jar on.
"Your orphan Hunter has violated Rule 24 in the Regional Code of Conduct and is charged with espionage," Iris's big surly brother on the tvs replied, "he is a spy and will be treated as such."
"He's not a spy!" Zero snapped at him, "he just went off on his own again. He... he does that a lot."

"How shameful of you to cover for him," the Colonel sternly replied, "if he were one of us infiltrating the Hunters base, you would declare us terrorists." The vibes that emitted from him were hardened and less simplistic than all the other reploids. Probably cuz he learns his emotions in check. Too bad he didnt do the same with his data. He's got quite a grudge with Zero and strongly believes his sister is too good for him (as does most overprotective brothers). He also thought Zero was too soft on humans and thinks of him to be nothing but a tool for their personal use.
'Uh dude?' you thought to yourself, 'this is a videogame. He IS a tool for our personal use!'

"Brother... PLEASE tell me you didnt hurt him," Iris pleaded with him, although her data read 'Not until I do!'
The Colonel's eyes widened at the sight of his sister... vibes of anger and annoyance developed from his CPU. His nostrils flared just like his data.
"Iris!" he gritted his teeth, "what in the hell are you doing in the Maverick Hunter's base?! Youre supposed to be submitting your intel to Berkana!" ...Oy. He said the B-word.
"I had planned to," Iris spoke up, "but I was attacked... by Sigma."

"Sigma? You must be mistaken. Sigma is gone."

"Brother I saw him with my own eyes!" Iris explained, "I saw him talking to the General about-"
"IRIS!!" oh dear. Anger vibes have intensified, "dont you dare speak ill of the General like that!"
“But… but brother!”
“Sister… I’m going to pretend that you did not make such an outrageous accusation against our glorious leader.”

“Tsk, you trust the word of the Fuhrer over your own little sister?” Oh snap! Zero cut into the family dispute! Not that you could blame him, but this event triggered a data overload! Bad data was escalating from all sides. You could hear raging thoughts ranging from ‘Who does this piece of trash think he is speaking to me like that?’ to ‘Cant believe a dickhead like this is related to her!’ Just like humans.

“Zero, please dont speak to him like that,” Iris lightly scolded.
“The guy flat out ignored you!” Zero snapped, “you gonna defend him?!”
“Zero, calm down!”
“Yes, Zero. Do relax your tone,” Colonel replied, “we recall the havoc that occurred LAST time you didnt."
MURDER DEATH KILL intel emitted from Zero after hearing that! "OH YOU DID NOT JUST-" Zero whipped out his saber, ready to slice the monitor in half! Thankfully, X and Axl were there to hold him back!

"Zero stop!" and yet the intel magically disappeared after Iris's voice. Too bad the 'bird cage' intel still didnt! Despite the damn sounds of multiple data flowing through your brain, there was absolute silence.

"Iris," Colonel broke the silence, "return to the base, immediately."
"But-"
"Return. Now." *BZzzzt!* and the connection was gone. End of conversation.

That was Iris's cue. "I have to go."
"Iris, wait! You shouldnt-"
"Please dont make this harder than it already is," why she used THAT kind of wording, not even the data could translate! But man, was it a huge strike to Zero's ego. Iris left through the door as Zero felt the pain of his heart breaking. Crash landing, top gun.
"Dude..." was all Axl could mutter at the moment.

Worse even, Rufus is still a POW. You dont know how long that's gonna last. He may be a looney, but he's an essential looney. Plus... it'd be like abandoning a part of you if you leave him to die! You gotta get in out of there before God Only Knows gets to him!

"Uh, I hate to change the subject," X spoke out, "but what are we gonna do with him?" Oh right. You.
"He's already completed training," Axl explained.

"Already?!" Zero got back up on his feet. Fresh data flowed from his CPU, "he's only been here for a few hours!"
"I know," Axl shrugged, "And he passed with flying colors. I... got nothing else to teach him." You scratched the back of the head and smiled... if you had a face under your helmet!

"Hm," Zero looked you right in the eye. You picked up multiple thoughts... he must be thinking about what he wants to do with you. Sadly, you couldnt decode the data. Too well encripted, perhaps?

You waited... and waited.

Finally, he answered...
