Not one of them even twitched as pools of blood seeped out of their wounds and formed lakes around their shattered corpses. What was most disturbing about the scene was that even with their cores breached and their life force dwindled away, the mad smiles still gleamed with predatory lunacy. But none of this mattered to Kawaru or Shinji, two of these sinister demon harpies were still standing and that was two to many. They both carried the grey replicas of the lance of Longinus like the Roman guards for so long ago that had taken the life of Christ. These creatures had no longing to live, they had no will of their own, and they would throw down their lives at the beckon of their God fearing masters. However, just because they were willing to die, didn’t mean that they were just ready to throw themselves towards absolute death. Their eyeless heads swayed as the stood at a standstill in front of Kawaru.
Shinji asked as he felt through his connection that the Evas were not moving, “why aren’t they attacking?”
“I would like to believe that they have gained wills of their own, but I fear that they are trying to use their artificial souls to come up with a way to stop me,” Kawaru said gravely. Bird like clicking was coming from the two white Eva’s as they seemed to try to communicate with on another. Kawaru couldn’t know if they were keeping an eye on him because he could see no eyes on their misshapen faces.
“Why do you want to believe that they have wills of their own?” Shinji asked one of the millions of questions that he had to Kawaru.
“I pity them. They maybe abominations before the eyes of God, but they are still my brethren, my bastard brethren. They have never known the touch of the lord of the joy of freedom or the rapture of being in love.” Shinji blushed at the last one, he knew who Kawaru was referring to when he talked about his loved one.
“I can only pray that these false Gods one day find their way to the Silver City, so their souls can be cleansed and they can rest.”
“But didn’t you say they had fake souls?” Shinji had seen Kawaru so ruthlessly destroy the other Eva’s without a sign of remorse or conscious. He didn’t have to think for a second before he ripped the monstrosities into pieces.
“That is the saddest part of all. Their souls are false enough to keep them from ever getting to the end of the afterlife, but they are real enough to send them somewhere in between when they die. Now we must talk about this late, the Eva’s are getting ready to combat us.” The chattering had stopped and the Eva’s were crotched down in a pouncing position as they careful wielded their lances. It was the white Eva on the left that struck first. He jumped up into the air with the lance of Longinus held up like an executioners axe. He was trying to chop Kawaru in half, but the last angel would have none of that. Activating his AT field at maximum power to deflect the deadly weapon, but just as it was about to touch his AT field, the lance feel numbly from the Eva’s hands. Now with both hands free, the Eva grabbed Kawaru in a bear hug and held fast and strong. With both hands pinned to his side, Kawaru had no way to get the huge beast off except with his AT Field. As he powered his AT field to deal with the Eva in the front, the other Eva snuck up behind him and readied the lance of Longinus. If possible, his insane toothy smile widened as he jerked back, then threw the lance with all of its ungodly power. Kawaru’s eyes might have been on the Eva in front of him, but Shinji’s senses picked up the Eva’s attack.
“LOOK OUT!” Shinji screamed as he tried to send a mental picture of the attack to Kawaru. At the last instant Kawaru wrenched back narrowly avoiding the tip of the lance. The Eva that had been holding him was not so lucky. Flying over Kawaru’s shoulder, the lance pierced the long neck of the white Eva. The Eva was thrown forward with the lance still lodged in its windpipe. The lance lost its velocity and landed in the soft ground of NERV’s woodland area. Free of one Eva, Kawaru turned his attention to the one that had tried to get him from behind. Not giving Kawaru another second to think, the Eva ran at him with its fists clenched and mouth open in a primal scream. Kawaru activated his AT field at maximum power and struck the Eva squarely where it’s stomach should have been. His AT field focused on his arm and with a grunt of strength, his fist pushed past the armor and into the soft underbelly of his enemy. With the Eva’s intestines surrounding his hand, all it took was one mighty shove and Kawaru pulled his fist through the stomach, smashing past the ribcage and connected directly with the care located in the middle of it’s chest. With the care breached, the Eva fell limp and collapsed off of Kawaru’s fist onto the ground, dead. Kawaru looked at his blood stained fist. His entire hand up to his wrist was pure crimson; it dripped of his hand near his feet steadily as it cooled on his hand. Like in a daze, Kawaru turned to the Eva with the fake lance of Longinus stuck in its neck. It wiggled and squirmed on the lance like a fish caught on a hook. Calmly he walked to the downed beast with no sentiment on his face at all. He looked at it with a careful eye; it was unable to move and would probably stay stuck to the lance until it cleaved its neck clear in half. Kawaru put his finger lazily on the middle of the Eva’s chest, he had lost count of the number of the creature and some how that saddened him. He should have at least remembered the name of something before he destroys it. With the last of his AT field, he pushed out his energy into the center of the Eva’s chest. When the core was cracked, it made a sound that reminded Kawaru of glass shattering. Nothing remained alive on what remained of the forest outside of NERV HQ except the massive form of Kawaru and the tiny body of Shinji on his tongue. With the enemy defeated and no one left to fight, Shinji was released from Kawaru’s mouth and placed by the giant’s feet.
He looked around him at the mountains of shattered Eva bodies and said, “Horrible.”
“But necessary Shinji, but necessary.” Nothing more was said, as they looked at the destruction and death that humanity’s desire for immortality had caused. Then suddenly, Kawaru collapsed to one knee.
“Kawaru!” Shinji screamed at seeing the giant Angel fall to his knees.
“My AT field has been so weakened, that I don’t think I can move,” he gasped out feeling the effect of over working himself.
“ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL!” The voice boomed from outside HQ and Shinji immediately recognized the Sultry but sweet voice speaking.
“Misato!” Shinji cried in happiness. He had been afraid for her safety when he went with Kawaru. Hearing her voice was so reassuring and calming that it managed to put a smile on his face even though he was surrounded by so much death.
The communication continued, “DUE IN NO SMALL PART TO THE HELP OF THE GIANT HUMAN ANGEL NAMED KAWARU, ALL ENEMY COMBATANTS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED!”
“You hear that Kawaru, we won!” Shinji smiled up at Kawaru, but he did not return the smile. His face was screwed into a grim frown as he awaited Misato to continue.
“BUT NOTHING IS ALL RIGHT! THE UN HAS LAUNCHED SEVERAL FIGHTER PLANES CARRYING N2 MINES WITH ENOUGH POWER TO BLOW ALL OF TOKYO-3 OFF THE MAP! THIS IS THE END PEOPLE, I’M SORRY SHINJI.” The last part came out in a wail as the communication went dead. Shaking and with tears blinding his vision, Shinji looked up into Kawaru’s big red eyes and saw no surprise in those giant rosy orbs.
“I told you to run away Shinji,” was all Kawaru said as he looked up into the sky for the coming planes. His AT Field had been used up and he couldn’t protect himself or Shinji. All he could do was wait for the end.
“Kawaru,” Shinji said with steel in his voice. “Don’t regret anything I’ve done today. I don’t regret meeting you, I don’t regret coming into battle with you and I don’t regret falling in love with you.”
“I know,” that would be the last thing Kawaru said as the fighter planes launched the N2 mines. Shinji closed his eyes and his last thought of Kawaru and the warmth he had given him in his soul. How such a feeling had made up for the years of neglect and made him feel alive again. The world had seemed like such a cold place before meeting Kawaru and finding out about the joy of unbridled love and compassion. In the time that he had Known Kawaru, he had truly been alive.
Then whiteness filled his vision….
