While it was true that Nala had pitched in in eating his steaks, that had only slowed his weight gain down, but he 'was' still getting fatter.
He just couldn't bring himself to run anymore, everytime he'd stand up he would almost immedialty 'thump' back down and stare off into space with a disheartened look. Like he had given up completly.
Nala kept encouraging him to at least try to get up, which he did before he thumped back down. It wasn't like she could do anything more than give encouraging words since tthe addition of 5 more steaks to her diet had sapped most of her mobility from her. She was upset about the pathetic state of her room mate but with her feet actually starting to lift off the ground from her massive stomach pushing her up she was powerless to help him.
