This choice: Tabitha calls a specialist. | Go Back

Chapter 7: Mary Anne   (ID #581385)
an addition by: Jack Hawk  More by this author

Anxiety rushed through Tabitha as she threw the tape measure across the room. A loud noise rang through her small home, and she heard John ask about the commotion from the bedroom. She answered back, "Oh nothing honey, just go back to bed." Wow, had her voice gotten that loud, it barely took her any effort to speak with such boom. Panic was beginning to build. Frantically she searched for a phone, without much thought actually, as if it were more of a reaction to panic. As she grasped the now tiny phone in her hand, she had difficulty pushing the buttons, but with patients managed. 913-269...no wait that's John phone, oh dear in such a mood she was so caught up in reactions that she lost track of thought. Pushing herself up against the wall, and taking a deep breath, she thought out the situation. She didn't want to tell John, not just yet, but who to go to? Her underwear still clinged onto her body, but it was suffocating her skin. One thing was for certain, she needed a new pair of clothes. Silly though, where would she find anything her size, and even then, what if she continues to grow? Who was she fooling? Clothes? She has much more serious problems to think about than clothes. But wait that's it! Quickly she reached for the phone that had fallen between her now massive legs and dialed in a new number, this time with thought.

"Hello, Mary Anne?" she spoke as soft as she could into the shrinking phone.

"And who is this?" the phone questioned back.

"It's Tabitha."

"Tabitha? Tabitha? I don't know a single Tabitha."

"You know you're old college roommate."

"No, I have never roomed with a Tabitha; such a silly name like that I would remember."

With a sigh she replied, "You know Tabby Cat."

Suddenly the phone came to life, "Tabby Cat? Oh darling it's been ages, when did you change your name to Tabitha, where did you get that name - "

"- my parents-"

"Such a silly name, but enough about you, I'm fine great, meet a couple of guys, dumped them all, too wimpy, too girly, or too dumb, I don't date dumb guys, but there was this one guy, very smart, but built like a stick. I know, I know, beauty from within. But try saying that when you are staring face to face with the grim reaper. Oh wouldn't that be a fun date, a date with death, doesn't that sound fun?"

"Do you still do work at Cubix Laboratories?"

"Work there!? Work there? Darling I run Cubix Laboratories, and let me tell you, everything is running 200% better than that stiff who use to run things. He was such a card. Speaking of which, do you want to play cards? I am having a few of the girls over tomorrow for our weekly night of poker. Who said poker was just for guys? In fact I am better than most smoke stuffed beer belly porky guys who claim to be great card players. You should come, you'll have a blast, so I'll expect you tomorrow? Good, great, fabulous, I still live at the same place, only it is much, much more fabulous. You would know if visited more often. But well enough about me, how are you."

"That's actually why I am calling. You see something happened."

"Oh, are you and John finally getting married. Aren't I quite the match maker, I told you he was such a nice guy."

"I met him at a coffee shop, and you told me John was just another self-indulged pig of a man."

"Oh I know darling, but then I told you to stay with him and now...oh so lovely! When are planning to get kids? I'd say never, children will destroy your life, so only plan for one, two at tops, maybe three or four. Oh wouldn't five sound great, like a little Brady Bunch. Terrible show by the way. Remember when we use to watch old shows on Nick at Night, now they just show a few, it isn't as good anymore. We should watch them, it would be fabulous."

"No I am not getting married."

"Well fine your too fabulous anyway."

"No, I need to see you know, it's an emergency."

"Oh I told you that John guy was no good, you should listen to me more often."

"No it's something different that only you can handle, so please come over right away."

"Fabulous darling, fabulous, I'll be over there in a giff, I'll bring the girls."

"No, don't bring the girls, it's personal, please."

"But I insist, we'll talk it out, eat some ice cream, oh it will be simply marvelous."

"No, just you. No one else."

"Ok good, I'll be there in a sec, good-bye."

Whew! Tabitha sinks back against the wall. What a conversation! You see she knew to call Mary Anne because of her friends she knows she is the one who won't freak out towards the situation, if anything she'll think her growth spells as fascinating, but more importantly because Mary Anne happens to be possibly one of the more scientifically intelligent people on the face of the planet, even if she works for a company that specializes in fashion, which apparently she now runs.

Tabitha continually monitored the clock, the door, and the bedroom door in a random pattern. The noise from outside was quiet, it still being morning. Everything seemed calm, but everything certainly was not. She was especially worried that Mary Anne might bring friends, as she usually does in these situation; she thinks of them as great excuses for social gatherings. Finally a car pulled up, Tabitha could only hope she was alone, for she now towering at 15 feet.
