A first Nadia thought it was a car or train that was making the mechanical sounds. She had never seen or heard a plane before, but Jean with his years of technological work, recognized the sound immediately.
“What is that?” Was the only question Nadia could think of asking.
“It’s a plane and a low flying one by the sounds of it. I have no idea why an aircraft would be swooping around here?” Planes were expensive and hard to build; Jean had only met a dozen people in France who even knew how to get one off the ground. Whoever was up there was ether wealthy or had a talented engineer.
“I hope they go away soon, the sound is real irritating,” Nadia commented. Before Jean could reply, the sound intensified ten fold and Jean was tossed around as Nadia hit the ground, hard. Jean was bounced into the far right wall and slide back down to the edge of the stomach.
“Nadia, what happened?” Jean screamed as he tried to pick himself up of the heaving fleshy ground beneath him.
What had happened, was that after telling Jean how annoying the plane was, the plane had swooped down over her head. It had come so close that Nadia could have sworn she felt something brush the tip of her hair. Before she could be decapitated, she hit the ground to avoid the deadly aircraft. Just as the plane was heading back into the skies, Nadia spotted red hair in the seat behind the pilot. There was only one person she could think of with that shade of hair, that wanted to hurt her, Grandis!
“It’s that redhead that tried to grab me before. She’s got a plane now and she’s trying to kill me!” Nadia hyperventilated as she saw the plane circling overhead.
Jean cursed silently at the persistent woman. Again, Nadia was in danger and he was stuck giving her directions. He might not be the hero type, but when it came to Nadia, he would willingly thrust himself into danger for his loved one. He bit his lower lip as he tried to think of a way to stop the plane attack. Running away would be futile because the plane could follow them all over Paris. No police were in sight of Nadia and what could they do about an attacking plane. It would take too long to get back to the circus. They wouldn’t be in trouble if Nadia hadn’t run of to the empty park?
“Eureka!” Jean exclaimed as an idea popped into his head.
“Nadia, run beneath a copse of trees and wait for the plane to strike,” Jean explain quickly. If this plan was to work, then Nadia had to do this as fast as possible.
“But the plane will get me.”
“You just have to trust me, it will work.”
“But Jean…”
“You trust me, right?” Nadia went silent and she didn’t need another second to think about it. Jean trusted her inside her mouth and trusted her enough to ditch his old life and come with her, maybe it was time for her to show the same faith.
“Okay Jean, hold on.” Then she was off, her feet kicked at the ground as she speed towards the nearest patch of trees. She reached the first tree and gasped for breath, it wasn’t the running that had taken her breath, it was the fear of that machine running her down as she ran. She looked up in time to see the plane come barreling strait towards her. Past the spinning blades, she saw the demented look in Grandis’s eyes. Nadia closed her eyes and shielded her face with both hands. Then the sound of something crashing into something else filled Nadia’s ears. After the crash, silence filled the woodland area, but was broken by a loud string of female curses. Opening her eye, Nadia saw no plane. Not knowing where the machine had done off to, Nadia glanced upwards and did a double take.
“When we get down, your dead, circus girl!” Grandis screamed from inside her trapped plane. She tried to get out of her seat, but a branch had her pinned down. The entire plane had crashed into the branches of the tree where Nadia had been hiding. The undergrowth of the tree was holding up the wings, while its propeller spun fruitlessly. Nadia took a good look at the trapped plane, and then she couldn’t hold it in anymore.
“”Hahaaahaaaahaaaa!’ She laughed. Hitting her leg because of the comedic sight above her. Grandis became more enraged by the laughter and tried to push the branch away, but she lacked the strength and leverage to do it.
“By your laughter, I’d say my plan worked,” Jean said with a hint of pride in his work.
“Brilliant Jean, just brilliant.” Nadia wiped the tears away from laughing so hard and started back to the circus.
“You were going to say something Jean?” The humor died in Nadia’s voice. If Jean decided to stay in France, she wouldn’t stop him, but she was sure that her night was going to be a tearful one. Jean had become a part of her life today and to lose him would be like suffer the loss of a part of her soul.
“Well, I can’t very well leave a beautiful woman like you in dangers way. I’ll stay with you and protect you from all the jewel thiefs on the world.” Nadia heard all and when he was done talking, she jumped into the air in excitement. Jean was tossed around his organic home, but he understood Nadia’s excitement. He felt just as adrenalized as her.
